Process for the production of a new, yellow azo dye. The present invention relates to a process for the production of a new, yellow azo dye and is. characterized in that chlorine-di- (methylmerea.pto) -4,4'- di - (6-methy lbenzthia.zyl - 2) - azobenzene of the formula:
EMI0001.0010
is heated with dimethyl sulfate to form a tertiary sulfonium salt.
The new dye thus obtained is a brownish-yellow powder which dissolves in water to form a yellow solution. the cotton in light reddish yellow tones with good fastness properties gives washing and cooking with soda dye.
Example: 1.2 parts of chloro-di- (methylmercapto) -4,4'-di- (6-methylbenthiazyl-2) -azobenzo1 (prepared as described below) are mixed with 60 parts of dimethyl sulfate at 120 to 125 ° C. for half an hour heated.
The brown solution that forms is then cooled and poured into 400 parts of acetone. The precipitated ternary sulfonium salt is filtered off and washed with acetone in order to remove the excess dimethyl sulfate. A brownish-yellow powder is formed.
The used chlorine - di - (methylmer- ea.pto) - 4,4'-di - (6 - methylbenzthiazyl-2) -a.zo-benzene (containing 1.3 atoms of chlorine per molecule) is obtained by to 10 parts of the poly disulfide of Chlordimercapto- 4,4 '- di - (6 - methylbenzthiazyl - 2) - azobenzene (containing 1.3 atoms of chlorine per molecule).
which of the formula:
EMI0001.0056
where R is the chloro-4,4'-di- (6-methylbenzthiazyl-2) azobenzene residue, mixed with 100 parts of water, 15 parts of 32% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and 15 parts of sodium sulfide crystals.
This mixture is heated to the boil for half an hour; the solution of the sodium salt of the mercaptan obtained is cooled. Now, while stirring vigorously, 60 parts of methyl iodide are added, whereupon a sticky, brown precipitate forms. The mixture is then heated to 90 ° C. for half an hour, as a result of which the precipitate solidifies.
It is now filtered off. This product is the methyl ester of the aforementioned mercaptan. To clean it, it is made into a paste with ethyl alcohol. Filter in place and wash with additional amounts of ethyl alcohol. Finally, it is washed alkali-free with water and dried. The yield is 12 parts.
The above-mentioned polydisulfide of Chlordimercapto-4,4 '- di - (6 -methylbenzthiazyl-2) -azobenzene is obtained as follows:
16 parts of aluminum chloride and 34 parts of sulfur monochloride (SZC12) are mixed with one another and heated to 90 to 95 ° C. for 36 hours. The reaction mixture is then cooled to 10 to 20 ° C. and 10 parts of 4,4'-di- (6-methylbenzthiazyl-2) -azobenzo.1 are added.
The mixture is stirred for three hours at 20 C and then poured into 500 parts of 10% hydrochloric acid. The resulting precipitate is filtered off, extracted with boiling calcined soda solution and then dried and finally extracted with carbon disulfide and dried.
The term polydisulfide compound is understood to mean a compound which is formed by connecting 2 or more molecules of chloro-4,4'-di- (6-methylbenzthiazyl-2) -azobenzene by means of —SS — bonds are formed.
If 1 part of the dye thus obtained is dissolved in 1500 parts of water at 30 ° C., 50 parts of bleached cotton yarn are introduced into the solution, the temperature is then increased to 60 ° C. and held for 30 minutes, then 0.5 part of calcined soda is added, Dyed for a further 15 minutes at 60 C, the cotton taken out, rinsed with water and dried, so it has a light reddish yellow hue,
the dyeing being distinguished by good fastness properties to washing and boiling with soda. The 'authenticity corresponds to that of dyeings which are obtained with Caledon Yellow G (Color Index No. 1118).
