Description

Container for transport, of the so-called .container type.

The object of the present invention is a container for transport, of the container type, designed more especially for sea transport.

We know that, more and more, the use of containers is replacing that of old packaging by nailed boxes or baskets, this packaging method being considerably more advantageous, both because of the ease and economy of handling. it provides protection against breakage.

The usual containers, formed by steel boxes, however have various drawbacks. Especially, in maritime transport, their return empty requiring the same volume as when they are loaded, is very expensive, since it is almost as expensive as going fully loaded, which considerably increases the transport costs.

With metal containers, repairs are difficult: they require the container to be completely immobilized.

The container according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises at least six reinforcing frame panels comprising a bottom and a top carrying vertical assembly pins and at least four sides pegging on these pins between the bottom and the top in a vertical position to form the container in the form of a box as well as flat to form a block of reduced volume for empty transport.

In such a container, a damaged or lost panel could be replaced with a similar part, so that repairs would not immobilize the container. The empty return journeys are made in the folded state in a space reduced to a minimum.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the container according to the invention.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the mounted container.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container folded up for the return empty.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the base element.

Fig. 4 is a section of this element.

Fig. 5 is a front view of a side panel.

Fig. 6 is a sectional view of this panel along the line VI-VI of FIG. 5.

Fig. 7 shows the overall arrangement of the side panels.

Figs. 8 and 9 show in detail, respectively in section and in front, the assembly of the panels with the base.

Fig. 10 is a sectional view of the assembly of two panels.

Fig. 11 represents the roof seen from below.

Fig. 12 is a section along the line
XII-XII of fig. 11.

The container is made up of six removable elements: a base 1, a roof 2 and four side panels 3, 4, 5 and 6. These panels are identical and reversible. They are assembled with the base 1, with the roof 2 and between them by means of a set of pins and wedges cooperating with suitably formed orifices allowing fixing both for the assembled container (fig. 1) and for the dismantled elements. and superimposed (fig. 2).

In the mounted position, the panels 3 and 5 extend over the entire width of the base 1. In the length direction, the panels 4 and 6 do not lie flush with the edge of the base 1, the complement being provided by the thickness of panels 3 and 5 (fig. 1 and 7).

The height of the panels is equal to half of the length of the base 1. In this way, when the panels are dismantled, two panels 3 and 4 or 5 and 6 (fig. 2) can be juxtaposed to occupy the total surface of the panel. base 1 (or roof 2). In this position, the pins provided on the base 1 or the roof 2, which are used for mounting the container, cooperate with the holes in the panels 3 to 6 to ensure their connection and to form a reduced volume with the folded elements.

The base 1 consists of a frame 7 of hardwood, suitable squaring provided with spacers 8, all assembled with tenons and mortises and consolidated by steel frames 9. Frame and spacers are covered with a wooden floor. wood 10, possibly reinforced by a sheet.

The base also carries four feet 11, made of hard wood or metal, of suitable dimensions to meet regulatory requirements. Each of these feet 11 is notched to present a transverse notch 12. This notch has a dual purpose: it is intended to receive the fixing pins on the platforms of wagons or other transport vehicles; it also serves to allow passage to an axle which, provided with running rollers, facilitates movement of the container.

In the parts constituting the frame 7 are arranged metal pins 13, shown in detail in fig. 8 and 9, serving to fix the panels both vertically (fig. 1) and horizontally (fig. 2). Rings 14 are preferably provided on the longitudinal struts 8 of sufficient cross section to withstand a force double the normal lifting force.

The panels 3, 4, 5 and 6 (fig. 5 to 10) are identical to each other and each is symmetrical with respect to its two main axes, so that the four panels are reversible. Each panel is formed of a hardwood frame 15 with spacer 16, lined with parquet 17 in wood or plywood, if necessary reinforced with a sheet of metal. The frame is reinforced at the corners by metal brackets 18. It carries, suitably arranged, orifices 19, eight in number for the passage of assembly pins. These orifices are advantageously protected by metal plates 20. Handles 31 can be provided for handling. Each panel has a length equal to the width of the base 1; its height is equal to half the length of the base 1.

In this way, two juxtaposed and laid flat panels occupy the total surface of the base 1 for the empty return of the container. In the frame 15, with each transverse hole 19 is associated a longitudinal hole crossing the first. The holes are so arranged that they can fit together, in all positions, in the pins 13 of the base 1 (or those of the roof).

With this arrangement, the panels are assembled as shown in FIG. 7. Once the panel 3 is mounted, the perpendicular panels 4 and 6 are applied at the end, their outer edge towards the front coming into contact with the rear face of the panel 3.

These assembled, the panel 5 comes to rest at the end on the panels 4 and 6.

The panels are fixed to the base 1 as shown in fig. 8 and 9. The frame 7 of the base is crossed by the pins 13 having a support plate 21 secured to the frame 7 and below by means of countersunk screws for example. In the upper end of the pin 13 which protrudes, the hole 19 formed in the frame 15 of the panel is fitted. The pin 13 has a slot 22 in which the key 23 is wedged. The latter may include holes such as 24 in which the usual tamper-evident seals are introduced.

The assembly of two panels between them is done in a similar way (fig. 10). The vertical uprights 15 of two neighboring panels being contiguous, the orthogonal openings 19, transverse for the im, longitudinal for the other, are facing each other. A movable spindle 25 which is fixed by means of a key 23 as above is introduced into these two holes extending here from the other. The roof 2 of the container (fig. 11 and 12) has a trapezoidal profile, the ratio of the height to the base being low and just sufficient to ensure a suitable slope for the flow of water. It consists of four vertical crossbars 26 interconnected by two elements 27 of hardwood.

On all the sleepers 26 and the longitudinal elements 27 forming a frame is mounted a floor 28 lined with an impermeable material, metal or other. The eadre carries under fixed pins; 29 analogous to those of base 1 and assemble to the side panels in the same way as described above. The sleepers may be pierced with holes 30 through which, when the container is dismantled, the slings for the rope of the superimposed panels could be passed flat and in a manner analogous to that of FIG. 2
 (32).

It can be seen that, once the panels 3, 4, 5, 6 have been erected and assembled with the base 1, it suffices to lay the roof, the pins 29 thereof fitting into the holes 19 of the panels formed in the upper part of their frame. The container is thus covered and its final closure is ensured by the keys passing through the slots of the pins 29, as has been explained with regard to the pins 13.

Disassembly is carried out in reverse order by releasing the keys and detaching the roof, the panels and the base.

Two panels 3, 4 are placed flat on the base 1, the pins 13 engage in their holes 19. Two other panels 5, 6 are superimposed on the first, then the roof 2 is placed above them, the pins 29 of the roof engage in their holes 19. The whole is assembled by two slings 32 in chain or cable provided with hooks which pass through the rings 14.
the assembled container is sealed by seals passing through the holes 24 of the keys 23. These can only be released by breaking these seals. This protection, suitable for customs, would however not be sufficient to protect against theft, if the container could be opened easily.

But with the arrangement described, this is not the case, since in order to open the container and reach its contents, it is necessary to release all the ribs from the roof 2, then raise the latter sufficiently to release all the pins.

This operation requires the assistance of at least two men, so that it cannot be carried out without attracting attention, which protects the container from theft.

The handling of the container is normally done by the usual lifting means using the rings 14 of the base 1. However, in the event that these lifting means are lacking, one can pass through the slots 12 of the feet 11 of the Tubular axles which will be held in place by keys and at the ends of which rollers or wheels will be fixed.

The container as described and shown is designed to meet regulatory requirements and in particular those of the Union
Intercontinental of Railways. But, when one is not limited by these conditions, and especially when it is used to transport goods of low density, its capacity can be doubled by superimposing on the panels 3, 4, 5, 6 a set of identical panels assembled with the first by movable pins and keys. The com container then carries eight panels instead of four.

Its assembly and its folding are carried out as indicated above.

The container according to the invention can be applied to transport other than by rail, since it can include any adaptation to the different transport vehicles used.

For air transport in particular, the container can be simplified. The base 1, instead of having a resistant parquet, can be in plywood or better still in balsa wood reinforced with a sheet of duralumin. Likewise, everything can be done with a balsa filling covered with aluminum sheet. Instead of two slinging loops, more can be provided, in particular allowing the passage of stretchers to facilitate handling by hand.

The panels may be imitated with a heat-insulating coating or provided with ventilation openings, or include any device capable of ensuring the internal conditioning of the container.

The entire container can also be arranged so as to obtain a determined temperature. It may include all devices necessary to ensure refrigeration either permanent or at regular intervals. Thus one can provide one of the panels lined with a removable box containing a cold accumulator, such as ordinary ice, dry ice, brine, etc. or a heat accumulator, also dissolved salt for example. Or the container can be associated with a compressor unit connected to the stops on an electrical network.

For the air transport of certain goods, such as liquids in vials or ampoules, for example, the container is designed to keep a constant pressure inside, so as to avoid bursts caused by pressure differences due to variations in temperature. 'altitude.
