Internal combustion engine cooling installation. The present invention relates to an installation for cooling an internal combustion engine, comprising a centrifugal pump. This installation could in particular use water as a cooling liquid.
One of the main drawbacks presented by the use of centrifugal pumps in this type of installation, in particular if the pump is mounted under load on the cylinder (s) of the engine, for example, is the danger of forming air pockets in the engine. the volute casing surrounding the rotor, these air pockets causing irregular operation of the cooling circuit.
The installation according to the invention com takes a centrifugal pump in which the rotor, the shaft of which is horizontal, is arranged inside a volute casing, and, in order to remedy in a simple manner the drawback cited, it is characterized by the fact that the wall of the volute is pierced with channels, at its upper part and at its lower part, these channels respectively leading into each of the two suction pipes of the pump, in order to prevent the formation of air pockets in the volute.
The drawing shows, by way of example, part of an embodiment of the installation according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a view in axial section of the centrifugal cooling water pump of this embodiment, this pump being mounted under load on the cylinder block of a vehicle engine.
Fig. 2 shows the same pump in elevation view.
In drawing 1 denotes the cylinder block on which is fixed the casing 2 of the pump, comprising the volute 3. The rotor 4 carrying the fins 5 is disposed inside the casing with volute and is fixed on the horizontal shaft 6 which is mounted in a bearing. ball bearing 7. The rotational movement is transmitted to the shaft 6 by means of a lick 8.
The suction pipe 9 of the pump is in communication with the radiator, while the water entering the pump through the second suction pipe 10, comes from the. return pipe 16, 17 of the cooling water coming from the cylinders and is returned directly to the cylinders by the delivery pipe 15 of the pump, this water being mixed with the water having passed through the radiator. In order to prevent the formation of air pockets in the volute 3 of the pump casing, two channels 11 and 12 are drilled in the pa king of the volute, in the vertical plane of the pump, one to the upper part, the other at the lower part of the volute.
The channel 11 connects the upper part of the volute to the suction pipe 10, and the channel 12 connects the lower part of the volute to the suction pipe 9. These two channels allow the evacuation of the air from the volute which, without being, would remain prisoner in the spiral chamber of this volute.
The suction pipe 10 is directed upwards and at its end is fixed a housing 14 into which open a section 16 of pipe coming from the cylinders and a section 17 of pipe going to the radiator. This casing contains a device comprising a shutter member, actuated by a ther mostat 13, and controlling the communication between the return line 16, 17 and the tube 10.
This device is therefore located directly at the end of the pipe 10 and the pipe section 17 is in the extension of the pipe 10 so as to avoid the formation of air pockets. This device regulates the water temperature as indicated above.
