Sperrschichtzelle.
Junction cell. The present invention relates to. a barrier cell, which is useful for photoelectric effect or for current rectification.
It has been found that when hydrogen in a solution is released on a surface that contains selenium, a barrier layer is obtained. It has been shown that the barrier layer can be obtained when using Se len as a cathode in a solution. in which hydrogen is released at the cathode. Practically any simple acid is suitable for this purpose.
The invention relates to a barrier cell which is characterized in that it has a barrier layer consisting predominantly of selenium and hydrogen.
Embodiments of the invention are explained below with reference to the accompanying drawing voltage.
In the figures: FIG. 1 shows a section through a wet selenium cell, FIG. 2 shows a horizontal cross section of a modified cell shape, FIG. 3 shows a vertical cross section of the cell shown in FIG. 2, cut along the line 3-3, and FIG. 4 shows a circuit in which the photoelectric effect of the cell can be observed.
Fig.1 shows. a wet cell, which has a cathode with a barrier layer .. The cell is arranged in a glass bulb, which is generally cylindrical in shape and for practical reasons, a pair of tubular parts 2 and 3 inserted from the head of the cell in the Down cell space, and further suitable vent openings 4 are provided to allow the escape of gas from the cell. Lead wires 5 and 6 are passed through the inserted parts 2 and 3 and can be fused to the glass at 7 and 8 in order to then enter the cell.
The attached to the line 9 anode 11 is made of a conductive material that is not with. Selenium reacts, such as platinum, gold, carbon or palladium or possibly nickel; the lower conductors end at 9 and 10, which are immersed in the liquid, suitably consist of a similar substance that does not react to selenium. The cathode 12 at the lead 8 consists of a substance that does not react with selenium, such as platinum., Gold, carbon, palladium or nickel, on which a selenium barrier layer is formed.
This barrier layer can be applied to the cathode by first coating the cathode with metallic selenium, then metallic selenium is applied to the plate by immersing it as a cathode in an aqueous solution in which, in addition to an acid, such as z. B. sulfuric acid H, SO, selenium dioxide (Se0,) has been dissolved. The selenium-coated cathode 12 is then placed in the cell 1, in which an acid solution 13 is accommodated, the sulfuric acid H =; SO4 (e.g. 20 normal) or any other acid, e.g.
B. HCl, H., P04, H.Se0, or H., Se04, contains. If a corresponding voltage is applied to the anode and cathode, a voltage of about two volts, then hydrogen is released at the cathode 12 covered with selenium and forms the barrier layer on the cathode surface with Se len. This barrier layer consists of selenium and hydrogen. The barrier layer can also be formed in such a way that the plate 12, without being coated with selenium, is immersed as a cathode in a solution of Se0 in water.
The strength of this solution can vary between the limits of 25 and 80 percent by weight Se02 in water. When the voltage in this SeO 2 solution is applied to the anode and the cathode, a barrier layer consisting of selenium and hydrogen is formed directly on the plate 12, without any underlying selenium coating. In this case, the barrier layer can be formed in the vessel 1 itself by using the Se0_ solution instead of the H "SO," solution as bath 13.
FIGS. 2 and 3 illustrate another shape of the cell. The clock-shaped vessel 15 carries a disk-shaped cathode 16 which is held by a rod 17 which is melted into the glass envelope and forms the cathode feed. A platinum leadthrough 18 is used as the anode and a solution of the type used in the cell of FIG. 1 is used as the electrolyte 19.
Either the photoelectric or the rectifying effect of the barrier layer can be used, and this can be done in the wet cell itself. The photoelectric effect can be achieved in a known manner by directing light against the cell, and that is the reason why the cell in such a case should be made of a transparent material such as glass.
Two photoelectric effects can be observed: 1. the electrical resistance decreases with increasing light intensity; 2. the light creates an emf or a change in emf in the cell. The photoelectric effect produced by this type of cell is extremely sharp.
Fig. 4 represents. a circuit in which the photoelectric effect can be used. The photoelectric cell 20, which can have any shape indicated in FIG. 1 or in FIGS. 2 and 3, is shown schematically, the anode and cathode with plus and
called minus. becomes. The source of the electrical voltage is a battery 21, which can be about 2 volts, and the resistor 22 can be any electrical part of a device in which current flows, e.g. a microampere meter or the resistance at the input of an amplifier When switch 23 is closed, the current through resistor 22 changes accordingly with the change in the light intensity of light source 24.
The rectifying effect can be observed by applying an alternating voltage. The current flow is then greater in one direction than in the other.
