Les .axes. 2 de ces roues 1, l' sont, à cet effet, fixés directe- ment à l'extrémité des bras 6, 6' devant les porter. Pour assujettir ces bras 6, 6' soit en position arrière, soit .en position conjuguée avant, on a prévu, sur ces derniers, des oreilles 18, 18' qui se présentent .devant les ferrures 20, 20', solidaires -du bâti @du véhicule;
Two-wheeled vehicle convertible into a single-wheeled vehicle. The present invention relates to a vehicle comprising two wheels arranged laterally convertible into a vehicle having only one wheel, which is placed in front of the chassis, in the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the latter.
This vehicle is characterized by the fact that the rolling axes of the two wheels are carried by the ends of the arms, which are articulated, by their opposite ends, around axes, substantially vertical, which belong to the frame of the vehicle and which can be placed so that the two wheels are arranged parallel to the rear relative to the pivot axes of these arms; these and only one of the wheels can also, by angular displacements around the pivot axes, be carried to the front of the vehicle, so that the arms then combine to carry the two ends of the axis of single wheel bearing; locking members making it possible to join the wheel-carrying arms to the body of the vehicle in each of the positions of use that these arms can occupy.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, some embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a vehicle established in accordance with the invention, the solid line indicates the positions of the members when the two wheels are arranged parallel and the mixed line the arrangements of these same members when the vehicle is not more carried than by a single wheel. These remarks also apply to the figures showing other construction variants.

Fig. 14 shows a detail concerning the mounting of a spacer.
In what follows, the reference marked with the sign 'designates the component symmetrical to that bearing the same reference; the reference to which is appended a letter designates another position occupied by the organ that ca characterizes said reference.
The arrangement shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 consists of two arms 6, 6 'which, by one of their ends, are respectively articulated on pivot axes 7, 7', integral with the vehicle frame. Each of these arms 6, 6 'carries, at its other end, one of the wheels 1, the of the vehicle. For this purpose, each arm 6, 6 'is secured, by a bolt 8, 8', with a fork 3, 3 'which straddles the corresponding wheel 1, the and whose branches receive the corresponding ends of the axis 2, 2 'of said wheels 1, l'.
The two arms 6, 6 'can be arranged so that the two wheels 1, 1' have their parallel running planes, as shown by the solid line in FIGS. 1 and 2 (the two wheels 1, the being arranged under the body of the frame of the vehicle, behind the pivot pins 7, 7 '). These two arms 6, 6 'can also be moved angularly forwards (mixed line in fig. 1 and 2). To do this, one of the wheels 1 is removed and the remaining one 1'a will be carried by the conjugate arms 6a and 6'a which are each fixed to one of the branches of the fork 3'a which carries the wheel 1'a. Locking members are provided to secure the arms 6, 6 'wheel carriers in one or other of their positions.
Thus, for example, on the body of the vehicle are pivoted, at 10, 10 ', by one of their ends, flat bars 9, 9'; the opposite ends of the latter having notches which are capable of being engaged on bolts 11, 11 'carried by the forks 3, 3' of the wheels 1, 1 '. This arrangement locks the wheel carrier arms 6, 6 ′ in their rear position. In addition, the internal branch of each fork 3, 3 'is secured to the frame 5 of the vehicle by a bolt 4, 4'. The wheel-carrier fork 3 'has a fitting 14', which is combined, in a single wheel position, with a corresponding fitting 15, carried by the frame of the vehicle. A connecting member (such as a pin 13 passing through the fittings 14, 15) makes it possible to hold in position the arms 6, 6 'and the wheel which the latter support.
Under these conditions, to switch from the two-wheel arrangement to the single-wheel arrangement, it is necessary: - with regard to wheel 1, remove the bolts 8 and 4 which respectively join the fork 3 to the arm 6 and to the vehicle frame , release the bar 9 from its bolt 11. In this way, the assembly of the fork 3 and the wheel 1 can be separated from the arm 6.
- as regards wheel 1 ', remove bolt 4' and release bar 9 'from its bolt 11'. One then rotates, on the one hand, the arm 6, which remained alone after the removal of the fork 3 and of the wheel 1 (as indicated above), on the other hand, the whole of the arm 6 ', of the fork 3 'and of the wheel 1', so as to bring these members into the front position with respect to the vehicle. The arm 6 (position 6a) is then fixed to the side of the wheel carrier fork using the bolt 8a. 0n sets up the pin 13 to unite the mating fittings 14'a and 15.
The vehicle became single front wheel In the. construction variant fig. 4, the, binding; between the forks 3, 3 'wheel carrier and the frame of the vehicle is made by means of pins 17, 17' which replace the bolts. 4, 4 'of the arrangement in fig. 1, 2 and 3. These pins 17, 17 'pass through - legs 20, 21 and 20', belonging to each of the forks 3, 3 ', as well as: legs 18, 19 and 18', 19 'depending & fittings secured to the vehicle body.
In addition, in this construction variant, on the one hand, the forks 3, 3 'are established in two parts. removable, which facilitates the fitting of the corresponding wheels, on the other hand, the wheels 1, spin on spindles 16, 16 ', which are fixed between the branches of the forks 3, 3' that they brace.
In the assembly fig. 5, the wheel axle pivots in bearings 92-2â which, for the convenience of assembly, are bolted to the: forks: 3, 3 '; the latter may be provided .de open mortises 12 facilitating the assembly and disassembly of the wheels 1, the.
In the construction variant fig. 6 and 7, the arms 6, 6 'end in forks at their ends opposite to those which are pivoted on the axes 7, 7'. On the other hand, the branches of the forks 3, 3 'wheel-carrier are provided with a fitting 25, 25', which -est substantially perpendicular to them and which has square returns 26, 27 at each of its ends.
This fitting 25, 25 'can be constituted by an angle iron. An axis 24 passes through both the latter, the corresponding fork of the arm 6 or 6 'and a tab belonging to the branch of the fork 3 or 3', in order to achieve the connection between the arms 6, 6 ' and the assembly: fork 3, 3 'and wheel 1, the.
The returns 26, 27 of the angles 25 directed towards the frame of the vehicle are drilled to allow -d'introduce a rod 28 which also passes through the pendant fittings 29 and 30, integral with said frame. This arrangement makes it possible to immobilize the arms 6, 6 'in the positions where the wheels 1, 1' are placed parallel to them.
To switch from the two-wheel arrangement to that with a single wheel, it is necessary: - with regard to wheel 1, to remove the locking rod 28, as well as of axle 24. It is thus possible to separate the fork 3 from the vehicle. and the corresponding wheel 1. _ as regards the wheel l ', remove the locking rod 28', then angularly move the arm 6 'until it comes to occupy the position 6'a, which brings the wheel l 'to the front center position.
The arm 6 is moved angularly, which has been separated from its fork and. (The, its .wheel. With the aid of the axis 24a, the arm 6a is joined together with the angle iron 25a and the leg that has the corresponding branch of the fork of said wheel. Then, the spindle 13 is put in place which joins the ferrules 13, 14'a, which immobilizes, in this p if not before, the fork of the wheel l 'a, as well as its two support arms 6a, 6'a.
In the variant of .construction fig. 8, we have substituted for each single fork of the wheels 1, l ', two forks: 3, 3 which are joined by their tops to carry the corresponding ends of the axis of the wheel 1, l' and which diverge symmetrically by overlapping the latter.
These forks 3, 3 are braced by the angles 25, indicated -in the previous arrangement in fig. 6 and 7.
0'n will notice that the bracket 14'a, instead of being secured to the fork 3 '(fig. 6, 7 and 8), could be fixed at the end (closest to the frame) -of the angle 25 ', integral with the fork 3'.
These devices could be doubled by providing a fitting 14'a on each of the angles 25, 25 'and: two corresponding fittings 15, 15' on the body of the vehicle.
In the construction variant fig. 9, the embodiment @de the invention has been simplified by removing the forks 3, 3 'which straddle the wheels 1, the.
The axes. 2 of these wheels 1, l 'are, for this purpose, fixed directly to the end of the arms 6, 6' which are to be carried. In order to secure these arms 6, 6 'either in the rear position or in the combined front position, there are provided, on the latter, ears 18, 18' which appear in front of the fittings 20, 20 ', integral with the frame. @of the vehicle;
the connection taking place by means of pins 17, 17 'which pass through the ears 18, 18' as well as the fittings 20; 20 '. In the front position, the free end of the axle 16'a of the wheel engages the hole in the arm 6a (released from the wheel 1 and from the axle 2 which will have been removed by unscrewing the nut which fixed it to this arm) but, as the arm 6a is movable by angular displacement around the pivot axis 7,
it is necessary that the hole carried by the arm 6a has a larger diameter than that of the corresponding part of the axis 16'a which it is to receive. To ensure the locking of these two members., Despite this play, it is advisable to resort to an arrangement such as that shown in FIG. 10. This arrangement provides, in combination with the locking nut which screws onto the threaded end of the axle 16'a of the wheel, a frustoconical centering member 31'a which engages in the opening, of larger diameter, which the corresponding arm 6a has, in order to understand the existing play.
In the construction variant of fig. 11 and 12, the arrangements of FIGS. 6 and 7 while retaining, for each wheel 1, 1 ', only one branch 3, 3' of the fork as well as the corresponding angle 25, 25 '. The fork branch 3, 3 'carries the spindle 16, 16' of the wheel 1, 1 'and it -is provided, on its inner face, with two legs 32, 32'.
With these tabs 32, 32 'are combined the corresponding carrying arms 6, 6', which are doubled or which can be made in the form of a fork; the part common to the branches 6 or 6 'of each fork articulated at 7 and 7' on the frame of the vehicle, while the ends of the branches are united by means of articulation bolts 33, 33 'to the legs 32, 32 'branches 3' 3 'wheel carriers. To go to the front position, the removal of the rod 28 'releases the wheel 1' which is brought into a. By unscrewing the nut which it carries (fig. 11), then removing the rod 28 (fig. 12), the arm 6 is released which, after angular displacement, cooperates in maintaining the single wheel before l 'at.
For this, the end of the axis 16'a is housed in the hole -de .la branch 3a and is held there by its nut (fig. 13).
In order to maintain the parallelism of the wheels 1, 1 'when the latter are in their rear position, their forks 3, 3' can be brought together by means of a spacer 34 (FIG. 11). The latter can pass through a console 35, integral with the frame of the vehicle; two thrust washers 36, secured to the spacer 34, frame this console 35 to limit transverse movements.
In order to facilitate the installation, the spacer 34 can be engaged laterally in the branches 3, 3 'of the wheels 1, the and in the. console 35 of the building by means of open mortises provided for this purpose (fig. 14). The spacer 34 can be applied (in the rear position) to all the arrangements described above.
