a) <SEP> A190s <SEP> + <SEP> 3C <SEP> + <SEP> AIC13 <SEP> -@ <SEP> 3A1C1 <SEP> + <SEP> 3C0
<tb> b) <SEP> 3AIC1<U>--></U> <SEP> 2A1 <SEP> -f <SEP> A1C13. Es kann aber auch folgende Reaktion in Frage kommen
EMI0001.0008
a) <SEP> Ala0s <SEP> -,- <SEP> 3C0 <SEP> -i- <SEP> A1Cls <SEP> -@ <SEP> 3A1C1+ <SEP> 3C02
<tb> b) <SEP> 3A1C1-> <SEP> 2A1 <SEP> + <SEP> A1C13 Mit Kohlenstoff soll das Verfahren zum Beispiel wie folgt durchgeführt werden:
Process for the production of aluminum. A process has been published according to which an alumina-containing substance and a carbon-containing reducing agent are reacted with an aluminum halide at elevated temperature, whereupon the aluminum-halogen compound thus formed is converted into aluminum by further increasing the temperature aluminum halide used as starting material is decomposed.
The production of aluminum should take place, for example, as follows:
EMI0001.0007
a) <SEP> A190s <SEP> + <SEP> 3C <SEP> + <SEP> AIC13 <SEP> - @ <SEP> 3A1C1 <SEP> + <SEP> 3C0
<tb> b) <SEP> 3AIC1 <U> -> </U> <SEP> 2A1 <SEP> -f <SEP> A1C13. However, the following reaction can also come into question
EMI0001.0008
a) <SEP> Ala0s <SEP> -, - <SEP> 3C0 <SEP> -i- <SEP> A1Cls <SEP> - @ <SEP> 3A1C1 + <SEP> 3C02
<tb> b) <SEP> 3A1C1-> <SEP> 2A1 <SEP> + <SEP> A1C13 With carbon, the process should be carried out as follows, for example:
A stream of aluminum trichloride vapor is passed over a mixture of calcined alumina and lamp soot in the absence of air at a temperature of 450 C. The aluminum-chlorine compound and carbon monoxide that are created in the process are passed into a second room when leaving the reaction chamber, which is heated to 7500 C.
In this second space the aluminum-chlorine compound breaks down into aluminum trichloride and molten, elemental aluminum. The carbon monoxide formed during the reaction is separated from the aluminum trichloride which escapes with it by condensation of the Aicl, and the latter is returned to the process.
Attempts by the applicant have now shown that the process is technically impossible to implement under the specified conditions. is cash.
The invention now relates to a method in which an alumina-containing substance, such as calcined alumina or bauxite, is heated with a carbon-containing reducing agent and a halide, where the halide at a pressure of 30 mm Hg and below and at a Tem temperature of at least 13000 C and the formed,
vaporous aluminum halide compound removed from the reaction mixture and - in contrast to the method described above - decomposed by cooling in aluminum and in the halide used as the starting material.
Not only coke, soot and similar solid substances come into consideration as carbon-containing reducing agents, but also carbon monoxide.
The aluminum halides are particularly suitable as halides, in particular aluminum chloride and aluminum fluoride. If aluminum chloride is used, it is advisable to pass this, as in the first-mentioned process, as steam over the mixture of the alumina-containing substance with the carbon-containing reducing agent, otherwise it would escape from the reaction mixture before it reaches the reaction temperature of at least 13000 C has been brought.
The process offers the great advantage that very pure aluminum can be obtained directly from aluminum raw materials. Appropriately, the raw materials such. B. Bauxite; dry sharply beforehand. In addition, aluminum ores can be used which are out of the question for processing according to the known Bayer process, routes to high silicon or iron content.
The higher the pressure, the higher the temperature will advantageously be chosen. At 30 mm pressure, for example, it is best to go to 1400 to 15000 C or even higher, while at a pressure of less than 20 mm temperatures between 1300 and 14000 C are sufficient. The higher the temperature at the same pressure and the lower the pressure at the same temperature, the higher the reaction rate.
<I> Example: </I> A mixture of calcined alumina and powdered coke was heated in a carbon tube in vacuo to about 14,000 C, whereupon a stream of aluminum chloride vapor was passed over the mixture. The pressure, which was initially only a few millimeters,
rose to about 20 mm Hg at the suction point when the aluminum chloride vapor was passed through. Metallic aluminum precipitated in solid form in a cooled template.
If desired, according to a further embodiment of the invention, the aluminum raw material, e.g. B. the bauxite, a pre-cleaning by subjecting it to reducing agents with hydrogen or carbon-containing Re, at high temperature, eg. B.
at 800 to 10000 C, the oxidic iron compounds are reduced, and that chlorine is then allowed to act on the treated ammonium raw material and the iron chloride formed is removed by volatilization recover, e.g. by heating with air.
