Das Ingangsetzen der Entladung oder die "Zündung" der Röhre richtet sich bei einer gegebenen "Vorwärts"-Spannung nach denn Gitterpotential mit Bezug auf die Ka ihode. Nenn sie einmal in Gang gesetzt ist, hört die Entladung durch die Röhre nur auf, wenn der Anoden - Kathodenstrom infolge iiui3erer LTnistiinde auf Null sinkt;
Die elektrischen Werte der Vorrichtung nach Fig. 2 dürften aus folgenden Beispielen ersichtlich sein, bei denen die nachstehenden Werte durchgehend verwendet worden sind: Frequenz der Wechselstromquelle: 60 Perio den pro Sehlinde; Grösse des Transformators 10: 15 kVA mit 2\20 Volt Primärspannung und 440 Volt: Sekundärspannung, wobei die Se kundärwicklung einen Widerstand von un gefähr 0,08 Ohne besitzt; Leitungswiderstand im Ladekreis: annähernd 0,065 Ohm;

Die Lade- und Entladetätigkeit des Kon- densators 25 in einer solchen Installation wie der in Fig. 2 gezeigten und mit Verwendung der obenerwähnten Werte ist photo-oszillo- graphisch erforscht worden und wies fol gende Daten für die verwendeten, nachste hend angegebenen Werte der Schaltungsele mente und der Stromwerte auf: Kapazität des Kondensators 25: - 140 Mikrofarad; die regulierbare Drosselspule 34: annähernd 1000 Mikrohenry; Widerstand derselben: an nähernd 0,22 Ohm; die regulierbare Drossel spule 41: annähernd 830 Mikrohenry;
Wider stand derselben: annähernd 0,19 Ohm; Pri märstrom des Transformators 10: annähernd 45 Ampere. Gleichstrom aus der Quelle 65: annähernd 9,5 Ampere.
Die oszillographisch festgestellten Werte sind: Höchstwert des Ladestromes des Kon- densators 25: ungefähr 63 Ampere; zwischen dem Start des Ladestromes und dessen Höchstwert verflossene Zeit: annähernd 450 Mikrosekunden;
In der in Fig. 4 gezeigten Ausführungs form ist die Primärwicklung 100 des Trans formators 101 mittels der Leiter 102 an eine einphasige. Wechselstromquelle angeschlossen. Die Primärwicklung kann dadurch, dass sie mit mehreren Abzapfungen 103 versehen ist, justiert werden. Die Sekundärwicklung des Transformators ist nicht geteilt, wie in Fig. 1 und 2 angegeben, ihre Aussenenden sind viel mehr mittels der Leiter 105 und 106 an die Kathoden 107 und 108 von zwei mit Gas gefüllten, gittergesteuerten Entladungsröh ren<B>1.09</B> und 110 angeschlossen, deren Gitter 111 und 112 zusammen mit den Kathoden 1.07 und 108 mittels der Leiter 113 bezw. 114 an besondere Zündregulierkreise angeschlos sen sind, die eine geeignete Zündregelung hervorbringen;
method and device for arc welding. The present invention relates to a method for arc welding and to the device for carrying out this method. .
One has electric arc welding, in which an electric arc is maintained between an electrode made of metal or carbon and the workpieces, while a relative movement is generated between the arc and the workpieces in the longitudinal direction of the welds, in the industry in large order to generate a continuous welding used. The previously proposed arc is, however, subject to changes, especially in terms of its directional properties and its intensity, which leads to significant shortcomings when the welding process in question is used to combine pieces of relatively thin sheet metal or a thin and a thick piece of metal.
The defects that occur here include: cavities, burns, variations in the melting intensity, breaking of the weld seam, which leads to leaks, depressions, etc .; all of these defects considerably degrade the strength, density and flexibility of the welds obtained.
The present invention aims to exclude the above-mentioned disadvantages to a large extent, in order to offer the possibility of using the weld for joining together thin pieces of metal and at the same time to improve the strength, density and ductility of the welds in thin or thick material.
According to the inventive method, electrical energy is stored intermittently in a storage circuit and released intermittently by a working circuit, with the working circuit being kept isolated from the storage circuit during storage and vice versa, so that the arc discharge through the gaseous medium in the space between the welding electrode and the metal parts that are joined together have at least the discharge component resulting from this released energy, which consists of a series of intermittent, rectified, regularly repeating discharge pulses.
Through this process with its impulsive. This means that a concentrated and short-term supply of welding energy can be achieved so that the workpieces are melted at the connection point only on a relatively small area and return to their normal state, without bringing the heat with them unnecessarily and without leaving the atmosphere of the environment and the electrode to absorb impurities such as oxides, nitrides, carbides, etc., which are completely or partially dissolved in the metal as a result of penetration of the weld seam, so that their presence counteracts the subsequent recrystallization of the weld area and cavities and other defects occur,
which generally lead to a mechanical softness of the connec tion.
In the accompanying drawing, four embodiments of the device according to the invention are shown; It shows: FIG. 1 schematically a device for welding with utilization of an intermittent rectified capacitor discharge.
Fig.? the second embodiment of the device for welding using an intermittent, rectified capacitor discharge with a superimposed discharge component originating from an incandescent voltage, FIG. 3 shows a third embodiment of the device and FIG. 4 shows a last embodiment for utilizing the two halves of each AC wave.
The device shown in Fig. 1 has a transformer 10, the primary winding of which through the conductors 11 and 1? is connected to an AC power source. The secondary winding of the transformer 10 is divided into two parts 13 and 14, which are connected at <B> 15 </B> to an adjustable current switching device that has a long service life, although it is exposed to relatively strong current and in repetitive manner and faster follow the current in the conductors <B> 15 </B> must close and interrupt at predetermined moments.
Such, now accessible, practical devices are the ignition-regulated or grid-controlled, mercury vapor or gas-filled arc discharge devices, either with a mercury pole electrode, such as the mercury rectifier, the ignitron tubes, or with an indirectly or directly mentioned cathode, such as the thyrotube , are provided.
Any of these controlled arc discharge devices can be successfully used to produce the regulated current interruption in conductors 15 in the scheme shown.
The switching device 16 shown in FIG. 1 is a gas-filled, grid-controlled arc tube. Such tubes have their own rectifying conductivity, i.e. the direction of the discharge current through. the same, with the so-called "forward" voltage, between anode and cathode, is always turned from the anode to the cathode. A voltage of opposite polarity does not cause a current, provided that the voltage mentioned does not exceed the reverse voltage of the grid-controlled tube in question.
The initiation of the discharge or the "ignition" of the tube depends on the grid potential with respect to the electrode for a given "forward" voltage. Once it has been started, the discharge through the tube only stops when the anode-cathode current falls to zero as a result of external pressure;
the grid voltage is ineffective during discharge, even if the grid influence is changed to a value that is sufficient to prevent re-ignition. As can be seen from Fig. 1, the grid-controlled discharge rectifier 16 is provided with an anode 17, a control grid 18 and a cathode 19, wherein the cathode is expediently kept at an elevated temperature, which is necessary for correct electron emission, namely a filament 20 is used, which receives energy from a suitable source (not shown here) through the lines 21.
The grid 18 and the cathode 19 are connected by means of lines 22 to an ignition control circuit of suitable properties and construction, which should, however, preferably be of the mechanical, known type, which comprises a contactor which is driven by a synchronous motor from the same AC power source like the transformer 10 current he receives.
The mechanical ignition regulating device (not shown in the drawing) is equipped with a brush or brushes which engage in the contactor mentioned and are connected in a suitable manner to the rectifier 16, the positions of the contactor and the brushes precisely determining the time in advance , in which the potential between the grid 18 and the cathode 19 is changed in order to initiate the ignition and thus cause the tube 16 to start up.
The opposite ends of the secondary windings 13, 14 are respectively by means of conductors 23. 24 connected to a capacitor 25 with sufficiently large capacitance. The plate 26 of the capacitor is given relative to its plate 27 positive potential. A second, gas-filled, grid-controlled discharge tube 28 of the same size as the tube 16 is connected to the conductor 23. The anode 29 of the tube 28 is connected to the conductor 23 and its control grid 30 and the cathode 31 are connected to a regulating element by means of conductor 32), preferably to an element of the aforementioned mechanical, synchronously driven ignition distributor type.
The cathode 31 of the tube 28 is indirectly heated.
The cathode 31 of the grid-controlled rectifier 28 is ver connected by a conductor 33 with an adjustable choke coil 34, which in turn is connected by a conductor 35 to a welding electrode 36 which is attached just above the metal pieces 37 and 38 which are to be welded together, however, a gap of 1.5 mm or more is left between the electrode and the workpieces. The latter rest on a metal work table 39 to which they are attached; the mentioned table is ver slidable in the longitudinal direction of the welding joint on rollers 81 and 82.
The table 39 is connected to the plate 27 of the capacitor 25 and to the secondary winding 14 through a Lei ter 40, a second adjustable choke coil 41, a conductor 42 and the conductor 24.
For the purpose of selective regulation of the capacitance of the capacitor 25 in order to adapt it to each special welding operation, it is advisable to divide the capacitor into smaller, parallel-coupled units. For the same reason, it is also advantageous to have a device for regulating the secondary voltage of the transformer 10. Such a device is formed by the taps 43 on the primary winding of the transformer.
With regard to the secondary voltage of the transformer 10, it should be emphasized that the higher the voltage, the smaller the capacitance required for the capacitor 25 for a specific welding operation, since the energy stored in a capacitor is proportional to the square of the voltage between the plates. With regard to safety and economy (lower costs for the capacitors and tubes) as well as constructional difficulties with regard to the rectifier, it is advisable to keep the maximum value of the secondary voltage of the transformer 10 below approximately 2000 volts.
If such a rule is followed, and if an air space of 1.5 mm or more is constantly maintained between the electrode and the work piece during the welding operation, which requires a potential difference of about 4500 volts or more to bridge it, it is evident that the energy stored in the charged capacitor cannot be discharged without tools in such an air space that reduces the electrical resistance of the air space by generating an ionization within the air space mentioned and thereby enables discharge.
Such an aid can be of the following nature: radiation (X-rays or ultraviolet rays, etc.), electrical (high-voltage, low-voltage energy, alternating current spark discharge with low or high frequency, or a spark discharge of a rectified character or, after the arc is formed, an always flowing sender current with low voltage) or thermo-chemical (flames, formed by burning various substances).
The preferred means for ionizing the air space between the welding electrode 36 and the workpieces 37, 38 is of an electrical nature, namely a high-voltage - low-current spark discharge with rectified current from a power distribution network of normal frequency, with an auxiliary circuit for ionizing the air space is shunted to the previously described circuit. As can be seen from Fig. 1, the auxiliary circuit is seen with a secondary coil 44 of In duktionsspultyp with an open core ver; the conductors 45 and 46 of this secondary coil 44 are BEZW on the conductors 35 and 40 to the electrode. connected to the work table.
One end of the primary coil is by means of a conductor 48 to the directly or directly heated cathode 49 of a half. Wave rectifier tube 50 connected, the anode 51 of which is connected by a conductor 52 to an output terminal of an induction regulator 53. The other end of the primary coil 47 is connected by a conductor 54 to the anode 55 in a gas-filled grid controlled rectifier tube 56 of similar type to tubes 16 and 28, but smaller. The grid 57 and cathode 58 of the tube 56 are connected by Lei ter 59 to an ignition regulating circuit which contains a regulating element.
To the cathode 58 of the tube 56, a capacitor 61 for low voltage is connected by a conductor 60, the negative plate 63 of which is connected to the conductor 60, which is connected by a conductor 64 to the second output terminal of the induction regulator 53. The induction regulator receives energy from an alternating current source which has a frequency which is identical to that of the power source of the transformer 10.
The use of an aid for ionizing the gaseous medium in the space between the electrode 36 and the workpiece 37, 38 in order to increase the conductivity of the medium is required if the maximum value used for the secondary voltage of the transformer 10 and thus the maximum value up to which the capacitor 25 can be charged, is kept below 2000 volts ge.
If desired, however, the maximum value of the secondary voltage can be increased to such a value that the highest possible voltage of the capacitor 25 exceeds the critical potential of the air space - especially if the air space is made smaller than the preferred length of 1.5 mm - so that the condenser is discharged through the air space without auxiliary ionization of the gaseous medium of the air space.
The elements in the loading respectively. The discharge circuit of the circuit described above, that is to say the inductance, the capacitance and the resistance, can expediently be regulated in order to be able to bring them into agreement with the conditions prevailing for a particular installation and a particular workpiece.
Different thicknesses and different properties of the metals to be welded therefore require discharges of different intensities, and this in turn makes it necessary to regulate both the inductance and the capacitance of the circuit and the power supply to the primary winding of the transformer 10. The frequency of the alternating current that is fed to the transformer 10 also determines in advance the maximum speed of the relative movement between the electrode and the workpiece, since the successive discharges should not be too far apart or so close to one another that they are too much overlap and cause burns or perforation of the metal.
As mentioned above, both the inductances 34 and 41 and the capacitance 25 can be regulated. In accordance with this, the transformer 10 can also be regulated by the presence of several taps 43 on the primary winding or in some other way, for example a car transformer can be introduced into the primary circuit.
So that the grid of the tubes 16 and 28 regain their control ability as quickly as possible after each ignition, both the charging current and the discharging current of the capacitor 25 should consist of the first half-wave of a damped oscillation. This is achieved by making the resistance of the charging and discharging circuits as low as possible to meet the condition
EMI0005.0003
to meet, where R, the ohmic resistance, L the inductivity and C the capacity of the circuit concerned.
During operation, the alternating current supplied to the primary winding of the transformer generates a voltage that changes in the same way in the secondary windings 13, 14 of the transformer. Every second half-wave of the voltage coincides with the direction of the “forward” voltage between the anode 17 and the cathode 19 of the tube 16. Due to the influence of such a voltage change, which can be called the "positive" half-period, the conductor 28 is positive in relation to the conductor 24, and the capacitor 25 is charged to the desired potential as soon as the grid 18 in the regulating circuit 22 is influenced so that the tube 16 ignites.
During the loading of the capacitor 25, the grid 30 in the regulating circuit 32 blocks the tube 28 so that the welding electrode 36 is electrically separated from the capacitor 25.
The tube 16 is ignited at a predetermined moment during the positive half-cycle of the secondary voltage of the transformer 10 in order to close the circuit between the secondary windings 13, 14 and the plates of the capacitor 25, so that the path of the charging current of the capacitor is completed becomes. The moment of ignition of this tube 16 should be carefully selected, namely it should occur after the pause that follows after the previous discharge of the capacitor 25 has ended, in order to overlap the previous discharge and the now starting charge of the capacitor prevent.
By appropriately changing the instant of ignition of the tube 16 so that it occurs either when the secondary voltage of the transformer rises and preferably in the vicinity of its maximum value or when the voltage mentioned drops, the charge of the capacitor can be regulated in such a way that End potential receives the desired value, from the maximum value of the secondary voltage down to just a few volts.
While the capacitor 25 is being charged, the Niederspannungskon capacitor 61 is also charged in the described auxiliary circuit by means of the induction regulator 53 and the half-wave rectifier tube 50, the induction regulator 53 being appropriately regulated so that the ignition pulses and the welding pulses arrive at the same time or very close to one another . During the charging period of the capacitor 61, the grid 57 blocks the current passage through the tube 56, so that no voltage is induced in the secondary coil 44.
After completion of the charging of the capacitor 25, which, depending on the values of the elements of the charging circuit and the choice of the instant of ignition of the tube with respect to the beginning of the "positive" half cycle of the secondary voltage change, has a duration of less than one thousand to a few thousand microseconds , the charging current through the tube 16 has just completed its first or positive half cycle due to its damped oscillatory character and falls to zero.
At this moment, the grid 18 in the tube 16 gets its control effect back and prevents their re-ignition and electrically opens the previously closed circuit between tween the secondary windings 13. 14. The tube 28 is now ignited in a pre-determined instant to which the Regulation circuit 32, which includes the grid 30, is set. This moment is carefully chosen in order to insert a pause between the end of the charging of the capacitor 25 and the start of the discharge.
At the moment of ignition of the tube 28, the circuit between the positively charged plate 27 is completed by the choke coil 34 and the conductor 35 to the welding electrode 36, while the negatively charged plate 27 is completed by the lines 24 and 42, the choke coil 41 and the line 40 has a permanent electrical connection with the work table 39.
When the tube 28 is ignited, a potential difference is thus generated between the welding electrode 36 and the workpieces 37, 38 attached to your work table; this potential difference is almost equal to the difference that exists between the capacitor plates 26, 27. In general, this potential difference is in itself insufficient, as previously mentioned, to bridge the air space between the electrode and the workpieces, and a discharge of the capacitor 25 through the air space mentioned would therefore be rather unsafe without the supply of a superimposed high-voltage ignition pulse from same polarity, obtained via the conductors 45, 46 from the auxiliary circuit described.
The tube 56 in the auxiliary circuit is ignited by the circle 59 approximately at the moment of ignition of the tube 28, so that the low-voltage capacitor 61 is discharged through the primary coil 47, whereby a voltage is induced in the secondary coil 44 which within a very short time ( Approximately 200 to 300 microseconds) reaches a fairly high peak (approximately 5000 volts or more). With regard to its polarity, the secondary coil 44 is connected to the conductors 45 and 46 in such a way that the direction of the voltage induced in the coil 44 coincides with that of the voltage of the charged capacitor 25 on the welding electrode.
The high voltage pulse generated in the secondary coil 44, the alternative branch circuit of which goes through 34, 33, 28, 23, 13, 16, 14, 24, 42, 41 and 40 and from the grid controlled tubes 28 and 16, with regard to which forward voltage the mentioned high voltage pulse has the opposite direction, and is effectively blocked by the damping effect on the part of the inductors 34, 13, 14 and 41, the air space between this and the workpieces 37, 38 on the work table 39 is fed through the conductor 35 and the welding electrode, which latter also with the secondary coil 44 through the conductor 46 is in conductive connection.
As a result, a spark is obtained through the air space which intensifies the ionization therein, which causes a path for the discharge of the capacitor 25 by a considerable reduction in the equivalent ohmic resistance of the air space. The duration of this discharge is comparatively short and the discharge is consequently comparatively intense, however, due to the action of the adjustable choke coils 34 and 41, it is not of such a character that it causes the intensely heated, molten metal to splash at the welding point .
After a suitable pause after the discharge by the electrode 36, during which the grid 30 in the tube 28 regains its controllability and so the capacitor 25 from the discharge branch 33, 34, 35, 36, 39, 40, 41 and 42 electrically separates, the grid 18 of the tube 16 is influenced so that the tube 16 ignites again and that the course described is repeated. During the successive discharges of the electrode 26, the work table 39 is moved in relation to the electrode in the longitudinal direction of the welds.
The speed of movement of the workpiece is selected with regard to the frequency of the alternating current supplied to the transformer 10 in order to achieve the correct partial overlap of the series of welding points resulting from the discharge with continuous welding seams.
The embodiment of the device according to FIG. 2 is recommended when it is a matter of supplying a larger amount of energy to the weld and at the same time regulating the penetration more smoothly.
In this embodiment, a carefully adjusted discharge component, which is fed from a direct current source, is superimposed on the intermittent, rectified discharge pulses obtained by the same means as in the device according to FIG. A direct current source, for example a generator or an alternating current rectifier, is shown here schematically and denoted by 65.
Your positive conductor 66 is connected via an adjustable resistor 67 to the anode 68 in a half-wave rectifier tube 69, for example of the Tyrakon type, which can be passed during a fraction of a second by a relatively strong current of several hundred amperes, with the reverse voltage to the Example is 5000 volts. The cathode 70 of the tube is connected by means of a conductor 71 to the conductor 35 between the adjustable choke coil 34 and the welding electrode 36. The negative conductor 72 of the direct current source 65 is connected to the conductor 49 between the adjustable choke coil 41 and the work table 39.
During the operation of the device according to FIG. 2, the direct current source 65 generates a rectified potential difference between the welding electrode 36 and the workpieces 37, 38; This potential difference has the same direction as the voltage that arises between the conductors 35 and 40 during the intermittent, rectified discharge of the capacitor 25. However, since the aforementioned intermittent voltage is opposite in relation to the rectifier tube 69, no current can flow through the shunt arm containing the direct current source 65.
The mentioned, rectified potential difference between the parts 36 and 37, 38 causes with each discharge pulse in the capacitor system a DC flow from the source 65, through the conductor 66, the adjustable resistor 67, the rectifier tube 69, the conductors 71 and 35 and to Electrode 36, through the air space, which is strongly ionized at this moment, the workpieces 37, 38, the work table 39 and the lines 40 and 72 back to the source 65. Depending on the degree of ionization of the air space, this direct current can be from the source 65, even if with reduced intensity, also during the pause between two successive discharges from the capacitor system, continue to flow.
If desired, however, the mentioned further flow can be prevented by setting the resistor 67 to a suitable value or by using suitable means for limiting the gas ionization, for example cooling the electrode tip, or by using a combination of both measures.
Since the potential maintained between the conductors 35 and 40 by the direct current source 65 has a direction which is opposite to the direction of the anode voltage of the tubes 28 and 16, from the mentioned side through the from the parts 34, 33 , 28, 23, 13, 16, 14, 24, 42 and 41 existing branch no direct current flow.
However, there is a small direct current of a few milliamperes that flows from the direct current source 65 through the turns of the secondary coil 44 with high resistance, which coil 44 is connected to the conductors 35 and 40 by means of the output conductors 45 and 46 of the auxiliary device . This insignificant DC loss is of no consequence, but if desired it can be easily avoided by placing a properly inserted rectifier tube in either conductor 45 or conductor 46, as follows in connection with the explanation of those shown in FIG Device is described, but in the Fig. is not shown.
The discharge from the direct current source through the air space between the welding electrode 36 and the workpieces 37, 38 is superimposed on the discharge component with the intermittent rectified discharge pulses of the capacitor? 5 through the same air space, where a resulting discharge of unusual smoothness for the regulation of their intensity and thus of a high degree of adaptability with regard to the metal material to be welded and its thickness.
While each intermittent discharge pulse gives the workpiece 37, 38 a so-to-speak compact, relatively intense burst of energy, which is of a nature comparable to a hammer blow and in a relatively small place brings about a melt in a relatively short time that is too short so that impurities could form in or on the weld, the discharge component originating from the direct current source continues to give off energy to the workpiece, which increases the penetration effect and preheats the weld.
The electrical values of the device according to FIG. 2 should be evident from the following examples, in which the following values have been used throughout: Frequency of the alternating current source: 60 periods per Sehlinde; Size of transformer 10: 15 kVA with 2 \ 20 volts primary voltage and 440 volts: secondary voltage, with the secondary winding having a resistance of about 0.08 without; Line resistance in the charging circuit: approximately 0.065 Ohm;

The charging and discharging activity of the capacitor 25 in such an installation as that shown in FIG. 2 and using the above-mentioned values has been researched photo-oscillographically and has the following data for the values of the circuit element used, given below ments and the current values on: capacitance of capacitor 25: - 140 microfarads; the adjustable reactor 34: approximately 1000 microhenries; Resistance thereof: at approximately 0.22 ohms; the adjustable choke coil 41: approximately 830 microhenries;

The oscillographically determined values are: maximum value of the charging current of capacitor 25: approximately 63 amperes; elapsed time between the start of the charging current and its maximum value: approximately 450 microseconds;
Total duration of the charging current of the capacitor 25: approximately 1800 microseconds; the maximum value of the discharge current of the capacitor 25, which represents the intermittent pulses in the resulting discharge between the welding electrode and the workpiece: approximately 171 amperes; the maximum value of the cathode current density of the intermittent impulses: about 68 amps per square millimeter, i.e. about 6800 amperes per square centimeter (the discharge area was determined by measuring the focal spot produced by a single current discharge in a polished area); time elapsed between the start of the discharge of capacitor 25 and its maximum value: approximately 700 microseconds:
Total duration of the discharge of the capacitor 25: approximately 1580 microseconds; the maximum value of the discharge from the DC power supply between the electrode and the workpiece: approximately 17 amperes; the maximum value of the cathode current density of the last-mentioned discharge: approximately 6.4 amperes per square millimeter or 640 amperes; the maximum value of the cathode current density of the resulting discharge between the electrode and the workpiece: approximately 74.4 amps per square millimeter, i.e. 7440 per square centimeter.
The above data gives a clear picture of the unloading mechanism and, although it relates to a particular installation and setting thereof, it clearly shows the features of the present process.
The most striking fact is the very high cathode current density that is reached during the discharge and the very short time that follows, during which the resulting discharge actually affects the melting of the workpiece. The cathode current density has a maximum value that is two or more times as large as any value previously used when using identical electrodes and when welding the same material.
The next important feature of the process described is that it is very short; Time during which the resulting discharge actually affects the melting of the workpiece. Although the total duration of the resulting discharge can have a value of 1500 microseconds or possibly a slightly longer value, practically speaking a third or more (depending on the thermal characteristics of the workpiece) of this rather short period of time for preheating the welding point and partial annealing of the material after welding is used, so that the actual melting at the welding point only takes place for approximately 1000 microseconds or for a shorter time.
This very small fraction of a second is not sufficient for the formation of a significant amount of a harmful compound such as oxides, nitrides, etc., and for the contamination of the mass or the surface of the melted points. The melting together of the points mentioned is therefore not inhibited by any surface skin made of foreign matter worth mentioning, and this is achieved without using a protective flux, and the result is a weld whose surface and its mass, practically speaking, <I> completely </ I > is free from the harmful compounds mentioned above. This also makes it possible to use this method to weld such a difficult-to-weld metal as aluminum.
Intermittent discharge pulses are therefore preferably used with a cathode current density of at least 3000 amperes per square centimeter and a duration of 200 to 5000 microseconds.
Another characteristic feature of the method described is the rather steep front of the discharge between the welding electrode and the workpiece, namely the rapid rise and the subsequent relatively slow decrease in the discharge current. Much shorter time is required for the discharge current to reach its maximum value than for it to go down from the mentioned maximum value to zero.
The combination of the relatively high voltage that is present between the electrode and the workpiece during the discharge and to a large extent accelerates the electrons in their collision activity in the plasma region of the discharge, the steep discharge front, the high current density and the very short duration of the entire phenomenon an effect that is related to striking the weld with a hammer, so that the density of the welds is considerably increased, and that in cases where a magnetic blowing effect wants to occur, the effect of this bubble phenomenon on the discharge, even if not completely canceled, so yet is greatly reduced.
In certain cases it is desirable to provide the discharge circuit with means for avoiding so-called "inductive kickbacks" caused by the accumulated and distributed inductance in the mentioned circuit. In the embodiments of FIGS. 1 and 2, the inductors 34 and 41 and the distributed inductance in the best existing circles from the parts 23, 28, 33, 35, 36, 37 and 38, 39, 40, 42 and 24 seek it To charge the capacitor 25 to a potential which is opposite to the potential prevailing during the charge by means of the transformer 10, and a device for preventing such an opposite charge may be desirable.
Fig. 3 shows an embodiment which is just provided with a device. to prevent "inductive kickback". In the case of a rectifier tube 73 of the arc discharge type, which can be passed by a relatively large current at a relatively low "forward" voltage, the anode 74 is connected to the conductor 42 by a conductor 75. and cathode 76 is connected to conductor 33 by conductor 77.
When the discharge of the capacitor 25 takes place, the current supply from this source through the tube 73 is blocked because the potential difference between the conductors 32 and 42, which has arisen as a result of the discharge of the capacitor 25, is opposite in relation to the tube 73 . For the same reason, neither the discharge of the high voltage auxiliary circuit nor the voltage maintained between the conductors 35 and 40 by means of the direct current source 65 can cause a current through the tube 73.
Any tendency of the inductance in the discharge circuit to give the capacitor an opposite charge as a result of a rapid decrease in the magnetic field contained therein is, however, effectively prevented, since the tube 73 serves as a branch line for current. which results from the voltages generated in the collected inductances 34 and 41 as well as in the distributed inductances in the existing circle consisting of parts 33, 35, 36, 37 and a part of 42.
The mode of operation of the welding device shown in FIG. 3 is essentially the same as that of the device shown in FIG. 2, which should be clearly evident when comparing the two schemes. In the embodiments shown in Fig. 1, 2 and 3, only every half-wave of the alternating current is used to produce the intermittent, rectified Entladungsim pulses. But one can also provide an embodiment in which every half cycle of the alternating current is used, so that the number of discharges per second is doubled.
This can be desirable when dealing with metal pieces with different properties and of different thicknesses, or to increase the speed of the relative movement between the electrode and the workpiece in view of the greater number of discharges per unit of time. Such a circuit, which is shown in Fig. 4, can generally be referred to as consisting of two interconnected circuits which are of the type described in connection with Figs. 1 and 2, but contain a suitable means for a mutual To prevent influencing of the two circuit halves, while the relevant half-periods of the alternating current are exploited.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the primary winding 100 of the transformer 101 is connected to a single-phase by means of the conductor 102. AC power source connected. The primary winding can be adjusted in that it is provided with several taps 103. The secondary winding of the transformer is not divided, as indicated in Fig. 1 and 2, its outer ends are much more by means of the conductors 105 and 106 to the cathodes 107 and 108 of two gas-filled, grid-controlled discharge tubes <B> 1.09 </ B > and 110 connected, the grids 111 and 112 together with the cathodes 1.07 and 108 respectively by means of the conductors 113. 114 are ruled out to special ignition control circuits that produce suitable ignition control;
for example, synchronously ge driven contactors that are equipped with brushes, as has been described for the device of FIG. The anodes 115 and 116 in the tubes 109 and 110 are connected to the negative plates 119 and 120 of two capacitors 121 and 122 by means of the conductors 117 and 118.
The conductors 105 and 106 are respectively by means of Lei ter 123. 124 is connected to gas-filled, grid-controlled discharge tubes 125 and 126, both of which have the same function as the tube 16 described in FIG. The aforementioned tubes 125 and 12F> are connected by means of conductors 127 and 128 to the positive plates 129 and 130 of the capacitors 121 and 122. The conductor 127 is connected by means of a conductor 131 to a gas-filled, grid-controlled discharge tube 132, and the conductor 128 is connected in a similar way by means of a conductor 133 to a gas-filled, grid-controlled discharge tube 134, the function of the Tubes 132, 134 correspond to the function of the tube 28 in FIG.
The cathode of the tube 132 is connected by means of the variable choke coil 135 to the conductor 136, which is connected to the welding electrode 138 by means of the Lei age 137, and the cathode of the tube 134 is connected by means of the variable choke coil 139 to the conductor 140, the is also connected to conductor 137.
This conductor 137 is also connected to a direct current source, for example to a generator or an alternating current rectifier. 141 is a rectifier whose positive terminal is connected by a conductor 142 and a variable resistor 143 to the anode in a half-wave rectifier tube 144 of discharge type, for example of the same type as the tube 69 (Fig. 2). The cathode of the tube 144 is connected to the conductor 137 by means of a conductor 145, the rectifier tube 144 here acting like a rectifying valve, as does the tube 69 in the device according to FIG.
The nega tive terminal of the direct current source 141 is connected by the conductor 146 to a conductor 147, which is verbun at its one end to the workpieces 149 and 150 supporting table 148 and at its other end to a variable inductor 151 which is connected to a Head 152 is ruled out, which in turn is closed to the conductor 118.
With the conductors 137 and 147, two low-energy high-voltage auxiliary circuits are connected for the purpose of ionizing the gaseous medium in the space between the electrode and the workpieces. The conductor 137 is connected by means of a conductor 153 to the secondary coil 154 in an induction coil with an open core, the opposite end of the secondary coil 154 being connected by means of a conductor 155 to a half-wave rectifier tube 156 with a relatively high reverse voltage. The anode of the tube 156 is connected by a conductor 157 to the conductor 147 which is connected to the work table.
A conductor 158 is also connected to the conductor 153 and extends as far as a secondary coil 159 in a second induction coil with an open core and of the same type as the induction coil 154. The secondary coil 159 is connected at one end to a half-wave rectifier tube 160, the anode of which is connected to the conductor 157 by a conductor 161.
Each of the secondary coils 154 and 150 is connected to a special old element for inducing the relatively high voltage contained therein, and since the two circles are identical, it should suffice to describe one of the two circles. The same transfers are used in both circles.
With each of the secondary coils, a primary coil 162 works, one end of which is connected by means of a conductor 163 to the cathode in a small half-wave rectifier tube 164, as well as the positive plate in a capacitor 165 with a relatively low voltage value. The tube 164 is of the gas-filled type and can be passed by a relatively strong current at a relatively low "forward" voltage.
The other end of the primary coil 162 is connected by means of a conductor 166 to the anode in a gas-filled, grid-controlled discharge tube 167 j, the grid and cathode of which are connected by means of the conductor 168 to an ignition regulating circuit. The cathode of the tube 167 is connected to the negative plate of the capacitor 165 by means of a conductor 169.
The anode of the tube 164 and the conductor 169 are respectively by means of the conductor 170. 171 connected to the output terminals of an induction regulator 172. The induction regulators of the two primary circuits are set so that they alternately charge the respective Niederspannungskon capacitors 165, so that each regulator evaluates a corresponding half cycle of the alternating current; Or in other words the induction regulators are set to be 180 electrical degrees out of phase with one another.
With regard to the operation of the device, it should suffice to briefly point out here that the first half of each change through the secondary winding 104, the direction of which corresponds to the direction of the voltage vector of the forward voltage of the tubes 126 and 109, will charge the capacitor 121 when tubes 126 and 109 are ignited.
It is obvious that the discharge through the tubes 126 and 109 must take place at the same time, and therefore the same must be ignited at the same time by means of the above-mentioned ignition regulator; thus, when tubes 126 and 109 have ignited, the circuit is made from secondary winding 104 through tube 126, conductor 128, capacitor 121, conductors 118 and 117, tube 109 and conductor 105, and the other end the secondary winding 104 completed.
During the second half cycle, the secondary winding generates a forward voltage with respect to tubes 125 and 110, and the other capacitor 122 is charged if tubes 125 and 110 have ignited simultaneously, the circuit then being composed as follows: Conductors 105 and 123 , tube 125, conductor 127, capacitor 122, conductors 118 and 117, tube 110, and conductor 106 to secondary winding 104.
After the ignition of the tube 134 at the correct time, as explained in connection with the description of FIG. 1, with the tubes 1.26 and 109 not igniting, the capacitor is charged by the working circuit that controls the tube 134, the variable inductor 139, the conductors 140 and 137, the welding electrode 138, the workpieces 149, 150, the work table 148, the conductor 147, the variable choke coil 151 and the conductors 152 and 118 > includes. The tube 134 is ignited in accordance with the explanations relating to FIG. 1, that is, after a suitable break between the loading and unloading activity.
If, in accordance with this, the tube 132 has ignited, with the tube 125 conducting no current, the capacitor l22 is made up of the parts 127, 131, 132, 135, 136, 137, 138, 149 and 150, 148, 147, 151 , 152 and 118 existing working group discharged.
As in the embodiment of FIG. 2, the direct current source 141 maintains a direct voltage between the welding electrode 138 and the workpieces 149 and 150 through the rectifying valve 144, which leads to a corresponding discharge component through the air space, with the other component being - The discharge from the capacitors 121 and 122 - takes place simultaneously with the air space ionization by means of the high-voltage auxiliary circuit.
In the examples shown in the drawings, the gas-filled, grid-controlled discharge tubes and half-wave rectifier tubes with indirect BEZW. Provided directly heated cathode, which is to be preferred with the tubes available at the moment, but the invention is not limited to tubes with cathode heated in this way. Synchronously driven contactors have been specified for ignition control, but devices other than the mechanical arrangement mentioned can also be used. Grid-controlled discharge tubes of the grid type thyratron tubes, preferably gas-filled, have been specified as circuit breakers The tubes that are currently most common and that have the right properties.
However, other types of controllable electron or arc discharge devices can also be used, for example the so-called Jonvalves, which in principle proceed from American patent No. 1850967, or some other more or less mechanical types, for example switches, which open to is based on the principles specified in American patent specifications No. <B> 1851 </B> 704, <B> 1819 </B> 633, <B> 1930 </B> 933 and 2 <B> 051708 </B> are. The welding can be carried out without the use of flux, although flux could also be used if desired.
