Diese Bestimmung wurde nun so durch- geführt, dass man zunächst in gleichen Abstän- den eine Serie von aeht Farbenmischungen mit folgenden Daten auf strich : für Gelb m1 : J/l = 2, 5%, für Rot m 2 : M2 = 0, 2%, für Blau m3 : M3 sukzessiv gleich 0, 125 O/o, 0, 130 /o... 0, 160%;
Device for determining the components of a mixture of colors.
The subject of the patent is a color card or some other device by means of which the components of a mixture of colors according to color and intensity can be determined; the aliseh color can then be reproduced by mixing its components. The invention is intended to be used wherever dyes and paints are produced or used, including in the paint trade and in the supply of painters.
It is known that by missing yellow, red and blue as pigments in all possible proportions, a threefold (as in the Ostwald color body) infinity of colors can be obtained. If one denotes resp. with m1, m2, m3 in the case of painting the alasses of the three mentioned pigments applied per cm2 of a white part coloring the area, with f1 the value of m1 for a certain (neither reddish nor greenlicles) yellow, with / the value of m @ for a (neither yellowish nor bluish) red and with J3 the value of Mtg for a (neither yellowish nor yellowish) blue, according to the present invention m1 can be replaced by z1f1, tK by z2f2, m3 by z3f3.
The three quantities fi will be understood as three color units, on the basis of which each of the infinitely many mixed colors can be mathematically denoted by three numbers zi. In the case of dyeing, mi i and fi are to be added as pigment quantities per cm3. The sum z1 + z @ + z3 is denoted by z.
Accordingly, the subject matter of the patent consists of a compilation of patterns of these colors, in which each is designated by its three numbers zi and has as a neighbor one or more patterns with adjacent numerical values; To determine a given mixed color, one only has to look for which pattern most resembles it.
The essence of the invention also includes a special condition for the choice of the ratios f2 / f1 and f3 / f1. The meaning of this condition can best be seen on the basis of Maxwell's color triangle, if one compares it with the known case where the colors are generated by absorption-free decomposition of a bundle of white light into three bundles of one mixed color each.
Now think of an equilateral triangle with the corner points E1, E2, E3; its height h has the length 1, any point P in the interior of it has the distances ai-from the sides; it represents z the mixed color with the components ziti.
In the case of the absorption-free decomposition of a bundle of white light, there is a layer W of P for which the mixed color is white. By suitable choice of the ratios f2 / f1 and f3 / f1 it can be achieved that W becomes the center (C) of the triangle; the three straight lines WEi then have the following characteristic property:
If P moves from Ei on the straight line EiW, the mixed color retains the hue of Ei, but becomes lighter and lighter and finally white.
In our case of pigment colors, the following can only be achieved by suitable selection of the ratios f2 f and f3 / f1:
If P moves in a straight line from Ei towards the center C of the triangle, the hue of P initially changes neither in the sense of Ei = 1 nor in the sense of Ei + 1; the mixed color is initially not lighter, but darker; the center C becomes dark, but does not have to be the darkest point D of the triangle.
The loss of white, however, is more than compensated by the fact that the variety of color tones is increased. To see it, compare the two cases with the Ostwald color body. The colors resulting from the absorption-free decomposition of a bundle of white light (possibly reunification with white) correspond only to points on the surface of the double-conical body, while pigments also make points in the interior possible; instead of a twofold infinity of colors there is a threefold.
Modern physics explains this seemingly strange behavior as follows:
The colors brown and gray, which are missing in the spectrum, are only perceived if white light from the surroundings of an orange or white colored body reaches the eye of the observer; if this is prevented by a suitable apparatus, the body appears orange or white; even black can appear white if there is no such side lighting (see the autographed lecture by Prof. Scherrer at the ETH, p. 86).
If one disregards this false vision, the influence of absorption on the mixing of pigments is reduced to the fact that the lines of the same color in Maxwell's triangle suffer deformations. The heights of the triangle can therefore become crooked lines that merge into one Cut the eccentric brightest point (FI). By adding the disturbance phenomenon, light is transformed into dark; the lightest point (H) becomes the darkest point (D).
An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be discussed, specifying an expedient production method of the same.
The base material chosen for the three primary colors was:
1. For yellow a piece S1 of the pigment mass M1 and the trade name Pontacyl-Lichtgelb 3G,
2. for red a piece of S2 of the pigment mass M2 and the trade name pontacyl-carmine 2G, 3. for blue a piece of S3 of the pigment mass M3 and the trade name Du Pont Anthraquinone Blue B.
Before the numerical values of the three variables fi of the exemplary embodiment were selected, an experimental determination of their mutual ratios f2 / f3, f3 / f1, f1 / f2 was necessary.
As already indicated, according to the present invention, these relationships should be such that: 1. the primary Uelb (zl = 1) is only darkened with the addition of smaller equal numbers (z2 = z3) of red units (f2) and blue units (f3), however, neither yellowish red nor yellowish blue,
2. the primary red (z2 = 1) with the addition of smaller equal numbers (z3 = z1) of blue units (f3) and yellow units (f1) only darkens, but neither becomes bluish nor yellowish, 3. the primary blue (z3 = 1) with the addition of smaller equal numbers (z1 = z2) of yellow units (fl) and red units (f2) it is only darkened, but neither becomes yellow nor reddish.
This determination was now carried out in such a way that a series of similar color mixtures with the following data is first drawn out at equal intervals: for yellow m1: J / l = 2.5%, for red m 2: M2 = 0, 2%, for blue m3: M3 successively equal to 0.125 O / o, 0.130 / o ... 0.160%;
Samples of the thus obtained lilac colors were arranged so that they can be easily compared with each other; in this way it was possible to determine the transition point at which reddish-yellow changes to greenish; at the transition point the ratio m2 is now equal to the ratio f2 / f3 sought for m3; The latter was found anew by carrying out a different series of experiments with staining with alternating amounts of red and fixed amounts of blue.
The intensity ratio f3 / f1 of blue and yellow in the stronger red and that f1 / f2 of yellow and red in the stronger blue were then determined analogously.
The color units f1, f2, f3 were chosen so that
1000 f1 = 1.175% M1,
1000 f2 = 0.950% M2,
1000 f3 = 0.675% M3.
The three numerical values. ll; now be chosen so that for each of the values 1000 fi there is a main color of medium intensity or a yellow for zl = 1000 with z2 = 0 = gg, a red for z2 = 1000 with z1, = 0 = z3 and a blue for Z3 = 1000 with Zl = 0 = Z2-
The factor 1000 was only chosen so that the smallest change in color intensities that the human eye can perceive corresponds to approximately one color unit; this allows the decimals to be omitted from all zi.
When the primary colors have been determined in the manner described, one proceeds to the division of the color wheel.
It is best to first take the intermediate shades for yellow, red and blan, that is, reddish orange, medium purple and medium green, so that the color wheel is divided into several parts. Between these colors you choose the intermediate colors, whereby the color wheel is divided into twelve f parts, and continue in the same way, with the division into 24, 48 and finally 96 parts. 96 parts are sufficient, since the human eye is not able to detect even smaller color differences.
It can be useful to number the colors of the color wheel as follows:
At first arbitrary: the primary yellow as No. 1, the primary red (carmine) as No. 33, the primary blue as No. 65, the reddish orange as No. 17, the medium violet as No. 49, the medium green as No. 81, then to distribute the remaining numbers in such a way that the colors corresponding to them appear equidistant after estimating normal visual perceptibility.
The inventor tried to express the final results of this estimate by six empirical formulas. Each of these formulas applies to one half of the interval between two primary colors and gives the value p of one of them as an approximately quadratic function of the number N. Since the formulas apply not only to integer values of N, but to any, there is, among other things, the advantage that the color component of the primary color is also precisely determined between two consecutive whole Ns.
With a total intensity of 1000 units, for example, the blue content b for numbers 33 to 49 can be calculated using the following formula: b (N-33) (N-17, 75).
For N = 33, 25 this formula gives the blue component 3, 875; this result, subtracted from 1000, gives the unit set 996, 125 for n red. From this it is also possible to calculate the number by solving an equation of the second order if the amount of blue and red contained is known.
Once the light colors (i.e. the colors of the color wheel) have been determined, one can now proceed to darkening as follows.
A color with z, = 23 g can be referred to as a plasticizer, and a color with added plasticizer as a plasticized color. In the present exemplary embodiment, the plasticizer is brown for z> 100.
In this context it must be pointed out that in practice the colors are usually darkened with black, and that Ostwald (for the lower half of his color body) also darkened colors by adding black; However, black does not appear in the subject matter of the present invention. In the exemplary embodiment described, for z1 + z2 + z3 = 2000 the darkest point in the vicinity of Si = 280 = Z2, approximately at 42 / o of the distance from the blue point E3 to the center C of the color triangle, is a darkened blue.
If you wanted to soften yellow with the latter, you would get a dark green; even orange sometimes has a greenish tone.
With the addition of some softening brown to any hue, whatever kind of color it is, it only darkens; but the keynote remains unchanged.
If small amounts of softening brown are added to the equally intense colors of the light color wheel, a dark color wheel is obtained in which the original color tones are retained. If larger and equal amounts of the plasticizer are added successively, the hues of the dark n color circle change; they approach each other until they finally unite in the softening brown which, as mentioned above, contains all the primary colors, yellow, red, and blue in equal quantities.
To make it easier to determine which colors have been softened, they can be divided into groups, each of which corresponds to a certain degree of darkening. Such groups are determined by adding, for example, 2%, 4%, 8%, 16% to 2n% softening brown to a 1000-unit color, where al is the atomic number of the group. For example, in the fourth plasticized group, 24% = 16% plasticizer, i.e. 1000 units of paint contain 160 units of plasticizer.
If the starting color is, for example, medium green, i.e. contains 500 units of yellow, 0 units of red and 500 units of blue, which can be expressed briefly by the formula 500 + 0 + 500 (= 1000), and the plasticizer 511/3 + Contains 531/3 + 531/3 (= 160), the resulting sum is 5531/3 + 531/3 + 5531/3 (= 1160). This sum can be multiplied by a factor of 1000 into 1000-unit intensity
1160 can be converted.
It is now possible to determine all possible colors and hues on the basis of the three-color basis described above. The determination can be made by the three numbers s; or by the three numbers z, V, n.
In addition to the determination of finished colors, according to the invention, the tinting power of dyes can be determined in relation to their yellow content. Red and blue are determined.
This so-called division into dye units can already take place in the factories. whereupon the three numbers found are given on the packings and listed in the offers, invoices, etc.
In contrast to Ostwald's color bodies, in the above explanation of the present invention, white and black were not regarded as colors in themselves; White was replaced by the color of the material to be colored (surface or body) and black was replaced by a softened blue of several thousand units. But one can also consider white and black as colors by specifying the white and black contents in addition to the yellow, red and blue contents.
Then the addition of white means that either the material to be colored increases or that the amount of color decreases, and this is expressed by the fact that the three numbers zi are reduced in the same ratio. The black content is already determined by the fact that the three numbers Zi of the plasticizer are indicated next to the three numbers z @ of the color to be softened.
When drawing up a color card according to the invention, it is irrelevant whether or not the primary colors are used in practice. In this respect alone, the subject of the invention differs from all known color cards.
In the color card according to the invention, the patterns can be put together in groups, each of which consists of patterns with the same color intensity 2 = Z1 + z2 + z3.
For example, a three-sided color card is suitable for teaching painting, one of which is for the group z = 1000 and one for the group z = 100, both with a top line for 12 light colors and one line below each for 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 32% plasticized; the third page with one line each for the z-values 10, 30, 75, 150, 300, 750, 1250, 2000, and with ten Patterns per line, of which six for light and four for softened colors. This exemplary embodiment has a total of 224 patterns.
It is not necessary to have full color collections for all intensity sizes. to give wppen, since a few are sufficient. The first two pages of the exemplary embodiment described are sufficient to determine the tone of any given color. The intensity t can then be easily estimated using the third page.
