Process for the production of permanent magnets. The invention relates to a method for producing permanent magnets using a magnetically anisotropic material, the values for (BH) ", a" being the remanence B,. and the coercive force H ,, in a certain direction (preferred direction) turn out to be greater than that in other directions,
-en achievable values.
Such magnets can have a (BH) "" "of more than 2.5 X 10s in the preferred direction, which exceeds the highest value that was previously achievable with magnetically isotropic, permanently magnetic materials, that is, materials that can be achieved Values for (BH) "a" the remanence and the coercive force are practically the same in all directions.
So far, the magnetically anisotropic, permanent magnetic materials used in practice consisted of alloys containing Fe, Ni, Al and Co, with the usual, unavoidable impurities and with or without additional elements, such as essentially Cu and Ti. Um To achieve the anisotropy properties, the alloys are subjected to the influence of a magnetic field during a heat treatment, preferably during the cooling required for hardening, from a temperature above the Curie point.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that a 26 to 30% Co, 8 to 20% Ni, 5 to 11% Al,
Iron alloy containing 5 to 10% Ti -during cooling from a temperature exceeding the Curie point of the alloy to a temperature below this point by at least 100 C under the action of a magnetic field, in such a way that after tempering and final magnetization of the magnetic body in a direction at least almost corresponding to the direction of the magnetic field during the cooling mentioned, a magnet is created,
which in this preferred direction has a (BH) ", value of at least 2.5 X 10s and a coercive force of at least 750 Örsted. The coercive force will usually exceed 800 Örsted and can be 1200 Örsted. The remanence can be at least 7000 Gauss and in most cases even more than 8000 Gauss. In view of the high coercive force, it must generally not be expected that the remanence will exceed 8500 Gauss.
Up to 8% Cu is expediently added to the above-mentioned alloy. In addition, other elements or combinations thereof can also be present which can aim at improving the machinability of the alloy used, influencing the cooling rate during hardening or improving the mechanical or magnetic properties.
Such elements are expediently only added in small amounts up to a few percent (generally not more than 2%), otherwise the special result achieved is at the expense of the other properties.
In connection with the above, it will be evident that with the invention very high coercive forces can be achieved with a favorable (BH). ", And even with a favorable remanence, so that the apparatus technology has new magnets with very special properties This is of particular importance if the length of the magnet caused by the coercive force plays a decisive role with regard to the desired dimensioning of the device to be built in which the magnet is to be used (e.g.
B. in motors, dynamos, loudspeakers, measuring devices, etc.). In this way, it is possible to build radio receivers with speakers that can be put in your pocket. As a result of the fact that in this case the height of the ring-shaped magnet to be used can only be 8 mm, the dimensions of such a device need not be greater than that of a wallet.
Also for use in loudspeakers when installed in television receivers; where the depth of the speakers used. suitable and available space next to the projection screen of the order of magnitude of a few centimeters, the magnets produced according to the invention are particularly advantageous. In such a case, the height of the magnet only needs to be 14.5 mm. The alloys used in the present invention can be achieved in various ways, namely by melting the constituents and casting the molten alloy or by sintering powdered mixtures of the composing elements or alloys thereof.
With regard to the composition of the alloys used according to the invention, it should be noted that these differ from the alloys previously used for the production of magnetically anisotropic, permanently magnetic material due to the use of a high Co content together with a relatively high Ti content .
In this connection it can be noted that although anisotropic alloys containing up to 30% Co have proven to be very valuable, in practice a cobalt content in the upper part of this range was not preferred because of the high cost of cobalt.
As far as the use of titanium in magnetically anisotropic, permanent magnetic materials is concerned. it is known that the coercive force is improved: this, however, always at the expense of (BII), "", and the remanence. For this reason, most magnetically anisotropic, permanent magnetic materials are in practice with little or no.
small titanium additives and was given in the literature 51 / o as the upper limit. Applicant has found that when using a Co content of 26 to 30% with suitable adaptation of the other alloy elements, the titanium content,
while maintaining a favorable (BH) ",", value and a high coercive force, it can be increased to over 51 / o; A titanium content of 5.1 to 8% has proven to be most favorable. The high costs due to the high cobalt content are in this case due to the possibility of
to obtain a magnet with a remarkably high coercive force is balanced. As far as the nickel content is concerned, it should be noted that an increase in the Ni content generally results in an improvement in the coercive force at the expense of the remanence. The use of copper is not. necessary, and levels of more than 811 / o are even harmful.
It has been found that the best magnetic values arise when about 4% becomes Cu. As usual, the AI content can be adapted to the remaining components.
To achieve optimal magnetic properties, it is desirable that the magnetic body from a temperature of about 1225 C to about 6000 C at a middle speed of
EMI0003.0003
is cooled down to 100 per second, according to the composition of the alloy, after which one is free in the manner of further cooling down to room temperature.
During this cooling, which takes place either immediately after the magnet body has been formed by casting or sintering or after cooling to room temperature and heating up again to about 1225 C, the aforementioned laser field is applied. The strength of this field is preferably at least 1000 Gauss. After the heat treatment, the magnet still has to be left on, which can be done in ways that have already been applied in technology, such as
B. in UK Patent No. 522731 of the Applicant has been described. The event can be initiated immediately if required. take place after the aforementioned cooling.
It glows. one that, given the fact that in the present case the alloys are composed of at least five elements, the application is not able to indicate which percentages of the alloy components of the mentioned area should not be combined with one another, with that in mind. that otherwise the specified .requirements with regard to the minimum values of the coercive force and the (BH) ", a @ cannot be met.
On the basis of the above instructions for the constituent elements of the alloy and the instructions for the treatment of the alloy, however, the person skilled in the art will always be able to make such a choice from the various possibilities for each case that a previously determined, desired result is achieved; It must be taken into account that the maximum achievable values for the coercive force do not occur together with the maximum achievable values for the emanence.
The requirement that may be made in every case that occurs is that the coercive force should be at least 750 Örsted with a (BH) .. "of at least 2.5 X 106. The mentioned highest and lowest gripping points for the Alloy elements should be understood in this context.
As an example of an embodiment according to the invention, it should be mentioned that a magnet body made of 29.5% Co, 16% Ni, 5.1% Ti, 7.7% Al, 1% Cu,
The remainder of Fe with an alloy containing impurities is produced by casting and then, either immediately after casting, or after cooling to room temperature and reheating to 12250 C from this temperature to about < B> 6000 C,
This means that the alloy in question is cooled to a temperature above the Curie temperature in five minutes and exposed to a magnetic field of 2000 Gauss during the cooling period.
Then the magnetic body is started by keeping it successively at the following temperatures and times:
