Fixing rod for a piercing member and method of manufacturing this rod. The present invention comprises a fixing rod for a piercing member, characterized in that it comprises a hollow steel rod, one end of which has a conical axial housing, a coupling member having.
a conical upper end part disposed in said conical axial housing, the wall of which is forged around this end part of the connector, this coupling member having a threaded lower end part intended to receive a boring member and, a , collar located between its two said lower and upper parts and bearing on the face of the housing end of the hollow rod.
This invention also comprises a method of manufacturing this rod, characterized in that said end of the hollow rod is heated and said conical axial housing is formed, in that said conical upper end part of the locking member is introduced. fitting in said housing, conical axially of the hollow rod, in that said end of the hollow rod is heated to a forging temperature, and in that this end is forged all around said conical upper end part of the 'connecting member.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the fixing rod which the invention comprises as well as two variants of this form. Fig. 1 shows, in axial section, this embodiment.
Figs. 2 and 3 respectively show, in axial section, an alternative embodiment of this form.
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
The fixing rod shown in fig. 1 comprises a - hollow steel rod A and a fully machined connecting member B permanently fixed in a conical axial housing 2 which the axial bore 1 of this hollow rod has at one of its ends.
The connector B comprises a conical upper end part 3, which is permanently fixed in the housing 2 of the hollow rod A, a threaded cylindrical lower end part 4 intended to engage in the threaded axial housing 6 d 'a piercing member C, and an intermediate circumferential flange or collar 5 which rests against the face of said end of said rod and forms a seat for the adjacent end of the piercing member C.
The connection member B has an axial bore 7 which passes through it and which cooperates with the axial bore 1 of the rod A and the axial bore 6 of the piercing member C to form a passage orifice for conducting a fluid. purifier with cutters 8 at the outer or working end of the piercing member. The conical upper end part 3 of the connector B is, spirally threaded, as shown at 9, preferably from one end to the other and is fixed in the conical housing 2 of the rod A against a rotary or axial movement by compared to it by forging the end at. housing of the rod A all around said threaded upper end of said connecting member.
In the. variant embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the end 3a of the connecting member Bi engaged in the conical housing 2a of the hollow rod Al is provided with a multiplicity of projections or tabs 9a which are entirely and longitudinally spaced eirconferentially and are pushed in by forging in the wall of the conical housing of the hollow rod in order to prevent a relative rotary and axial movement between the connecting member and the. hollow rod.
In the variant embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and -I, the end 3b of the connecting member B2 engaged in the conical housing 2b of the hollow rod A2 has a polygonal cross section with button-shaped projections 9b on planar side faces in order to prevent relative rotary and axial movement of the connecting member with respect to the hollow rod.
To obtain the shape and the variants of execution described above, a hollow rod of a desired length is taken, one end of this rod is then heated and the axial bore is flared to form the conical axial housing therein. The housing end of the hollow rod is then reheated to a forging temperature and the conical end of the connector member is introduced into the housing.
It should be noted that it is also possible first to introduce the conical end of the connecting member into the conical housing of the hollow rod and then to heat the housing end of this rod again, after which the The housing end of the rod is forged using suitable clamping dies all around said tapered end of said connecting member and interferes with threads, other protrusions or flat faces provided on the latter end. The hollow rod and the connecting member are thus permanently linked. The connector member is inserted so that the collar bears against the housing end of the rod. The connecting member is.
constructed of an alloy steel which will remain hard enough to prevent deformation of the thread on the lower end of the coupling member and its collar which receives the piercing member during the hot forging operation of the end with housing of the hollow rod around its upper end.
The fastening rods shown can be obtained quickly and easily in the field from a hollow rod and a finished coupling member. The collar of the connecting member serves as a seat for the upper end of the piercing member and as a means of transmitting the thrust between the hollow rod and the piercing member.
In some cases, the residual heat that remains after the formation of the housing. tapered will suffice to allow the end to. housing of the hollow rod to be forged all around the connecting member introduced without heating it again.
