Process for the production of tetrahydric pumic acid. A technically applicable process for the production of tetrahydrobrenzic acid does not yet exist. This acid has so far only been represented in the laboratory by hydrogenation of pyrocucic acid in the presence of colloidal palladium.
Although it is known that it is formed in small quantities in the production of glutaric acid by treating tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol with alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides at a higher temperature, the yield is so low that this acid can be obtained on an industrial scale by means of this reaction out of the question.
In contrast, it has now been found that tetrahydrobrenzic acid can be produced in a simple manner on a technical scale if. tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is heated to temperatures above 220 under pressure with dilute aqueous, alkaline solutions in the presence of dehydrogenation catalysts,
When carrying out the process according to the invention, the tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, which is easily obtainable by hydrogenation of furfural, is in the pressure vessel, for example, with dilute aqueous solutions of alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides. a mixture of such heated to Tem temperatures above 220.
Sodium or potassium hydroxide are used as alkali hydroxides, and barium or calcium hydroxide as alkaline earth hydroxides for the process. When using alkali hydroxides, it is advisable to work with 20 to 40% solutions.
The dehydrogenation catalysts used in carrying out the process according to the invention are, for example, a copper catalyst prepared according to Raney, a catalyst prepared by reducing copper formate in a hydrogen stream at 200, a copper-nickel catalyst prepared according to Raney with 35% Cu or the like.
The tetrahydrobrenzic acid, which can be obtained in good yield, is a valuable intermediate product for the manufacture of plasticizers in the paint and plastics industries.
Example: 153 g of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (hydroxyl number 555) are gradually heated to 300 in an autoclave with a solution containing 68 g of caustic soda in 200 g of water and 10 g of a copper catalyst while stirring . Strong elimination of hydrogen begins at 240. The hydrogen is blown off at an overpressure of 55 atmospheres. After a reaction time of two hours, the evolution of hydrogen has ended.
The reaction mixture is dissolved in water with heating and the unsaponifiable components are removed by continuous extraction with ether. Yield 5.4 g (= 3.5; ö of the alcohol used).
Then the solution is made Congo acidic and the tetrahydrobrenzic acid is extracted with ether in a perforator. He holds 119.3 g of tetrahydrobrenzic acid with a boiling point at 15 mm pressure of 130-133, that is 71 ö of the theory of alcohol consumed.
