Voltage Regulator. The subject of the invention is a voltage regulator intended to adjust the voltage supplied by an alternating-current generator having an excitation circuit. This regulator is characterized in that it comprises a resonant circuit subjected to the voltage to be regulated and comprising an inductive reactance and a capacitive reactance, a control circuit subjected to the voltage at the terminals of one of these reactors, and means regulating action born by the control circuit and intended to regulate the current flowing in the excitation circuit of said generator.
The accompanying drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, one embodiment and two variants of the subject of the invention.
The fi-. 1 is a circuit diagram of an embodiment of the object of the invention applied to the regulation of the voltage of an alternating current generator.
The fi-. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 of a variant.
lia fig. 3 is a view similar to the thread. 1 of another variant.
The operation of ordinary voltage regulators gives rise to difficulties due to the wear and tear of moving parts and to the adjustments and replacements which are necessary to keep these regulators in good working order. The invention enables these difficulties to be remedied by means of a voltage regulator which does not include any moving parts.
The regulator described below is applied to regulating the voltage of an alternating current generator 11 (fig. 1) which has an armature 12 and a field winding or inductor 13. The armature winding dies on an alternating current network designated by AC and comprising the conductors 14, 15 and 16. The inductor 13 of the generator 11 is excited by a direct current coming from an exciter 17 which comprises an armature 18 and an inductor 19 connected to an excitation circuit 20. The excitation winding 13 of the generator 11 is connected directly to the brushes 21 of the armature 18 of the exciter 17 by the conductors 22 and 23.
An adjustable rheostat 24 is connected to the conductor 23 by a conductor 25 and to the circuit containing the excitation winding 19 of the exciter as described below in detail.
The regulator shown comprises a circuit 26 subjected to the voltage of the AC network to be adjusted and which will be referred to as the resonant circuit and operates in a state close to resonance at the frequency and at the. normal voltage. This circuit energizes a control circuit 27 connected to a rectifier 28. The rectifier 28 energizes an adjustment circuit 29 which regulates the voltage across the terminals of the excitation winding 13 of the generator 11. These various circuits are described. below in detail. A transformer 31 comprising a primary bearing 32 and a winding. condaire 33 supplies circuit 26 which is thus subjected to a voltage proportional to the voltage to be adjusted.
The primary winding 32 is connected by the conductors 34 and 35 to any two of the conductors of the line AC ". In the embodiment shown, the conductors 34 and 35 are connected to the conductors 15 and 16 of this line. The resonant circuit 26 contains an inductive reactance 36 and a capacitive reactance 37. The reactance 36 consists of a core 38 comprising two vertical branches 39 and 41 and two horizontal core parts 42 and 43 joining the vertical branches 39 and. 41. The core 38 further comprises two core parts 44 and 45 projecting from each end of the branch 41.
A magnetic shunt 46 cooperating with the core parts 44 and 45 makes it possible to vary the inductance of the reactance 36 by varying the reluctance of the magnetic circuit of the core 38, so as to vary the flux passing through the branch 41 of the nucleus. The magnetic lead 46 is mounted on a screw 47 which screws into a support 48 fixed on the core part 45. By turning a knob 49 fixed on this screw, the lead 46 can be moved closer or further away from the parts 44 and 45 of the core. , so as to vary the reluctance of the magnetic circuit.
A winding. 51 taken is mounted on the branch 41 of the core 38 and. one end of this winding is connected by a conductor 52 to one of the reinforcements of the. capacitive reactance 37, the other armature of which is connected by a conductor 53 to one end of the secondary winding 33 of the transformer 31. The other end of the secondary winding of this transformer is connected by a conductor 54 to a contact arm 55 which cooperates with the sockets of the rolling 51. These two conductors and the two reactances constitute. the resonant circuit 26 subjected to the action of a voltage proportional to the voltage to be adjusted.
The two reactances 36 and 37 are connected in series in the circuit 26, so that at the desired frequencies, these reactances are substantially equal and form a resonant circuit. We set this characteristic to. advantage in the adjustment of the voltage of the generator, as described below in detail.
The -circuit control 27 consists of two conductors 56 and. 5 7 who are. connected to conductors 53 and 52 and to the primary winding 58 of a transformer 59. This circuit, as can be seen, is connected to each of the plates of the capacitive reactance 37 and excited by the voltage to the limits of this reactance. A rheostat. 61 is used to adjust the. value of the voltage across this reactance and. it is connected by two conductors 62 and 63 to conductors 56 and 57.
The control circuit 27 energizes the rectifier 28 which consists of. four half-wave rectifier elements 64, 65, 66 and 67, which are connected as a bridge by means of conductors 68, 69, 71 and 7 ?. The secondary winding 73 of the transformer 59 is connected to two conductors 74 and 75 qni, for their part, are. connected to conductors 72 and 69 of rectifier 28.
The adjustment circuit 29 comprises two conductors 76 and 77 which are connected respectively. to conductors 68 and. 71 re trainer \. 38. Conductor 76 is connected directly. to the excitation winding 1.9 of the exciter 17, while the conductor 77 is connected to the arm <the contact 73 of a rheostat 79.
This rheostat is connected by one end to the condueteur 76 and by 5o11 other end to. a conductor 81 which, for its part, is connected to the conductor 7 7 and to one end of the rheostat? 4. The mobile contact arm 82 of the rheostat 24 is. connected by a conductor 83 to the aforementioned conductor \?
The excitation circuit \ 30 of the exciter 7.7 com carries a conductor 84 which is connected to the winding, excitation 19 and to an electric valve 85 which, in turn, is connected by a conductor 86 to the conductor 2. ?. The rheostat 24 is. the ordinary ellanrp key rheostat which is used for. adjust the excitation of the exciter 1.7, while the rheostat 79 is an additional rheostat which belongs to the regulator and which is connected in series with the rheostat 24 and the excitation winding 19.
The operation of the device described. is the following: the circuit 26 is excited by the AC line, therefore by a voltage proportional to the voltage to be adjusted. This voltage is applied to circuit 26 by transformer 31.
If we express the voltage between the conductors 52 and. 53 as a function of the intensity of the current in the circuit 26, due to the reactance 36, a curve having the general shape of the magnetization curves will be obtained, that is to say that for low intensities of .current, each increase in intensity is accompanied by a considerable increase in voltage, whereas for intensities exceeding a certain value, even a considerable variation in the intensity of the current corresponds only to a low voltage variation.
This last property, depending on which the intensity of the current is very sensitive to voltage variations. applied, is. favorable to resonance phenomena.
he critical value of the intensity from which this condition is fulfilled is that for which the variation of the voltage / intensity quotient, for a determined variation of the intensity (for example the reduction of this quotient for an increase of an imitated intensity) is. the. stronger, otherwise, said. the. value for which the first derivative of this quotient with respect to the intensity has its maximum in absolute value.
To ensure the functioning of the device, the inductance (the reactance 36) is adjusted so that when the network voltage reaches or exceeds the minimum voltage provided for this network and in particular when the network voltage is at its value. normal, this voltage produces through the winding 57. provided with taps a. current the intensity of which is already greater than the intensity for which the variation of the voltage / current quotient in function <B> (the </B> l the intensity is the strongest.
We will thus obtain clans circuit 26, for the frequency and. the operating voltage, a sensibly resonant state. An increase or decrease in this voltage above or below the normal voltage causes a corresponding amplified increase or decrease in the voltage in the capacitive reactance 37 due to the. relation existing between reactors 36 and 37. This amplified voltage is applied to rectifier 28 which, in turn, passes a direct current through circuit 29. This direct current passes through rheostat 79, which applies a voltage to circuit d excitement 20.
The elements of the rectifier are arranged so as to straighten the full wave and so that the voltage applied to the rheostat 79 opposes the voltage of the excitation circuit 20 produced by the lead 18 of the exciter 17. It can therefore be seen that when the voltage of the generator 11 increases, the direct current passing through the circuit 29 also increases and much more quickly. The voltage created at the terminals of the rheostat 79 by this current opposes the voltage applied to the excitation winding 19 of the exciter; the magnetic field and the voltage at the terminals of the exciter decrease and, consequently, the corresponding voltage in the excitation winding 13 of the generator 11.
To establish a situation in which the increase in the voltage across the rheostat 79 compensates for the increase in the voltage across the generator, a rough adjustment of the value of the. reactance 36 by moving the contact arm 55 over the various taps of the winding 51. A more precise adjustment of this reactance can be effected by moving the magnetic lead 46 relative to the core parts 44 and 45 of kernel 38.
In addition, the voltage applied to the control circuit 27 can be adjusted by means of the rheostat 61 and, finally, the. voltage applied to the rheostat 79 is adjustable by the displacement of the contact arm 78 of this rheostat.
The electric valve 85 consists of an ordinary rectifier element, of sufficient capacity, which is connected to the excitation circuit, so as to pass the current of the excitation winding 1.9 of the exciter in the direction suitable. In the event that rapid and accentuated variations in the voltage of the generator cause a corresponding considerable variation in the voltage of the regulating circuit 29, the valve 85 prevents the reversal of the direction of the current flowing through the winding. excitation 19 of the exciter and the reversal of the polarity of the exciter which would result therefrom.
Fig. 2 shows a variant of the regulator. Since some of the elements of this embodiment of the invention are the same as those of FIG. 1, the description of these elements is unnecessary and the corresponding elements are designated by the same numbers of digit 1.
The embodiment of FIG. 2 comprises a stabilization transformer 87, the primary winding of which is designated by 88 and the secondary winding by 89. The primary winding 88 of this transformer is connected by conductors 91 and 92 to the conductors 122, respectively <B> 123 </B> of the excitation circuit of the excitation winding <B> 113 </B> of the generator <B> 111. </B> The current winding 89 of this transformer is connected to circuit 129 by conductor 177 and a conductor 93. This secondary winding is thus connected in series with the rectifier <B> 128 </B> and the rheostat 179.
The transformer 87 a. The aim is to significantly reduce the pendular movement of the tension and to bring the tension generated by the exciter 117 back to its normal value as quickly as possible after any variation in the tension of line 4C. The primary winding 88 of the transformer 87, connected to the direct current circuit of the excitation winding 113 of the. generator 11.2, normally does not transmit any energy to the secondary rolling 89. However, if a wave or pulse of: current occurs in the excitation winding, this results in a variation of the current in the primary 88 and a magnetic flux in the core of transformer 87 which creates a current in the secondary rolling 89.
This current opposes the current produced by rectifier 128 and thus slows down the variation of the generator excitation current and hence reduces the possibility of movement. pendulum or oscillatory adjustment.
Instead of using a rheostat connected in series with the exciter field winding and applying the rectifier setting voltage to this rheostat, a separate auxiliary field winding can be provided for the exciter. excitatory and apply it. voltage to this in auxiliary excitation bearing. The fi-. 3 shows a variant produced in these conditions. Since most of the elements in fig. 3 are. identical to those of FIG. 1, it is unnecessary to describe them again and they are designated by the same numbers, preceded by the number 2.
In the. embodiment of FIG. 3, the rheostat 79 is deleted and replaced by an auxiliary 9: 1 excitation winding. This winding is mounted on the cores of the exciter inductor next to the windings 219, but is connected so that the current flows through its turns in the opposite direction to the direction of current flow in the winding. . <B> 219. </B> The winding. 94 is connected to conductors 276 and 277, so that the voltage produced by rectifier 228 is applied directly to this. winding.
Winding. 94. Is, dimensioned so that the flux which it generates can rarely, if ever, be greater than the flux generated by the main excitation winding 219. It becomes. impossible in these conditions to reverse the. .polarity of the field of the exciter in the case of a considerable variation in the voltage of the generator 211.
The advantages of the various embodiments of the described regulator are obvious. Due to the absence of moving parts, it operates indefinitely without monitoring. When the regulator is set once and for all, no further setting is necessary as long as operation is desired to remain the same. Since no inertia of moving parts is involved in the operation of the regulator, the adjusting action is extremely rapid.
The voltage variations of the generator can be sufficiently amplified so that the resulting direct voltage can be used directly in the excitation circuit of the exciter without the need to use relays or amplifiers. electronic. The regulator can be easily and quickly adjusted in a simple and convenient manner to achieve the desired operation within the possible limits of operation of the regulator.
When using the transformer (stabilization, the normal voltage of the generator is quickly reestablished, so as to appreciably reduce the hanging motion and the variations in the voltage above and below its normal value. The regulator can be built inexpensively and contained in a space-saving cabinet, and operates within narrow limits, so there is no need to use a special generator with low voltage regulation.
