Si .on :
Thermostatic mixer for liquids, comprising a bimetallic strip. The invention relates to a thermos mixer: static for liquids, fed by two, liquid pipes at different temperature and -comporting a bimetal whose curvature depends on the temperature of the mixture and which controls the proportion. of this mixture by acting on small nozzles associated with diaphragm valves of the two supply conduits.
A thermostatic mixer of the general type above has already been described in French patent No. 722950, of September 16, 1931, by the same inventor. The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of this apparatus from the point of view of the promotion of regulation and operational safety.
The characteristic of the invention consists in that the bimetallic strip acts on the nozzles by causing an obturator to oscillate in front of their orifices inside a fixed drum carrying these nozzles and in that this bimetallic strip is carried by a flexible strip. the position of which is adjusted by pushing a screw adjustment rod secured to an external operating button.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mixer according to the invention, as well as a variant of detail for the construction of the sealing membranes.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section at 90 die the section according to: FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the shutter actuated by the bimetallic strip.
Figs. 4 and 5 show in section a membrane valve, in two different positions @ of the membrane.
The apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 consists essentially of a -corps 1 presenting threaded parts 2, 3 and 4 intended to receive pipe fittings. The body 1 has an orifice provided with a plug 5 (FIG. 2), used for the inspection of. organs located inside the device. Inside the body 1 is mounted a bimetallic strip 6, the temperature of which depends on that of the mixture.
This bimetallic strip 6 is connected to its support 7 by means of a flexible strip 8. A part 9 mounted on the bimetallic strip cooperates with the temperature adjustment device. This assembly presents the possibility of being able to introduce the bimetallic strip 6 and its support into the device through the orifice of the threaded part 2.
The strip 8 forms a return spring, but this strip fixed both to the support 7 and to the bimetallic strip 6 could only play the flexible support rale, while the res-, s.ort -decalling would be constituted by a, organ auxiliary.
The temperature regulator comprises a rod 10 having a threaded portion 11 cooperating with the threaded portion 12 of the body of the apparatus.
The other end of this rod 10: is conical and the position of the lever 13 can be instantly fixed relative to the angular position of the rod 10 without disassembling the device, by loosening the screw 14 and placing the index 15 next to a corresponding number marked on dial 16.
As seen in fig. 2, the rod 10, when it is rotated; acts on part 9 of the bimetallic strip 6 against the action of its return spring and made the necessary adjustment.
A shutter 17, shown on a larger scale in FIG. 3, can oscillate: around a point 18 and -is controlled by the end of the bimetal 6.
This shutter comprises alveoli 19 and 20 which move in front of the orifices of the nozzles. 21 and 22, when the twin blade 6 makes it oscillate: -These movements or vrent or:
close the orifices of nozzles 21 and 22 or else leave them each slightly ajar depending on the temperature of the bimetal in relation to that which is desired to be obtained, set by the lever 13.
The shutter 17 is mounted inside a small drum 23 comprising said nozzles, 21-22, the edges of a slot 24 of the drum 23 (fig. 2); serving as a stopper to limit the stroke in one direction or the other of said shutter 17.
The nozzles 21--22 are associated, respectively, with the membranes 2526 which control the inlets of water at different temperatures. opening or closing the wise arrival steps 29-30; when opening a passage 29-30, the water flows through the side holes 31-32 of the shoulders on which the peripheral part of the membrane is applied in the closed position.
Each of the membranes carries in its center a leakage tube 27-28 intended to create behind the membrane the back pressure necessary for its operation, as explained below. In front of the membranes 25, 26, we have arranged filters 33 -and 34 supporting the guide slide of check valves 35 and 36. It can be seen in particular in FIG. 1 that the valve is open -and the valve 35 closed.
It should be noted that this device is mounted as such. so that it can be easily disassembled and replaced by unscrewing the fittings 37 and 38. Lugs or orientation plates are provided on one of the valves, its cap and the shutter.
It should also be noted that the device com also carries raocords 39 and 40 designed to be welded or threaded at the current pitch, and these connections allow easy disassembly; from the appliance without having to move the supply pipes.
Between the fittings 37 and 38 and the part 41-42 carrying the membranes 25 -et 26, a. seal 43-44 acting in both its own, in particular in the direction parallel to the axis of these fittings and in the radial direction thus ensuring the seal between the parts 37-38 and 41-42 and, on the other hand , between these two parts and the threaded parts 3 and 4 of the body 1.
For this purpose, the -surfaces: parts- 37 38, 41 and 42 in contact with the seal 43-44 are slightly conical (not shown in the drawing). The fittings 37 and 38, when screwed into the threaded parts 3 and 4, crush the gaskets 43-44 by pressing the material of these gaskets in the direction of the axis and by expelling it radially.
To prevent corrosion of the bimetallic strip by prolonged contact with running water, this bimetallic strip can be covered with a layer of protective material, such as varnish, rubber or the like, this protection being added to the usual electrolytic protection. .
The operation of the device is as follows. When the temperature of the mixed water increases or decreases, the bimetallic strip causes the shutter to oscillate. If we :
suppose that the mixed water is -too hot, the displacement of the shutter will be in the direction q @ ii provo that the -decrease in the flow through that of the nozzles 21-22 which is associated with the ar hot water rivet -and the .contrepres, sion thus created behind the membrane of the hot water inlet causes the closure of this membrane, while the other membrane,
released from the backpressure by opening the corresponding adjustment, on the contrary, it allows the arrival of cold water. As soon as the flow of cold water has lowered the temperature of the bimetallic strip below the desired temperature, the reverse watering of this bimetallic strip closes the cold water inlet and opens the water inlet. hot. This succession of oscillations maintains the temperature of the mixed water at a constant value.
The membrane 25-26 actuated by the counterpressure of the flow which it controls may include a central part constituted by a rigid disc 46 and an extensible annular part.
The membrane can advantageously be made as follows. The body of the membrane consists of natural rubber or synthetic or a similar body armed or not with a canvas. In the center is incorporated a rigid metal disc, and outside are two or more carefully prepared folds so as to allow the. membrane to deform very easily in one direction, while it will resist the pressure of the liquid taking place in the other direction.
Such a realization has been shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, which show the membrane 51 comprising the closure wall 52, the internal disc 53, the external wall 54, the closing ply 55, the opening ply 56, the gi cleur 57 (similar to the tubes 27-28 ), the spring 58. We can still see the valve 59 which includes the inlet-pipe 60, the seat 61, the grid 62, the edge 68, the cap 64, the closing ring 65 and the orifice 66 ( analogous to ports 21-22).
The operation of the membrane is as follows: In fig. 4, the orifice 66 is closed, the liquid arriving through the duct 60 passes through the nozzle 57 and presses with the same pressure "on the one hand. On the central part of the wall 52 corresponding to the seat 61 and, on the other , on the surface of the wall 54 corresponding to the disc 53. The diameter of the disc being greater than that of the seat, the membrane is pushed on the seat all the more as the pressure increases and it closes the passage of the liquid.
Apart from the surface of the say that, the. flexible part of the membrane comprising the folds 55 and 56 is pressed on the grid 62, the pressure tending to tighten the folds. The height of these gives them sufficient rigidity to allow the grid to support the membrane without the latter deforming in a substantial way.
In fig. 5, which shows the membrane in the open position, port 66 has been opened. Therefore, the liquid passing through the nozzle 57 cannot remain under pressure under the cap 64 and the water pressure, which acts on the surface of the seat 61, lifts the membrane and allows the water to flow out of the valve. way indicated by the arrows.
The figure also shows how the membrane deforms in its annular part, the ply 55 closing and the ply 56 opening.
The spring 58 has no other purpose than to avoid deformation of the membrane when the valve is not in use. The layers 52-54 of flexible material arranged on either side of the rigid disc may be of unequal thickness, a thicker layer being better suited to cooperate with the seat 61.
The closure wall of this membrane could have a particular shape, such as frustoconical or semi-spherical, and its mounting method could be different, the membrane being able to be clamped, for example, between the valve and the cap by bolts while other way.
