Fig. 2 stellt eine der verwendeten Walzen dar.
Device for guiding film strips with a thickness of a few tens of microns when wet.
The present invention relates to a device for guiding strips of film several tens of microns thick when wet. The wet state should be understood here to mean a state in which the guide surface and the film strip are separated by a thin layer of liquid.
Einriehtungen of the type mentioned are z. B. Development machines in which film strips made of regenerated cellulose and provided with an image and / or visual recording to be developed are passed through a liquid. Another example are machines in which film strips made of acetyl cellulose, the surface of which is to be saponified, are passed through a liquid in order to make the surface suitable for receiving a material that is sensitive to light and in which a picture or sound recording is to be applied.
When the film is passed over cylindrical rollers without a flange, the disadvantage often arises that the film tends to shift sideways across the surface of the roller, as a result of which the film finally leaves the roller surface. If, in order to avoid this disadvantage, cylindrical rollers with flanges are used, the film will, due to insufficient rigidity in the transverse direction, endeavor to run either with the edge on one of the flange, which has the consequence that the film edge is beaded and the If necessary, fold the film or work over the flange if it is small.
The cause of these phenomena is due to the fact that in most machines the roller shaft, e.g. B. as a result of incorrect assembly of the same, or because the assembly requires a certain mobility of the shaft, is not exactly perpendicular to the propulsion direction of the film or forms an angle with the plane in which the film is fed to the roller.
If the film were guided over the roller in a dry state, the described consequences of the uneven, mutual position of the roller and the film could be avoided by using rollers with a barrel-shaped, that is to say convex, surface. The dry film will also shift sideways over this surface.
The applicant has found that the amount of friction between the roller surface and the film determines whether the film moves towards the highest or lowest point on the roller surface opposite the roller shaft. In the case mentioned, in which the film is in a dry state, the friction is usually so great that the center line of the film shifts sideways until the highest point of the roller surface is reached, i.e. for the state considered here the point that represents the the greatest distance from the roller shaft, in the position that it would occupy if it were mounted in the correct way.
Correct assembly is to be understood here as meaning that the roller shaft extends parallel to the plane in which the film is fed and is perpendicular to the direction of movement of the film.
However, if the film is a few tens of microns thick when wet, and especially if it is in a liquid bath, this measure is ineffective, since, due to the presence of a lubricating layer of liquid between the roller surface and the film, the friction is insufficient to prevent that the film still slides off the roller.
In the device according to the invention, a roller is provided with a concave profile of that part of the surface with which the wet film strip is in contact.
This has the effect that in the event of an inaccurate installation of the roller shaft, the film will shift a little sideways over the roller surface, but only so far that the center line of the film always moves over that part of the roller surface that is initially in the position of the roller shaft which this would occupy if properly arranged. This prevents the film from sliding off the side of the roller, since on both sides of this surface point there are surface parts which are at a greater distance from the mentioned wave.
The consequence of this is that one is independent of the correct type of installation of the roller shaft within relatively wide limits, while on the other hand, when the roller shaft is correctly installed, for example, lateral movements of the film due to the movement of the liquid do not result in the fact that the film runs off the roller.
There are devices known for advancing films in the wet state, in which rollers with a concave profile are used. However, this concave surface is not used to guide the film, but exclusively to avoid the film part, which is provided on both sides with a light-sensitive emulsion layer, from being damaged as a result of contact with the roller surface. The film is guided here exclusively via cylindrical parts of the roller surface, which extend on both sides of the concave part, which is possible because the film has sufficient rigidity in the transverse direction. This type of drive cannot be carried out in the case of using thin and therefore flexible films.
In contrast, in the device according to the invention, the part of the roller surface provided with a concave profile is in contact with the film strip.
The invention is explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 shows part of a developing machine in which films made from regenerated cellulose or similar flexible material are developed.
Fig. 2 shows one of the rollers used.
In the developing machine 1 (FIG. 1), a film strip 2 made of regenerated cellulose with a thickness of about 40 to 50 z runs in vertical loops over two groups of rollers whose shafts are parallel to one another. The shafts of the rollers 3 of the one group, which lie in a plane above and parallel to the liquid surface, are driven. The shafts of the rollers 4 of the other group, which are arranged in the developing liquid and separately movable up and down in a vertical direction via guide rods 5, serve to guide the film and keep it taut by their weight.
If, as a result of inaccurate assembly, a roller shaft either encloses an angle of a few degrees with the plane in which the film tape is fed from a preceding roller, or in this plane not exactly perpendicular to the direction of advance of the film, i.e. in the figure not perpendicular to the If the plane is in the drawing, the film will shift sideways across the roller surface in order to finally leave it. In order to avoid this, the surface of the rollers, over which the film is guided in the wet state, has a concavely profiled part with which the film is in contact. The roller thus has a concave profile of the little part of the surface with which the wet film tape is in contact.
The effect of this measure is explained in FIG. 2. The wet film strip is fed in a plane parallel to the drawing plane in the direction of the arrow 7 to the roller 8 which has no guide flanges and which is provided with a concavely profiled surface. The film strip guided over this roller surface is then removed from the roller in the direction of arrow 9. The roller shaft 10 is improperly mounted such that it is not perpendicular to the direction of advance 7 of the film. If the roller shaft 10 were correctly installed, it would assume the position indicated by the dashed line 11.
In the case shown, the film is shifted so far to the left that its center line 12 coincides with the point 13 of the roller surface, which is the first of the striated line 11. In this way it is avoided that, despite the incorrect assembly of the roller, the film will run off the roller in a lateral direction.
