Universal key. The present invention relates to a so-called "universal" wrench of the type comprising a fixed jaw and a movable jaw, this wrench is intended for the operation of nuts, as well as of tubes.
The key object of the invention differs from keys of this type known in that the movable jaw is integral with an arm articulated on a slide which can move in an adjustable manner inside a tubular arm for the jaw. fixed, said articulated arm being subjected to the action of a spring which tends to keep it inside the tubular arm, open over part of its length to allow angular displacement of said articulated arm.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the key which is the subject of the invention.
In this drawing, fig. 1 is a longitudinal view thereof, the tube carrying the fixed jaw being cut out in order to show the movable members. Figs. 2 to 4 are sections of fig. 1, respectively by A-E, C-D and E-F.
As shown in fig. 1, a fixed jaw 1 is integral with an arm 2 consisting of a rectangular tube having on one of its short sides an opening 3, over a certain length from the jaw 1. An arm 4: integral with 'a movable jaw 5, is housed inside the tube 2 and can pivot through the opening 3 about an axis 6. The latter is fixed in the fork-shaped end of a slider 7 capable of to move inside the tube 2.
At its other end, this slide 7 which, at rest, is located in the extension of the arm 4, is extended by a threaded rod 8 on which is mounted a knurled ring 9 for mant nut (fig. 1 and 4) and making projection on the long sides of the tube 2 through windows 10 provided in this tube.
A spring 11 fixed to the arm 2 and pressing against the arm 4, maintains the latter normally in place inside the tubular arm 2.
It is understood that by acting on this nut 9, the jaw 5 will quickly be brought into the opening position required by the part to be clamped, while the clamping of this part will be obtained by a rotation in. opposite direction of this nut.
If it is a question of rotating a tube, following the diameter of the latter, the axis of the arm 2 will, for example, make an angle of a degrees with the axis of the arm 4, capable of pivoting around the 'axis 6; under these conditions, a force X exerted in the direction of arrow Y will result in a force perpendicular to the axis of the tube to be actuated equal to
EMI0001.0022
this effort will prevent the key from slipping, while ensuring the rotation of the tight tube. Compared to known universal wrenches, this key still has the advantage of eliminating any pressure from the hand for tightening.
In addition, the clamping carried out on a tube is sufficiently energetic so that it makes it possible to eliminate the teeth usually provided on the working faces of the jaws; this avoids possible damage to the tube to be actuated.
