Ellipsenzirkel.

StreckeH g = (b-a) = konstant.
Elliptical compass. There are different constructions of elliptical circles known, which are constructed accordingly to the various definitions of the ellipse.
The elliptical compass according to the present invention is based on a new principle and is characterized by a first axis, a rotatable arm about a second axis on which a drawing tool is arranged adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the arm and by moving between the first axis and the arm - transmission transmission means, which are formed in such a way,
that by rotating the second axis about the first axis by any angle, a rotating movement of the arm about the second axis in the opposite sense by twice the angle is brought about.
The movement transmission means are expediently designed as gears, with a fixed gear on the first axis and a further gear on the second axis, which is coupled to the first via at least one intermediate gear and the gears have a gear ratio of 1: 2 .
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 2 serves to explain the mode of operation, and Figs. 1 and 3 to 6 show exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention.
If, as shown in Fig. 1, the lever D with the fulcrum in the first axis Z of the toothed A (stationary wheel), which is at rest in relation to the drawing base, is rotated clockwise, for example, the toothed wheel C rotates, which is only half as large ( Diameter) as the stationary wheel A has, as a result of the interposition of a change wheel B counterclockwise at twice the angular speed. Each point P lying on an arm E extending from the gearwheel C writes an ellipse.
Fig. 2 serves to prove that the point labeled P is an ellipse point. According to Fig. 2: x = b.sinp y = a.cosg9

With reference to the same Fig. 2, the following applies: Angle HPK - 90, according to construction. Segment H g = (b-a) = constant.
The point of the ellipse therefore always lies on the Thales circle established over the line H K.
Conclusion Turning the lever D around the angle p) corresponds to turning the lever E through the angle (2 9p) in the opposite direction of rotation. Thus the point P on lever E describes an ellipse.
In the embodiment of Fig. 3, Z again denotes the standard A tra lowing axis. C ,. is the second axis about which the arm E can rotate. In the longitudinal direction of the arm E, a drawing tool P can be moved and locked. Gears A and C are coupled via an intermediate gear B and A has twice the diameter of C.
While in Fig. 1 the axes of the wheels A, B and C are mounted in a rigid lever D, in the example of Fig. 3, a lever D consisting of two articulated and lockable parts is provided, so that for the purpose of change the dimensions of the ellipse, the distance between the axes Z and Cl is adjustable. If the lever D is rotated about the axis Z in a direction of rotation, the writing instrument P describes an ellipse analogously, as shown for Fig. 1.
By shifting the writing device along the arm E and adjusting the distance Z-C., An ellipse of predetermined semi-axes can be drawn who the.
The embodiment of Fig. 4 differs from that of Fig. 3 in that the two parts of the lever D forming a knee joint are of equal length, which allows the axis C ,. with the Z axis to coincide, whereby ellipses of very small eccentricity and in the borderline case a circle can be drawn. If the writing implement P is also displaced in the coincident axes C,., Z, a point is created as a borderline case.
An intermediate wheel F mounted in the central axis of the knee joint interacts with stationary wheel A, and a gear wheel G, which transfers the rolling movement to wheel C, sits on the same axis. The wheel C has half the diameter of the wheel G, while the wheels A and F have the same diameter.
Instead of using cogwheels as motion transmission organs between stationary wheel and wheel C, a toothed rack could also be used, as shown in Fig. 5. A is again the standard wheel and C is the wheel C carrying arm E with writing tool P and half the diameter of A. The axles of the two wheels are mounted in a telescopic carrier H in order to change their distance . I is a rack with which both wheels are engaged.
If the carrier H is rotated about the axis Z of the stationary gear A, the rack rolls on its circumference, while the wheel C rotates in the opposite direction.
Fig. 6 also shows how pulleys K, L, 137 and ropes N can be used for the transmission of motion.
