Synchronizing mechanism of two or more coupled internal combustion engines. This invention relates to a synchronizing mechanism. Of two or more motors which are coupled, for example connected to a common drive shaft, as in certain types of propulsion motors used in the navy, the role of this mechanism being to synchronize the operations of these motors and remove the control by independent regulator for each individual motor during normal operation.
According to the invention, this mechanism comprises a member for manual control of bodies influencing the quantity of fuel supplied to each of these engines, so that the quantities of fuel can be changed simultaneously and in equal measure for all. these motors, and in that it further comprises, for each motor, an arrangement actuated by a regulator to prevent one or the other of the motors from increasing its speed above that ordered by the instantaneous position of the manual control device.
An embodiment of the mechanism which is the subject of the invention will be described below, by way of example, in its application to a marine propulsion machine comprising two diesel engines connected to a common gearbox, these engines. driving, through the intermediary of an inverter, a pinion which attacks a main ring gear supported by the shaft carrying the propeller propeller. The accompanying drawing represents this embodiment of the mechanism.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the. part of the mechanism which is mounted on the speed regulator of one of the engines and connected to a fuel supply pump.
Fig. 2 is a view taken from below in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line III-III of FIG. 1.
In the construction shown, there is provided on each engine a limiting cam 1 for the supply of fuel which can affect the shape of an adjustable sector around a pivot 2 mounted on the engine or, as in the example shown , on the housing 3 of the regulator and which has a curved edge 4 of the cam. The adjustment of this cam is exerted by means of levers 5, 8 and: of a bar 6 from the speed control lever 9 which is mounted in the vicinity of the regulator and connected to a manual control member speed, common to both engines.
The bar 6 is in two parts coupled by a threaded rod which can turn therein in either direction to vary the effective length of this bar 6 and which can then be locked in position by means of nuts 10.
A spring 11 is fixed by one end to the lever 8 and by its other end to the housing 3 of the regulator, so as to normally urge the lever 8 in a direction suitable for turning the cam 1 towards the so-called idling position. , and also so as to make up for any dead travel in the maneuvering device.
The angular travel of the lever 8 around its pivot 12 carried by the housing 3 of the regulator is limited by two adjustable stops formed by threaded bolts 13 and 1-1 and mounted on either side of the lever 8 in lugs 15 -and 16 integral with a flange 17 fixed to the housing 3 of the regulator. The edge 4 of the cam 1 is engaged by an adjustable position screw 18 blocked by a countersunk screw 18a and screwed into one of the ends of a lever 19 pivotally mounted on the housing 3 of the regulator.
In a sleeve 19a, one of the ends of which is articulated to the lever 19, is screwed the other of the ends of a rod 20, the other end of which is slidably mounted in a sleeve 21 and bears against one end of a spring 22 housed inside the sleeve 21, which is itself connected to the control bar 23 of a pump 24 (single or multiple) providing the fuel supply.
A threaded sleeve 21a is screwed into a corresponding threaded part of the sleeve 21 and bears against a collar 20a integral with the end of the rod 20, so that by adjusting the position of the threaded sleeve 21a in the sleeve 21, one can vary at will the total length of the assembly constituted by this sleeve 21 and the rod 20. The power of the spring 22 is calculated so that, under normal conditions, the rod 20, the spring 22 and the sleeve 21 form a rigid assembly.
The lever 19 pivots on an axis 25 (fig. 3) which is supported by the housing 3 of the regulator and, inside the latter, the end 26 of the regulator lever is connected to this axis 25, so that the actuation of this lever 26 by the regulator rotates this axis 25. Around the latter is wound a torsion spring 27 fixed by one of its ends in the base of the lever 19 and by its other>. end in a sleeve 28 which, for this reason, tends to follow the lever 19.
The sleeve. 28 is fixed on the axis 25 and comprises a projecting arm 29 which, when this sleeve rotates, bears against the end of an adjustable screw 30 itself screwed into the lever 1.9 immobilized on it in the adjustment position chosen by means of a pin 31. The spring 27 and the sleeve 28 are adjusted so that, under normal operating conditions, the arm 29 is just withdrawn from contact with the screw adjustable 30 carried by lever 19.
In the example shown, the twin parts of the complete mechanism are mounted on the two motors, respectively, each of which also has its own regulator, the levers and bars controlling the cam 1 provided on each being connected to a control member. common manual control, which can be connected to a transmission providing a remote control. In order to synchronize the speed of each of the engines, the screw 18 belonging to each of the parts of the control mechanism of the fuel addition is adjusted, in such a way that.
by means of the rod 20 and the sleeve 21, the position of the fuel inlet control bar 23 is adjusted so that each engine in fact receives the same quantity of fuel and supports the same load when their cams 1 occupy similar positions. It is also possible to modify the shape of this cam 1 to adapt it to different characteristics of the propulsion installation.
In each case, the governor is set to a speed slightly greater than that at which the engine is to be run, as instructed by the position of the manual control member, so that, normally, the arm 29 is slightly away from screw 30.
Thus, under normal conditions, the speeds of the engines are controlled and synchronized by the action exerted on the arrival of fuel by means of members 9, 8, 6, 1, 19 and 22, of which each chain constitutes an organism influencing the quantity of fuel born to one, respectively to the other, of *, two engines.
If, however, the speed of an engine <B> î </B> increases abruptly, the regulator acts <B> '</B> the lever 26 to rotate the arm 29 of the sleeve 28 in order to bring it to the contact of the lever 19 and, on the contrary, to stop the contact between the screw 18 which this lever carries and the fuel supply control cam by reducing or completely cutting off the arrival of fuel provided until then by the. pump 24 to the engine thanks to the intervention of the bar 23 for adjusting the fuel inlet under the action of the rod 20 and the sleeve 21.
Each chain of elements 26, 25, 28, 29, 30 constitutes an arrangement annexed to the body 9-22 mentioned above and activated by the governor when the engine concerned increases its speed above that ordered. by the instantaneous position of the manual control device.
To stop the engine when it is running under any given condition, the sleeve 21 is moved to the right (as shown in Fig. 1) to bring the bar 23 to the stop position. When, on the contrary, the motor is stopped and you want to start it, the sleeve 21 is moved in the opposite direction with a force sufficient to overcome the action of the spring 22, in order (to move it the bar 23 towards the extreme arrival position of the fuel and also: sufficient to overcome the resistance of the torsion spring 27 housed in the sleeve 28.
