Process for the preparation of a benzoxanthene series oxy compound. It has been found that an oxy compound of the benzoxanthene series can be produced if the compound obtained by condensation of a dianotated 1-halo-8-amino-naphthalene with p-benzoquinone and subsequent reduction of the condensation product is mixed with. Treated hydrogen halide from splitting agents.
The 7-oxy-1,9-benzo-xanthene obtained is new and is a valuable intermediate product, especially for the production of dyes. In the purified state, it forms pale greenish-yellow needles or prisms with a melting point of 171 to 1730 and shows in FIG alcoholic or chlorobenzene solution has a yellow color with blue fluorescence.
The condensation products used as starting materials in the present process can be obtained by reacting dianotated 1-halo-8-amino-naphthalenes and p-benzoquinone, for example in an aqueous medium, at room temperature or slightly elevated temperature. The dianotier th 1-halo-8-amino-naphthalenes can contain, for example, chlorine or bromine ent as halogen.
The reaction between the dianotized amine and the quinone leads, with the elimination of nitrogen, very likely to a product of the configuration

By treatment with reducing means, z. B. iron and hydrochloric acid, the two oxo groups are transformed into oxy groups.
The compounds obtainable in this way are now treated according to the invention with agents which split off hydrogen halide. Strong alkalis, such as alkali hydroxides, in particular special sodium and potassium hydroxides, are particularly suitable as such. These hydroxides can expediently be used in the form of low-water melts at temperatures above 1000 C, for example around 150 to 2500 C.
By splitting off hydrogen halide, a heterocyclic six-membered ring is formed and one obtains. a connection with the configuration of the 1,9-benzoxanthene,
EMI0001.0032
which is substituted in the 7-position by a hydroxyl group.
Example: 177.5 parts 1-chloro-8-amino-naphthalene are finely pulverized and mixed well with 300 parts hydrochloric acid and 700 parts ice, then diazotized by adding dropwise a solution of 70 parts sodium nitrite. After half an hour, the excess mineral acid is tamped off with 200 parts of sodium acetate and any impurities are filtered off.
This diazonium solution is slowly run into a solution of 108 parts of p-benzoquinone in 6000 parts of water at 250 ° C. Conversion takes place with the evolution of nitrogen. It is then left to stand for several hours until the reaction has ended. Then filtered; the red-brown precipitate formed is washed off. him well with water. and uses it in a moist state for reduction.
For this purpose, a reduction broth is prepared by stirring 300 parts of iron powder in 3000 parts of alcohol with the addition of 30 parts of about 30% hydrochloric acid. The mixture is boiled with stirring and reflux cooling for a quarter of an hour, then the above brown-red precipitate is slowly introduced in portions. When the addition is complete, the mixture is stirred while boiling for about three hours, then 20 parts of anhydrous sodium carbonate are added and, after 10 minutes, the mixture is filtered while hot.
The alcohol is evaporated to dryness from the filtrate. The residue that remains is a dark brown oil that partially solidifies in a crystalline manner when cold. This oily crude product is now carried, without further purification, into a melt of 500 parts of caustic soda and 50 parts of water at 2000.
First a brownish-yellow crystalline product is formed, then a dark brown pulp, with the separation of salt-like crystals. At the end of the day, hold at around 1800 for a short time and pour 7500 parts of water. The undissolved material is filtered off and the solution is clearly acidified with hydrochloric acid. It turns out a gray, sandy precipitate. After a while it is filtered off, washed and dried.
Since the 7-oxy-benzo-xanthene obtained in this way is still impure, it is best to distil it in vacuo, whereby residual purifications initially cause some foaming, but then remain in the flask as a non-volatile, crumbly residue, while pure 7-oxy- 1,9-benzo-xanthene at 250 to 2570 and 7 mm turn over as a yellow oil that rapidly solidifies to form crystalline crusts. This can be recrystallized from alcohol or from chlorobenzene for complete purification. It then forms pale greenish yellow needles or prisms with a melting point of 171 to 1730. The solutions in alcohol or chlorobenzene are pale yellow with blue-violet fluorescence.
The compound with an intense yellow color and strong green fluorescence dissolves in sulfuric acid. The compound dissolves very easily in dilute sodium hydroxide solution to give a pale yellow, blue-green fluorescent solution. Excess sodium hydroxide solution and the sodium salt precipitate out of concentrated solutions in the form of pearlescent, pale yellow leaves.
