Driving device for perforated photographic film. This invention. relates to a drive device for a perforated photographic line. This training device. is of the known type, comprising a rotary member comprising a flange on which teeth are arranged to engage with the perforations of the film.
It is well known that supports of all kinds used in the manufacture of films are subject to shrinkage under the influence of temperature, changes in humidity and loss of solvents. Although this shrinkage can be reduced or limited, it can, even in modern films, reach 1.51 / o. It goes without saying that different films pull out in different ways.
Nitro-eellulose films, for example, generally do not shrink by more than 0.5%, while security films made of mixed esters of cellulose and lightly hydrolyzed cellulose acetate may shrink (the 0, 5 to 7,
5%. These values are approximate and correspond to films normally used. Very old films, stored in poor conditions, can undergo further shrinkage.
The diversity of these withdrawals makes it difficult to train the line regularly and to properly frame it using the perforations. Fixed-pitch toothed gears or drums are not suitable for films of a given size and for which the shrinkage has a given value as well; for films (the different shrinkage, the dragging is irregular. On the other hand, the regular dragging of the film is essential in continuous drawing machines, apparatus for recording and reproducing sound and for many other devices.Generally a photosensitive film that does.
not been exposed, processed and dried is not subject to shrinkages as severe as those which subsequently occur when this film has. been exposed and processed. As a result, the serious difficulties due to the withdrawal. usually occur and are most severe when copying processed film. Shrinkage is generally not taken into consideration for the construction of cameras.
To obviate these drawbacks, in the positive training object. of the invention, the teeth are capable of being individually displaced relative to the flange, and this positive device comprises means arranged to vary the interval between any two consecutive teeth when said rotary member is driven in rotation.
Although the device which is the subject of the invention is intended above all for devices such as continuous pulling machines or for other devices using treated films and therefore liable to have undergone appreciable shrinkage, it is also possible to to use advantageously in (apparatuses using any film, having undergone only a very slight or insignificant shrinkage. The drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the device which is the subject of the invention and explanatory diagrams.

The fi-. 2 is an end view of the second embodiment.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the device shown in. fig. 2.
The, fig. 4 is a diagram showing the irregularity of the position and the speed of the film as a function of the number of teeth: engaged.
Fig. 5 is a diagram indicating the necessary clearance of the teeth in the perforations as a function of the number of teeth engaged.
Fig. 6 is a diagram representing the variations of the framing, as a function of the number of teeth engaged in the film.
Fig. 7 is a diagram showing the maximum displacement of the teeth as a function of the number of teeth engaged.
Fig. 8 schematically shows a pinion similar to that of FIG. 2, the reference signs serving to illustrate the calculation of such a pinion and of a cam with which it cooperates.
As we have seen, the teeth of the pinion are mounted independently thereon, so as to be able to be moved by a determined arc. In the embodiments shown, this movement is controlled by a cam. In the. embodiment shown in fig. 2 and 3, a shaft 1 supports a hub 2 comprising a flange 3 provided with an annular surface 4 provided to support a film provided with marginal perforations at 6. The marginal perforations on one side of the film are alone - used and cooperate with the teeth.-, 7 of the pinion.
Teeth 7 can be provided on both sides of the pin, but such an arrangement would make the precise mounting of these teeth very difficult and pinions having two rows of teeth are generally not necessary. As seen in Figs. 2 and. 3, the teeth 7 are each mounted to pivot at 8 and. are fixed to the flange 9, itself fixed to the hub 2 by means of screws 10. The shaft 1 is driven by a mechanism, not shown, at the desired constant speed.
Each of the teeth 7 is provided with an elongated or verture 11, the median line of which is an arc of a circle, the center of which is on the chi pivot axis. 8 of this tooth. The movement of each tooth around its pivot 8 is limited by a screw. scope 12, traversing the opening 11 and screwed into the flange J. Each tooth 7 also comprises a lever 13 which ends at its end opposite the tooth proper, by a pusher 14, intended for. rest on the surface of a cam 15 which may be a circular or parabolic eccentric.
Each of the levers 13 comprises a groove 16 which crosses it diagonally, so that all these grooves are placed approximately in the extension of one another, and form a passage in which is. disposed a spring tire 17, which surrounds the hub 2. This spring tire is. engages each of the levers 13 and maintains all of the push rods 14 in contact with the surface of the cam 15. As the pinion rotates, the teeth are. constantly moved forward and backward with respect to the flange 9, as indicated by the arrow at fi-. 2.
This back and forth movement or displacement. of teeth is extremely low, as we will see. further.
In the embodiment shown in i fig. 1, a metal plate 18 carries all the teeth 19 of the pinion. These teeth are made flexible by a series of slots 20, formed in the plate and almost completely separating each of these teeth: each of the teeth is attached to the rest of the plate only by a narrow elastic metal strip 21, limited by holes 22 and 23.
The surfaces 24 are. designed to be welded or brazed to a member of the pinion, for example to the flange 9 of FIG. 3. Lees levers 25 of each tooth are. elastically movable around the narrow bands 21 and move in accordance with the profile of the cam 27. on which their ends 26 slide. One of the advantages of the. construction shown in fig. 1 is due to the fact that all the teeth can be milled in a single plate or disc 18, the holes 22 and 23 being able to be drilled and the slots 20 being able to be made in this plate which can then be fixed to the flange intended to support it. .
The interval between the teeth can thus be maintained and preserved very exactly during the manufacture of the pinion. The displacement of each tooth is so small that the flexibility of the narrow band 21 is ample enough to allow the tooth to move to the desired arc.
In the two embodiments shown, certain components such as cams 15 and 27 have strongly exaggerated shapes: the movement of the teeth is so small that the excen tricity of the cam would in reality hardly be perceptible in the drawing. . The low amplitude of this movement makes it possible to construct pinions similar to the one shown in fig. 1 and giving full satisfaction. The pinions shown have a much smaller number of teeth than that used in reality, in order to simplify the drawing.
It will be noted that, in FIG. 2, each tooth can. turn around its pivot 8 when the cam 15 actuates the pusher 14 which the lever 13 of this tooth comprises and when, the cam 15 being retained by a lever 29 fixed by a bolt 30 to a support 31, the surface 15 of this cam remains stationary while the pinion is driven by shaft 1. Thus, the teeth move forward and backward with respect to the pinion with uniform movement. Each of the teeth is actuated in one direction as well as in the other, the pushers 14 being constantly kept in contact with the cam by the spring band 17.
The movement of the teeth is controlled in such a way that the intervals between these teeth decrease. gradually in the driving direction of the film, throughout the region of the pinion which is engaged with this film. As a result, this pinion can be adapted immediately and without adjustment to all the usual cuts. In other words, the step of the per-; Drilling of a film which has undergone normal shrinkage always corresponds to the pitch of the teeth of a segment of the contact arc or of the covering of this pinion by the film.
Obviously the teeth of the pinion; fractions of the contact area whose pitch does not correspond to the pitch of the perforations in the film, for a given shrinkage, move away from the edges of the perforations as far as the thickness of each tooth is. weak enough so that his back does not touch the edge of the perforation. Thus, at the ends of this contact arc, the teeth are still free and are easily released from the perforation.
The driving of the film using such a pinion is not perfectly uniform. All the teeth move with different speeds, so that since there is a speed discontinuity the moment the film stops being driven by one tooth and begins to be driven by the next, the best result. that can be obtained is to make this speed discontinuity constant and independent of the various withdrawals of the film. It can be maintained at a very low value, satisfactory for sound reproduction, even for a maximum variation of the shrinkage, if this is distributed over a reasonable number of teeth, ie for example five teeth simultaneously engaged in the film.
For this discontinuity to be exactly the same for all normal values of the shrinkage, the displacement of the teeth should follow a parabolic law, but the region of a circular eccentric cam farthest from its axis of rotation can be a very good one. approximation and be assimilated to a parabola, and it has been found that the difference between such a circular cam and a parabolic law cam is so small that it is preferable, in practice, to use a circular cam which is easier to machine.
In order to obtain the best possible results, it is preferable to study the device for the particular application for which it is intended. When constructing a new pinion there are certain restrictions which arise from the nature of the particular problem to be solved. In general, the diameter of the pinion, the number of teeth and the maximum variation of the shrinkage of the film in front. to be trained will be given, as well as the maximum allowable unreality of movement.
We must also take into account the extreme values of the contact arc, generally. imposed by the other parts of the device in which the device must be incorporated. From these data, we will seek to obtain the number of teeth engaged simultaneously in the perforations, the diameter of the pinion, taken at the bottom of the teeth, the width of the teeth and the eccentricity of the cam. All these values can easily be obtained with the aid of the graphs of Figs. 4 to. 7 and the diagram of FIG. 8.
Fig. 4 shows how the irregularity of the movement of the film, represented on the ordinate in / a of the interval between teeth, depends on the number of teeth engaged, indicated on the abscissa, and on the withdrawal which we wish to take into account, each curve corresponding to. a specified withdrawal. If it is desired to obtain the greatest possible regularity of movement, several teeth must always be simultaneously engaged in the perforations of the film.
The. Fie. 5 illustrates how. the clearance of a tooth in the perforations, represented on the ordinate and in intervals between teeth, depends on the number of teeth engaged (abscissa) and on the planned withdrawal (parameter). The fact that the backs of the teeth must not abut against the edge of the perforations limits the number of teeth which can be simultaneously engaged, for a tooth clearance in the perforation and for a given tooth displacement.
Fig. 6 shows the displacement. chi frame of the image, represented by ordinates and. in intervals between teeth, resulting. of a determined variation in the shrinkage of the film (parameter) and as a function of the number of teeth engaged (abscissa). This displacement also constitutes a limitation as to the number of teeth which can be engaged simultaneously.
Thanks to the graph of fig. 5, it is possible to calculate the maximum displacement of a tooth, inside the arc of contact of the pinion with the film, as a function of the number of teeth engaged and of the withdrawals which one wishes to keep eonipte. Using this figure and the schematic representation of FIG. 8, the necessary cam eccentricity can be calculated. The diameter of the part of the pinion that guides the film. is also indicated in this fig. 8.
An example will make it easier to understand how these diagrams can be used for the calculation of a pinion. Or to construct a pinion for a 35 mm film capable of undergoing shrinkage s of up to 1.5%. Let us admit, moreover, that one perforation in two is engaged by a tooth. of this pinion, that it has 50 teeth (N = 50) and a circumference of about 483 mm.
It is desired to reproduce with a fineness of structure equivalent to 90 lines per mm, which limits the irregularity (the admissible movement due to the pinion at about i / isoo of the pitch of (slow or 0.05511 / o. from Fig. 4, it is immediately deduced that at least 3 teeth must be engaged simultaneously.
Optical conditions and <the space requirement. that at least 6 teeth are simultaneously involved in the film (n = 6). With a normal perforation length of <B> 1.98 </B> 111111 and in.
assuming that the interval between teeth or the pitch p of the tooth is 51.5 mm, it can be seen, with reference to fig. 5, that 1 the thickness (the the 'tooth must be smaller than 1.98 inni - (0.045 X 9.5 mm) = 1, .55 mm.
Since the copy must be made in the middle of the contact arc, fig. 6 allows (deduce that the line of separation of the images has a niaxiinum displacement, for films of different shrinkage, (the - 0.009 X 9.5 = - 0.09 inin approximately.
Fig. 7 then indicates that the maximum stroke of a tooth, represented on the y-axis and in steps, is approximately 0.0135 X 9.5 = 0.13 mm. In fig. 8, a is given an arbitrarily chosen value of 12.7 mm and b a value of approximately 22 mm. b must be large in relation to a in order to reduce the effects of wear. For these values, the eccentricity of the train is
EMI0005.0007
The guiding surface of the film has a diameter of:
EMI0005.0008
The graph of fig. 4 is established by assuming that, in the region of contact of the pinion with the film, the difference in speed of two successive teeth is a constant. This result can only be achieved if the displacement of a tooth is carried out according to a determined law. In what follows, we will define this law and give the profile of the cam which corresponds to it. We will also calculate the irregularity of displacement of the film to which we owe. to be expected under specific conditions.
Be. t the time elapsed from a moment not yet determined, r the radius of the pinion (at the base of the teeth), O the angle, counted from a point of origin not yet determined, up to a point of the circumference designated by the index <I> k, </I> the unit of increase in <I> k </I> corresponding to a modification of a tooth pitch (the According to the key theorem Tay lor
EMI0005.0016
and therefore:
EMI0005.0018
Thus, f "(:
1 ,, + at) is a constant independent of t, since this term is the derivative modifications in unit k therefore do not correspond to constant angle modifications); or again: Yh the distance to point k of the same tooth measured along the circumference. We therefore have Yh = r 0.
The length of the contact arc, the regular movement of the pinion has the effect. a displacement of any point of the circumference which can be expressed by the relation Y'h - A, <I> + a t, </I> in which <I> a </I> is a constant common for all points of the circumference and. Ah a particular constant at a point of this circumference.
Whatever the profile of the cam, the tooth displacement. will be determined solely by Y'h. Let f (Y'h) be this displacement, we have. then: (1) Yha = Ah + at + f (Ah + at) So
EMI0005.0035
The difference in speed of two successive teeth is then given by:
EMI0005.0036
This .difference must be a constant, for example 2ab, therefore:
EMI0005.0040
which can be written:
f '(Ah <I> + </I> at) - f' (Ah_1 <I> + </I> at) = 2b f '(Ah <I> + </I> at) - f (Ah < I> + </I> a, t <I>+</I> <B> Ah-, - </B> Ah) = 2b with respect to t highest order. Higher order derivatives will therefore be zero. Integration gives: -
EMI0006.0003
A second integration gives
EMI0006.0005
B and C are integration constants and can be functions of h.
These constants depend on the position of the cam with respect to the voltage 0 = 0.
The time that takes. each tooth of the pinion to move to the position previously occupied by the. tooth, neighbor is a constant independent of tc. Let c be this time. It comes: Yh, t = Yh- 1, t + c (4) Y'h, t - Y'h. 1, t + e., /.

If we denote by X ',; the distance between the face of the first tooth and the kme perforation of a film not exhibiting shrinkage, and by X "I; the same magnitude corresponding to a film having undergone maximum shrinkage, and if one takes into account in that the films without shrinkage are driven by the first tooth, while the films having undergone said maximum shrinkage are driven by the last tooth of the contact arc, we have <B> X </B> II;

This value divided by p is shown in fig 5.
A film that has undergone medium shrinkage is entrained by the tooth,

Fig. 8 indicates the way of interpreting the data provided by FIG. 7 to calculate the eccentricity. Inside the middle arc of the contact arc. This greatness is. equal to:
EMI0009.0015
appropriate <SEP> of the <SEP> pinion, <SEP> between <SEP> the <SEP> teeth, <SEP> is
<tb> equal <SEP> to <SEP>, In this formula, N is the total number of teeth and t is the thickness of the film. This pinion diameter is exactly suitable for a front film that has undergone medium shrinkage.
However,
EMI0009.0017
is obviously equal to an integer number of intervals between teeth of the pinion. This means that, along the contact arc, each tooth moves forward and then returns to the position it originally occupied with respect to the flange.
The amplitude of this movement reaches its maximum in the middle of this contact arc, it is equal to:
EMI0009.0019
the tooth must move in the direction of rotation of the pinion by the quantity p-y. To this end, the cam must therefore present a difference in radius from the axis of rotation of the pinion of b py, and this a magnitude is maximum in the middle of the contact arc. of the pinion with the film.
To meet these conditions, the eccentricity E must therefore be equal to
EMI0010.0001
as shown in fig. 8, and the straight line joining the center of the eccentric to the center of rotation of the pinion must pass through the point of contact of the cam with the pusher of the. tooth which is in the center of the contact arc.
Using this method, it is easy to construct legs and cams capable of meeting any special requirements which may arise.
The rope can be of dimensions. normal or abnormal and be provided with any type of perforation. CTénéra: le- nient, the film as well as its. perforation will be of a normal type, such as, for example, the 35 nm film or the 16 nm film which are most used.
He goes. of course that a film has <B> a </B> y having undergone a shrinkage of more than 2.51 / 0 is more difficult to train properly and that the realization of the device having to lead such a film is also much more difficult.
It is possible that films with very large indents cannot be trained properly; however, this is of no practical importance since with modern cinema films the shrinkage is generally less than 2.51 / o and often even less than 0.5%.
This shrinkage varies from film to film and is generally greatest for very dry old films. The training device should always be constructed taking into account the ma.xirn.um shrinkage that may present the films that the envisioned device is. intended to use. It is. Obviously, a pinion constructed for films which have only undergone shrinkage here by 0.5% at most should not be used to drive ropes which have undergone higher shrinkages.
It is on the other hand desirable to limit the displacement of teeth to the value necessary for the maximum expected withdrawals.
