Selon le procédé faisant l'objet de l'in vention, on prépare une résine formo-phéno- lique par condensation d'un phénol avec de la formaldéhyde en milieu alcalin et en pré sence d'un catalyseur constitué par un sel d'acide organique ayant au moins une fonc tion hydroxylique, puis on mélange la résine ainsi obtenue, de préférence en présence de solvants organiques, avec un produit rési neux résultant du traitement acide de combi naisons cycliques polymérisables;
C'est ainsi, notamment, que ce vernis peut être utilisé avantageusement pour rem placer, dans un grand nombre de cas, les procédés de protection du fer ou d'autres métaux par étamage, galvanisation ou autre métallisation. Entre autres applications de ce genre, il peut. servir à la constitution d'en duits protecteurs pour les parois intérieures et extérieures de boîtes à conserve en fer ou d'emballages métalliques destinés à renfer mer des produits chimiques;
Process for preparing a varnish based on softened formo-phenolic resin. A subject of the present invention is the preparation of a varnish based on formophenolic resin having in particular remarkable properties of flexibility, adhesion and stability with regard to physical and chemical agents. In particular, this varnish makes it possible to obtain, by application to a support, a film capable of being susceptible to deformation produced by impacts or by variations in temperature, without flaking and while exhibiting great hardness.
Such properties make it possible to use the ver nis according to the invention as a coating product, both effective and durable, to protect metallic or other objects against the destructive or corrosive action of atmospheric agents or of chemical agents to which they. are exposed.
According to the process which is the subject of the invention, a formo-phenolic resin is prepared by condensation of a phenol with formaldehyde in an alkaline medium and in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an acid salt. organic having at least one hydroxylic function, then the resin thus obtained is mixed, preferably in the presence of organic solvents, with a resinous product resulting from the acid treatment of polymerizable cyclic combinations;
which is found in the fractions of coal tar distilling between 160 and 185 C, this mixture being made in the proportion of 75 to <B> 500 </B> by weight of formo-phenolic resin for 25 to 50-% of the second resinous product.
A mixture is thus obtained which, after having been optionally diluted by means of organic solvents suitable for the use of the varnish envisaged, results, by a subsequent condensation, in a plastic mass having the aforementioned properties.
In practice, this condensation will take place on the actual object to be coated, after application of the mixture to this object.
Except as regards the presence of an organic acid salt acting as a catalyst, which constitutes one of the characteristics of the invention, the preparation of the formo-phenolic resin in an alkaline medium can be carried out by the usual methods. The alkaline medium will preferably consist of a volatile alkali, such as ammonia for example, or of an organic amine such as ethylene diamine.
The salts of organic acids having at least one hydroxyl function, capable of being used as catalysts in this reaction, are in particular. salts of citric, tartaric, malic and lactic acids.
As an example of cyclic, polymerizable combinations distilling between 160 and 18'5 C, the resinous polymerization derivatives of which can be used to mix them with the formo-phenolic resin, it is appropriate to mention in particular coumarone (C $ HI, 0 ) and indene (C ,, Hg). We know. that these substances give, by acid treatment, resinous products, the constitution of which is not well determined, but which is characterized in particular by their resistance to acids and alkalis. Such products are now well known in the industry and their preparation does not need to be specially described.
Before mixing, the formo-phenolic resin and the second resinous product can be dissolved respectively in solvents suitable for each of them, these solvents furthermore being chosen such that they are miscible with one another. As solvents for the. formo-phenolic resin, it is possible to use, for example, ethyl alcohol, acetone, or. a mixture of one of these with butanol. As the solvent for the second resinous product, an aromatic hydrocarbon, such as benzene, can be used.
It has been found that the condensation of the two resins can only take place if these products are mixed in a ratio comprised between well-defined limits. The proportion of formo-phenolic resin entering in the constitution of the mixture must be, as already said, between 75 and 50% by weight, and the proportion of the second resinous product between 25 and 50%. As has been said above, the condensation of the two resinous products thus mixed is generally carried out on the support. coated with this mixture.
This reaction takes place under the action of heating to a temperature which can vary from 180 to 450 ° C., extended for a period which can vary, depending on the thickness of the layer, the dimensions of the coated object. and the chosen temperature, from a few minutes to two hours.
The plaster. obtained after this treatment. is insoluble in usual organic solvents. As indicated above, the flexibility, adhesion and stability, physical and chemical properties of the coatings prepared with the varnish according to the invention make it particularly suitable for being used as a coating product to protect metallic or other objects against the destructive or corrosive action of atmospheric agents or chemical agents to which they are exposed.
Thus, in particular, this varnish can be used advantageously to replace, in a large number of cases, the processes for protecting iron or other metals by tinning, galvanizing or other metallization. Among other applications of this kind, it can. to be used in the constitution of protective products for the interior and exterior walls of iron cans or metal packaging intended to contain chemicals;
for parts exposed to bad weather and difficult to access - therefore requiring a resistant and long lasting coating usually obtained by galvanization as is the case, for example, for certain pylon elements in electric current transmission lines ; for metal parts or objects used in the spinning or dyeing industries and subjected to the action of chemical agents.
The varnish according to the invention can also be used as a coating product for objects made of magnesium or of magnesium alloys instead of the chemical etching which is used for the protection of these objects.
Here is a non-limiting example of implementation of the invention: 3 g of tartaric acid are dissolved in 7 g of water and the solution obtained is mixed with 50 g of 20% ammonia and 200 g of 40% formaldehyde .
On the other hand, 250 g of phenol are melted in a glass flask and the above preparation is added thereto. The whole is mixed and the flask, fitted with an ascending refrigerant, is placed in an oil bath heated to 130-140 ° C.
The reaction begins quite violently. The products of this reaction gradually separate into two layers. When this preparation is complete, the upper layer is decanted, then the resin thus collected is dehydrated in vacuo, and is diluted in a mixture of 125 g of acetone and 125 g of butanol.
This resin solution is finally mixed with a solution of 90 g of coumarone resin (melting point 80-81 C, obtained by acid treatment of coumarone) in 250 g of pure benzene. A ready-to-use varnish is thus obtained. The applioation of this worm is preferably carried out by immersion or with a gun. The fi nal condensation is carried out by steaming under the temperature and duration conditions indicated above.
