Process for the production of pencil shafts.
The invention relates to the production of pencil shafts, which are intended to replace the usual shafts made of cedar or other wood.
The wood suitable for making pencils is. rare, and many years ago attempts were made to replace wood with paper, but paper is even rarer than wood.
In addition to a method for producing pencil shafts, the invention relates to a pencil shaft produced according to this and a device for performing the method.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that a solvent for the plastic is added to a powdery, plastic-containing molding compound in such an amount that it retains its powder character and a. Pressed on an extrusion press with screw feed without external heat input, so that it can then be cut by hand with a knife. A pen provided with the shaft according to the invention can therefore be sharpened in the usual way by means of a knife.
The molding compound containing plastic can, for. B. processed into sticks or parts of sticks, from which the pens are made by known methods, such as in the manufacture of pencils, with wooden shafts.
Exemplary embodiments of the invention are explained below.
The plastic component of the molding compound can be a cellulose derivative, e.g. B. nitracellulose, acetyl cellulose, and use talc as filler with or without other ingredients, such as. B. ethyl cellulose, cellulose ester, casein, urea or phenol formaldehyde, nylon, polyethylene, vinyl chloride acetate or its polymers, or you can also use acrylic type plastics and talc or wood flour or cellulose individually or as filler mixed.
The molding compound forms a powdery mixture which, after pressing, must be able to be cut by hand with a knife without external heat input. Appropriately, a molding compound is mixed from cellulose derivatives, such as nitro-cellulose or acetate cellulose or polyethylene derivatives, e.g. B. polymerized styron, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate or the like mixed with talc and wood flour in the following proportions: plastic with or without plasticizer 254Q / o talc 5-20 / o wood flour 40-70%
In an exemplary embodiment, the molding compound contains a plastic binder and a filler as well as a solvent for the plastic.
Cellulose derivatives such as nitro or acetyl cellulose can be used as binders. The filler may contain talc or wood flour, or both, and other additives, e.g. B. gypsum, starch, cellulose, cellulose hydrate, clay or the like. The mixture of filler and plastic is made by means of a solvent, e.g. B. acetone, alcohol, ether or the like, and processed in a suitable machine to a homogeneous mass, which however still has the properties of a powder. It is now ready for use. These mixtures are then processed in a high-pressure extruder with screw feed, the mixture being pressed out through a nozzle which saves a groove for the mine, e.g.
B. it can be pressed out in the form of a hollow rod, which is adapted to the particular shape of the mine to be used. The mine can be cylindrical or square in cross-section, with smooth surfaces or grooves in the same.
Graphite rods, which are manufactured in any way, can conveniently be inserted into the bore of the pressed rod during the pressing out. For this purpose, the nozzle can be designed so that the pressed mass is fed from the side of the nozzle, so that the rear part of the nozzle, i.e. H. the part opposite the nozzle opening is free. A needle which causes the central bore is attached to the rear part.
This needle is not full, but tubular, of the type used on a machine to cover the conductors of electrical cables, and the graphite sticks can be inserted into the needle one after the other during extrusion and can thus automatically be inserted into the central bore of the pen casing be brought and fixed in it.
However, an extrusion machine can also be used, which allows the graphite rods to be fed in from the end of the press screw. Such a construction offers considerable practical advantages.
The. Shafts can also be made in parts, which are glued together using an adhesive after the lead has been inserted. They can be made in the form of semi-cylindrical, hexagonal, square or similar profiles with grooves for the lead and these can be glued together after inserting the latter as in normal pencil production; or the shaft can be made in the form of a solid rod with a deep slot on one side, which slot is closed in some way by the same material as the shaft after the lead is inserted.
Pen shafts can be made from a composition that contains a percentage of more than 50% plastic or only plastic, in such a way that gas bubbles are generated in them, creating a shaft that is light and can be cut more easily with a knife. The method for generating gas bubbles inside the plastic or the plastic composition can be a method known for gas generation, e.g. B. by adding a sufficient amount of suitable salts, such as sodium carbonate, ammonium carbonate or the like, which give off gas under the influence of the heat developed during the pressing process without external heat supply.
The wooden shaft of the pencil is replaced in this way by a shaft made of plastic composition, whose properties come close to those of wood, so that it can be sharpened with a knife in the usual way. The shape of the shafts so produced can be any, the profile can be circular or hexagonal or any other desired shape, and the shafts can be grooved around the graphite to reduce weight.
The accompanying schematic drawing shows, for example, in section a head of an extrusion press for producing pens of the type described above, without external heat supply.
The main parts of this head are as follows: that it can then be cut by hand with a knife.
