In denn.
Method and device for conveying fuel from the tank to the engine in aircraft intended for high altitude flights. The present invention relates to a method and a device for conveying the fuel from the tank to the engine in aircraft that are intended for flights at great heights, and is intended to be up to a certain height, the vapor and bubble formation of the fuel for the pump operation un harmful.
Feed pumps that create the fuel from the tanks to the injection pumps or Ver gasers of the aircraft engine or the gas turbine, namely suffer from a certain flight altitude under the boil and the vapor bubble formation of the volatile fuel, which is a sharp drop in the pressure and the Pumping capacity of the pumps caused and in some cases even lead to a complete failure of the pumps.
The pressure drop in the atmosphere at high altitudes and the relatively high temperature of the fuel compared to the outside temperature (practically the ground temperature) are the primal wafts of this boiling and the formation of vapor bubbles. Particularly new: temporary jet planes, whose rate of climb and peak height are significantly higher than those of propeller-driven machines, are in their further development with their high fuel consumption and he:
reaching the performance limit due to the difficulties mentioned. The following measures are known to remedy the above-mentioned difficulties: a) The fuel tank is kept under constant ground pressure, that is, under excess pressure against the outside atmosphere. This measure is hardly in practice. applicable because it requires very robust tank structures that are hardly portable in terms of weight.
The danger of explosion from the fuel tanks being under overpressure in the event of a leak or damage or through fire continued to lead to the rejection of this option.
b) There is an additional cooling of the fuel before or during the flight in order to delay the entry of boiling despite the pressure drop. This measure is prohibited in most cases due to the scope and weight of the necessary equipment for the considerable amounts of liquid in question.
c) Before or in the feed pumps, the vapor bubbles are mechanically removed by means of guide plates at the impeller inlet, by centrifuging the fuel,
excreted by conveyor screws with flanks protruding above the leading edge and other things. However, even the best solutions to date cannot avoid pressure and delivery losses of up to 30% in the feed lines to the engine under today's flight conditions.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the fuel is held at a pressure before it enters the delivery pump which, within limits, is equal to the pressure near the ground, depending on the state of the fuel in the tank.
This compression pressure, which only prevails at the feed pump inlet, does not affect the tank walls and in no way affects the boiling of the remaining tank contents, but rather. creates only normal conditions for the feed pump.
In order to achieve a constant ground pressure at the feed pump inlet, according to the invention, according to a rotary feed pump to feed the fuel to the engine, a rotary pre-compressor is connected upstream, the feed pressure of which is at least twice the pressure close to the ground,
so that even with a 50% drop in the performance of the pre-compressor due to high altitude, normal soil pressure conditions prevail at the feed pump inlet.
A valve is advantageously provided between the Varverdichfier and the feed pump, which regulates the pressure at the feed pump inlet by discharging fuel into the tank in such a way that it is equal to the bottom pressure.
In the accompanying drawing, an exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown schematically, by means of which an example of the method according to the invention is also explained.
In the bottom 1 of the fuel tank 2 there is an opening 4 reinforced by the ring 3, which is closed to the outside by the tub 5. The trough 5 has an eye 6 in which the centering bolt 7 is fastened by means of the nut 8 using the seal 9. Eccentric to this eye, the tub 5 has one.
outwardly directed pipe connection 10, which is inwardly through the pipe 12 with the lower part 13 of the Pum pengehäuses in connection.
On this lower part 13 an attachment 14 is fastened ben 15 by screws. The motor housing 17 and the sealing hood 18 are fastened to the attachment 14 by a plurality of screws 16, the latter having a sealing ring 19 which is pressed against the seal 22 by means of the ring 20. The axis 23 of the motor rotor 24 is mounted in the ball bearings 25 and 26.
The shaft 27, on which the feed screw 29 and the supercharger screw 28 are keyed, is attached to the motor axis. The lower end of the shaft 27 is mounted in the centering bolt 7 and supported in the axial direction by a ball 30 or a pivot bearing. The existing part of the shaft 27 above the feed screw 29 is mounted in the sleeve 34, which is sealed by a cone 33 in the attachment 14.
The sealing of the shaft 27 in the direction of the motor can be achieved, for example, by a stuffing box 38.
In then. Lower part 13, which forms the pre-compressor A with the pre-compressor screw 28, the pre-compressor screw is mounted in such a way that the lower end of the screw protrudes over the lower edge 40 of the lower part. The pre-compressor screw 28 is surrounded by an annular space 42, from which a channel 43 leads to the annular space 44, which is arranged above the delivery screw 29.
The delivery screw 29 and the associated attachment 14 form the actual delivery pump B. The delivery screw protrudes over the upper edge 45 of the attachment 14. An annular space 46 is arranged over this edge and is connected to the tank space of rank 2 via space 47 and hole 48. Uni the lower part 13 is a sheet metal cup 49. The Bo has an upward funnel 50.
The Bohriuig of the funnel 50 is. smaller than the diameter of the Vorv he Dichterschrau be 28, and between the edge 51 of the funnel 50 and the lower edge 40 of the lower part 13 there is an intermediate space 52, -der with the annular space 53 between the cup 49 and the lower part 13 in connec tion stands.
In addition to the closure of the opening 4, the trough 5 forms the inlet of the precompressor, the fuel flowing in the direction of the arrows drawn. The part of the pre-compressor screw 28 projecting slightly above the lower edge 40 of the lower housing part hurls vapor and air bubbles in a known manner between this edge 40 and the A.blenkra.nd 51, which escape through the space 53 into the tank contents.
The drain 50 prevents the thrown-off bubbles from flowing back - this is done by pre-compressor A, as this usually cannot be avoided due to the high suction effect at the pump inlet.
The build-up of larger bubbles at this critical point, which would cause the liquid to tear off if the fuel boiled too much, with the consequence of a complete failure of the pump, is therefore reliably avoided.
The fuel brought by the pre-compressor A close to the ground to twice the ground pressure enters the actual feed pump B through the overflow channel 43.
The control valve 60 is connected to this overflow channel 43, which is set so that the ground irivek at the inlet of the feed pump B is maintained up to a certain altitude.
When flying at lower altitudes and the supercharger is accordingly delivered too strongly, the excess fuel is returned to the tank through this valve. The deflecting plate 54 at the inlet of the feed pump B is used for further vapor bubble separation and also ventilates through the hole 48 into the. Cup 49 rising propellant flow.
The fuel supplied by the feed pump B is fed to the engine via the annular space 57, the channel 58 and the line 61.
