Process for manufacturing magnesium by reduction at high temperature. It is known that magnesium can be obtained industrially by reduction at high temperature of its oxide - or of bodies containing it - by means of reducing agents giving volatile 110n oxidation products, such as silicon, aluminum. , silieo-aluminum.
In the event that the reducer is. silicon or aluminum, and where the product is. to be reduced is calcined dolomite, the end of the reaction consists of a lime silicate or lime aluminate slag, or a mixture thereof.
The nla-neesium escapes to the state. vapor and is collected on a suitable condenser.
Various methods have been proposed to promote such reduction. All the known processes in this field do. calls for reactions between solids, the raw material always being brought to the reaction temperature and reduced to the solid phase. The following drawbacks follow: 1. Necessity of intimately mixing the reaction materials to accelerate the reaction and make it sufficiently complete.
2. Impossibility of increasing the thickness of the reaction mass beyond a few decimeters, owing to the difficulty of making the calories penetrate fairly quickly into this poorly conductive mass and of allowing rapid evacuation of the magnesium vapors formed.
3. Obligation to evacuate residues which are in the state. solid.
Practically these difficulties have had the following consequences: a) they have. made essential a thorough mechanical preparation of the materials, in particular a complicated and expensive agglomeration of the reaction mixture; b) they have. made continuous operation of the reduction furnace industrially unrealistic, and the need to carry out the reduction under a very high vacuum in order to lower the operating temperature; (c) they have made it impossible to build production units weighing more than a few hundred kilograms per operation.
So we have. most often used fixed retorts of low capacity, while the use of rotary furnaces made it possible to build somewhat larger production units, at the cost of other drawbacks: poorer sealing, metal soiled with dust.
The object of the present invention is to remedy, at least partially, these drawbacks. It comprises a process for the manufacture of magnesium by high temperature reduction of bodies containing magnesium oxide by means of yielding reducing agents. non-volatile oxidation products, characterized in that this reduction is carried out in a furnace by pouring the bodies containing magnesium oxide and the reducing agent into slag, coming from the reduction, hand held at the liquid state.
It has in fact been observed that the magnesia dissolves very quickly in this slag maintained in the liquid state and that the reduction of the magnesia progresses very rapidly there, the magnesia content of the slag then being able to be reduced to a very low value. higher than that obtained in the techniques previously in use.
It is further noted that the. formation of magnesium vapor bubbles within the slag causes the bath to boil, which accelerates it. reaction and causes the rapid release of metal vapor.
The introduction of the bodies containing magnesium oxide and the reducing agent can be carried out simultaneously or successively into the slag maintained in the liquid state.
The heat to be supplied to the molten bath, to maintain it in the liquid state and compensate for the endothermicity of the reaction, can be obtained by the Joule effect, the molten bath or the residual slag being electrically conductive. at reaction temperatures.
An advantageous embodiment then consists in using a sealed oven comprising a reaction vessel constituted by a sheet metal container cooled externally and into which the electrodes penetrate.
For the first start-up of the furnace, the slag to be melted, for example a lime silico-aluminate which may come from a previous operation, is charged into the vessel, and the conventional electrothermal melting devices are used, for example the starting at the are between electrodes. It is also possible to use an electrically heated resistor, or else an aluminum-thermal cartridge, or any other means making it possible to obtain the fusion of the mass.
It is advantageous to charge a sufficient quantity of slag so that, after melting thereof, the electrodes are. submerged. Once the molten slag bath is formed, we hold it. its temperature by Joule effect, by adjusting either the spacing of the electrodes or. the voltage which is applied between them, and the elements of the reaction mixture are poured therein, preferably continuously.
The reduction begins as soon as these elements arrive in the slag and continues until the level of the liquid mass rises in the tank. When it reaches the upper part of the latter, the arrival of the mixture is interrupted while part of the slag is evacuated, keeping in the lower region of the tank the desired amount so that the electrodes remain submerged .
The method according to the present invention can be applied without resorting to the reduced pressures. However, a better productivity of the oven is obtained, as well as a lower consumption of electrical energy, by operating under reduced pressure. The use of pressures between? 0 and. 100 mm of mercury is recommended, as it allows the reduction to be carried out at a temperature below 1600, with good furnace productivity and efficiency. of condensation near the unit, while recovering the magnesium in the liquid state.
It is also possible to operate at lower temperatures and pressures and recover the metal in the solid state.

<tb> Magnesia <SEP> 14,01 / o The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, in fig. 1,? and 3, in a vertical sectional view, of the burrows making it possible to carry out the method according to the invention. In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the furnace is a single-phase furnace with mobile electrode E and conductive hearth S made of carbon.
The start-up is produced by passing the current between the hearth and the electrode by means of a few grains of good char, and preferably in the presence of residual slag from a previous operation. The reaction mass in pellets or powder is introduced through tube A; the latter quickly becomes conductive and. participates in the passage of the current. The slag formed is. also and it is therefore possible to operate under normal conditions by loading the furnace in such a way that the electrode is immersed in the bed of molten slag. The spent slag is discharged through the port 0, while the magnesium con dense in C.
The perimeter of the crucible is. provided with refrigeration R by circulating water, so as to cause the formation of a self-filling of solidified slag.
The oven is. leaktight thanks to a closure device P and is kept under slight pressure during supply or emptying operations by means of an inert gas supplement (H2 OR CH-).
In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. \ ?, we operate in a three-phase furnace operating on the same principles. The sole constitutes the neutral.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, a furnace, formed by an iron tank F1, is supplied with three-phase current by six horizontal graphite electrodes E1. The tank is surmounted by a conical shell V, lined internally with refractory V1, and closed by a plug V2, also fugé calori. The conical shell is connected to a cylindrical condensing chamber, with an axial condenser, C1, made of iron, cooled by water circulation.
The lower part of the condensation chamber is arranged so as to allow the evacuation of the magnesium in the liquid state. Magnesium first settles in the solid state, and., When the condensate has a sufficient thickness, the temperature of its surface reaches 650 and the magnesium liquefies and trickles down to the lower part of the condensation chamber. Variations in the flow of metal vapor do not affect the condensation efficiency, but only vary the thickness of the solid metal layer. A C2 gutter leads the metal into a C3 insulated pot. The electric power supply is made in low voltage, adjustable between 50 and 110 volts.
The power can be increased to 120 and even 150 k W , giving an output of 12 to 15 kilos of magnesium per hour. The first start. is made with an arc, between a movable electrode, passing through the tap hole 01, and the opposite electrode.
The pouring of the excess spent slag, which is not necessary for the following operation, is made through the side port 01, for example every 24 hours. In the case where one operates under reduced pressure, one must break the vacuum for this casting, and one takes the opportunity to evacuate the magnesium recovered in C3, and to replenish the silos or sealed hoppers A2 with a new charge of reaction materials. which feed the screws A1, serving to introduce these reaction materials into the furnace. It is also possible, if necessary, to clean the condenser C1 and remove the solid metal therein.
While the oven is in operation, the temperature is. controlled by an optical pyrometer at. through the V3 bezel. The cooling of the tank F1 is provided by a runoff ramp R1, supplied with water. A layer of slag D solidifies inside the wall of the tank F1 and provides thermal insulation.
Example 1: Is loaded into the hoppers (fig. 3), three in number, 2 tonnes of mixture 1 containing 0.3 tonnes of 75% Si ferrosilicon and 1.7 tonnes of calcined dolomite at 34% MgO, all previously ground so as to pass through a 50 mesh sieve.
The slag having been poured up to the level of orifice 01, the orifices of the furnace are closed and a vacuum is made, while the feed screws are started; the speed of these is adjusted so that the hoppers are emptied in 22 hours, and the power of the furnace is adjusted to maintain the temperature of the bath between 1500 and 1550 C, while the vacuum, measured at the outlet of the condensation chamber, is maintained in the vicinity of 25 mm of sea cure. Significant boiling of the liquid slag bath is observed, due to the rapid release of metallic vapors.
Once the operation is complete, the vacuum is broken and the excess slag is poured off by removing the plug which closes the orifice 01. In this way, approximately 1.7 tonnes of a molten slag grading 4.5% MgO.
On the other hand, the pot C3 is opened and an ingot of 270 kg of metal is taken out. The condenser Ci is also taken out, on which approximately 30 kg of solid metal remain. The condenser is replaced after recovery of the metal. The oven orifices are closed and a new operation is carried out.
Example The procedure is the same as in Example 1, but using mixture II. This mixture being richer in magnesia, for 22 hours of continuous operation, 1.7 tonnes, or 299.2 kg of 75 0/0 -Si ferro-silicon, 1246.1 kg of dolomite are sufficient. calcined at 34% MgO and 154.7 kg of magnesia.
Example 3: With mixture III, all that is required is 1570 kg, i.e. 172.7 kg of ferro-silicon at 75 010 Si, 12.5.6 kg of silico-aluminum at 33/45 0 / 0, 1051.9 kg of calcined dolomite and 219.8 kg of magnesia. The mixture, previously ground so as to pass through a 50 mesh sieve, is distributed between the three hoppers, and the operation continues as in Example 1. The slag discharged at the end of the operation is a mixture of lime silicate and ahuninate.
