The subject of this invention is -a combustion device, in particular for an internal combustion turbine installation, comprising an outer casing delimiting a channel for pressurized air and in which is disposed a combustion chamber, and at least one outlet burner in this combustion chamber and in which liquid fuel is injected and mixed with the air derived from said channel, the burning mixture leaving the burner, sweeping the exterior of this burner to heat it before flowing to the outlet from the combustion chamber, the products of the completed combustion leaving the device diluted in an excess of pressurized air flowing through said channel.
The combustion device according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises an adjustable closure member to adjust the admission of air into the burner.
The possibility of adjusting the air intake into the burner is particularly advantageous in the event that, which may happen, the flow of fuel supplied to the device varies to a considerable extent without the flow of pressurized air being 'flowing in the channel is modified accordingly.
The drawing shows, by way of example, two embodiments of the combustion device according to the invention. Fig. 1 is an axial section of a first embodiment, for an internal combustion turbine, according to I-I of FIG. 2.
Fig. 2 is a section along II-II of FIG. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sections similar to those of FIGS. 1 and 2, of a second embodiment, also for an internal combustion turbine.
The same references are used, as far as possible, to designate the corresponding parts of the two embodiments described.
In the two examples shown, air supplied by a compressor is used as combustion air and as dilution air, the combustion air being the air necessary to carry out and terminate the combustion, and the exhaust air. dilution being mixed with the products of combustion to lower their temperature to a value which is acceptable for the turbine supplied by the combustion device.
The combustion device shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, comprises a tubular outer casing 13 delimiting a channel 14 along which the compressed air flows from left to right in FIG. 1.
Inside this casing, and separated from it by studs not shown, is a combustion chamber 12 having a side wall comprising three overlapping annular cylindrical elements 31, 32 and 33, the element 33 being arranged. outside and spaced from element 32 to allow some of the air flowing through the outer casing to enter the combustion chamber and to flow along the inner wall of the element 33. Likewise, part of the air flowing in the outer casing enters through a slot made between the elements 31 and 32 and flows against the inner wall of the element 32.
Thus, the elements 32 and 33 are thermally insulated from the ignited mixture which is inside the combustion chamber.
The upstream end of the combustion chamber is closed by a circular screen 16 fitted into the adjacent end of said element 31. A cup-shaped cover 23 is also fitted onto element 31; this cover 23 and the screen 16 forming between them a chamber 23 'at the front of the combustion chamber 12. The cover 23 is provided, at its center, with an adjustable air intake 25, through which the air coming from the channel 14 enters the chamber 23 '. The screen 16 is pierced with a series of holes 17 arranged in a circle and in which the J-shaped tubes 19 constituting burners are fixed by the open ends 18 of their straight branches, which are mutually parallel. (Only two tubes 19 are shown).
The exhaust ends 20 of these tubes 19 are curved towards the front of the combustion chamber into which they open.
A liquid fuel, such as kerosene, is injected into the tubes 19 through the open ends of their straight branches by means of fuel supply tubes 21. This fuel injected into the air entering the tubes 19 from the space 23 'formed between the cover 23 and the screen 16. forms with this air an inflammable mixture which begins to burn in said tubes and escapes from the exhaust ends 20 into the space surrounding the tubes 19. This mixture is diluted in this space by air which reaches it in sufficient quantity through the slots formed between the elements 31, 32 and 33, to ensure practically complete combustion.
The flaming mixture exiting the exhaust ends of the J-shaped tubes sweeps the outside of these tubes and brings them to a high temperature and thus helps to vaporize the fuel injected into the inlet end of said tubes.
The mixture of the burnt gas then leaves the downstream end 37 of the combustion chamber to mix with the dilution air passing through the device via the channel 14.
The air intake 25 of the cover 23 is constituted by holes 27 drilled in the central part of said cover and arranged in a circle concentric with the latter. The degree of opening of these holes is determined according to the angular position of a closure disc 26 pivoted in the center of the cover 23 and pierced with holes 26 'also arranged in a circle and capable of being brought opposite the holes 27 cover (see fig. 2).
A control rod 29 makes it possible to modify the adjustment position of the shutter disc 26.
The aforesaid shutter disc makes it possible to adjust the degree of opening of the air intake 25 and, in this way, to freely control the quantity of air admitted into the space 23 'between the cover 23 and the screen 16, and intended for supplying the tubes 19 forming the burners.
By adjusting the quantity of air entering the tubes 19 as a function of the quantity of fuel supplied to the combustion device, the air / fuel ratio can be maintained practically constant in the tubes 19, at least when the device is running. operation at low load and up to the point at which the maximum quantity of air passes through the burners formed by the tubes 19. The device described is arranged in such a way that when the air intake is open to the maximum, the greater part of the air entering the combustion chamber 12 enters it through the tubes 19.
This arrangement has an appreciable advantage, given that it makes it possible to adjust the quantity of air entering the tubes 19 independently of the quantity of air supplied to the chamber, which makes it possible to ensure a richness of the mixture. favorable to combustion when the chamber is operated at low load, that is to say with a reduced fuel supply, even if the total quantity of air supplied to the chamber is not reduced.
The control rod 29 can be actuated by the speed regulator of the installation, so as to automatically adjust the flow of air entering the tubes 19 as a function of the flow of fuel. A compensating device may be provided to automatically ensure a substantially constant air / fuel weight ratio in the tubes 19, regardless of variations in the pressure of the air supplied to the device.
Thanks to the adjustable closure member of the air intake 25, it is possible to maintain the air / fuel ratio in the tubes 19 at a value favorable to the proper functioning of the device regardless of very pronounced variations in the total fuel air ratio. Tests have shown that for the device shown, the air / fuel ratio in the tubes 19 must be maintained at about 12-15 for good combustion to be obtained. If this ratio rises too much, up to about 20, the reaction time becomes too great; if, on the other hand, it falls, the combustion carried out in the burners is insufficient.
On the other hand, the total combustible air ratio can easily vary between 50 to 120 for the operation under load of the installation supplied by the device described and may amount to approximately 300 to 350 during idling. Without an adjusting member, the air entering the tubes 19 / total air ratio would remain substantially constant and it would be necessary to size the air intake corresponding to the inlet of the tubes 19 so that the air entering these tubes / fuel ratio is a maximum of about 20 to prevent the burners from going out, which would reduce this ratio to about 3 when running at full load.
This value would be clearly insufficient to obtain a good efficiency of the device.
On the other hand, the adjustment member of the device described makes it possible to adopt an air ratio entering the tubes 19 / fuel of around 12 to 15 for the operation under load of the installation and to maintain this ratio within acceptable limits (at below 20) for idling, by reducing the degree of opening of the air intake.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 3 and 4, the screen 16 of the combustion chamber 12 carries nozzles 39 through which additional air enters this chamber 1: 2 from the chamber 23 '. These nozzles 39 have slot-shaped outlet ports 40.
The nozzles 39 are mounted in openings made in the screen 16 and disposed between the openings of the exhaust ends 20 of the adjacent tubes 19. Fan-shaped jets of air are thus projected through the slots 40 between said exhaust openings, therefore between the tubes 19, into the ignited mixture of air and liquid fuel exiting the tubes 19, so that substantially complete combustion is ensured in the combustion chamber despite its very short axial length and that excessive heating of the tubes 19 is satisfactorily prevented.
For the rest, this embodiment is identical to that of FIGS. 1 and 2.
In this embodiment of FIGS. 3 and 4, the closing of the air intake 25 by the disc 26, however, also has the effect of reducing the quantity of air entering through the nozzles 39 into the chamber 12. This point is however not important, given that at low loads the air entering through the tubes 19 is sufficient to ensure complete combustion of the fuel.
