Immaine skin dye mixture and method of preparing the mixture.
The present invention comprises a dye mixture for human skin and a process for the preparation thereof. The latter has coloring or dyeing properties for human skin; it can be presented in solid, liquid or pasty form; it is in particular intended to color or tint the lips. So it can be a stick n
lipstick for example, or a
paste, a liquid for coloring or tinting the lips.
By "coloring" is meant here the simple deposit on the skin of a more or less adherent layer of coloring matter, whereas
by "teilnture" we mean the penetration and
fixation in the skin of a dye; in this
last case, we get a so-called tincture,
delible ".Lerm, mixcolorant" used in this description applies
as well to mixtures acting by colora
tion than to those acting by dyeing.
The coloring mixture which is the subject of this
The invention is characterized in that it is constituted at least in part by tetra lnihydrofurfuryl alcohol and by at least one halogenated resin flux of which at least a part is found dissolved in this alcohol.
As regards solid or pasty products, for example for lip sticks, it is known that the currently known coloring mixtures usually contain several ingredients, namely: animal, vegetable or mineral oils and waxes, binding agents such as, for example, lanolin, colora. nts, lacquers and perfumes, etc.
Their manufacture can be described as follows:
Here is a. example of ingredients included in their composition:
Beeswax 15 parts by weight
Ozooerite 5
Spermacéti 5 "" "
Lanol, ine 10 "" "
Vaseline 15 "" "
Castor oil 48 "" "
Tetrabromo-fluorescein 2 "" "
The first five ingredients are whisked together and armored to facilitate their mutual dissolution.
The tetrabromo-fluo rescein is dispersed separately in castor oil and a sufficient amount of the mixture of the above ingredients. This dispersion is added to this dispersion to form a soft paste at room temperature. The paste is then passed through a roller mill or pulper. The rest of the mixture of ingredients is then added, the whole being. reheats and brews until completely blended. Perfume and / or other special purpose ingredients may also be added to the mass which will be cast in suitable molds.
The pouring temperature is approximately 65 ° C, that is, approximately 10 10 C above the solidification temperature of the lipstick stick. Everything must be continuously stirred until the moment of pouring. After cooling below the solidification point, the sticks can be demolded.
Castor oil has been found to be useful in the manufacture of lip sticks, thanks to its particular properties. It is used as a dispersion medium for dyes and has proved to be the most suitable oil for making lip sticks. It is considered to be a good solvent for halogenated fluorescers; it is also miscible with animal and vegetable oils as well as with. the true esters type.
Despite its widespread use in the manufacture of lip sticks, castor oil does, however, have certain disadvantages.
It is only partially miscible with mineral oils and other hydrocarbons, which excludes the use of all these materials, except in relatively small quantities.
In addition, lipsticks containing heather oil and balogenated fluorescein have always had some tendency to have circulated. In addition. the dissolving power of castor oil against f. Halogenated luoresceins is in fact very low, i.e. on the order of about 0.5%. The disadvantages of this limited dissolving power for the manufacture of lip sticks. will reassort from the following.
It has been found that a stick, lip of better quality than the saddle of concretes currently manufactured can be obtained by replacing in these djernieM a part of the castor oil by icooltethydfro-furfuryl alcohol. The compatibility of the mixture of castor oil and tetrahydrofuryl alcohol with mineral oils and other hydrocarbons is quite satisfactory.
It has further been found that it is even possible to completely eliminate castor oil as an ingredient in lipsticks by employing tetrahydrofuryl alcohol, optionally with some other solvents. Examples of such solvents. are: lauryl lactate, ethylene glycol mono ricinoleate, propylene glycol mono lurate, glycerin monoricinolate, "cyclonol", as well as ethyl tartrate and ethyl citrate.
A very important advantage of the use of tetrahydrofuryl alcohol is its high dissolving power with respect to dyes of the halogenated fluorescent class. While 1/2 part by weight is the upper limit of solubility of tetra-bromo-fluoresein da.
ns 100 parts of castor oil, at least 28 parts by weight of this colorant dissolves in 100 parts of tetrahydro-furfuryl alcohol. The great solubility of the dye in the alcoholté'trahydrofurylic allows the manufacture of lipsticks giving a very intense colora.tio'n.on application to the skin. Ceei is probably due to the fact that the dye is in solution, which state. It is the most effective from the point of view of tinctorial power.
When castor oil alone is used, it contains in solution only 0.5% dye, as indicated above Undissolved dye (for example if the amount of dye present in castor oil is 4%, 3% of the dye is in the undissolved state) does not have the same tinctorial power.
The dyeing power of lipsticks containing tetrahydrofuryl alcohol makes it possible to considerably reduce certain irritations arising from the use of lipsticks containing halogenated fluorceins.
This comes from. so that for united coloring, of equal intensity, it fa. and less coloTajift with italian alcohol than without it. Another factor contributing to the marked decrease in irritation when tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is used is that the decolourant solution in this alcohol is less irritating than preparations which contain it in suspension or in the solid state.
We can also mention as noticeable the fact that the speed of tinting the lips is much greater with lip sticks containing tetrahydrofuryl alcohol than with those not containing it. We can explain this phenomenon in a non-restrictive way, by admitting. that the entirely dissolved dye finds defeat in its form, more active from the dye point of view.
The process for preparing the product which is the subject of the invention is characterized by the onformeummélangeconstitué at least in part by a halogenatedfluorescein and tetrahydro-furfuryl alcohol, in such a way that one part of this fluo resoéinesoitdissoutedamscetalcool.
It is thus possible to obtain either a liquid formed from a solution of the dye in tetrahydrofuryl alcohol, and which can be used for the .. temtua'e of the lips, or, by using for the formation of the mixture further. other ingredients than those mentioned, a solid or pasty product.
The liquid, constituted by the solution, has the advantage of being kept indefinitely without requiring any agitation before use.
Until now, it has been necessary either to use freshly prepared colorant dispersions or to agitate these dispersions before use. The solid-form mixture can, for the manufacture of lip sticks, be simply heated, until it is required to stir it. Conta.nual once liquefied.
The results obtained by the present invention were not predictable. The high dissolving power of tetrahydrofuryl alcohol vis-a-vis halogenated fluoresceins was unexpected. This fact can easily be demonstrated by referring to the data from the bleau. Below. This last indicates the limited solubility in% by weight of tÚtrabromo-fluorescÚin in various liquids.

Halogenated fluorescins are products which can be obtained by. r reaction of a phthalic acid halogÚnÚ with resorcinol and can be characterized as dioxy- fluoranes halogÚnÚs.
Examples of fluo resoéi'neshalogë'n & esusablesda.ns the mela. nge according to the invention are: 4, 5-dibromofluoralne-3, 6-diol; 2, 4, 5, 7-tetrabromo-12, 13, 14, 15-tÚtrachloro-fluoran-3,6-diol; 4,5-dichloro-fluoraji.e-3,6-d, iol; 2, 4, 5, 7-tetrabromo-fluoran-3, 6-diol (tetrabromo-fluorescein). Mention may also be made of iodinated or fluorinated fluoresoeins. Obviously, when desired, lacquers or color modifiers can be used.
Moderate amounts of the different ingredients used may vary. laughing within rela limits. tivememt large.
For a lipstick stick, for example, the amount of halogenated fluorescein can vary from 0.01 to 5% of the total weight of the stick, although amounts of 0.5 to 2% are usually used. Castor oil can be up to 50%.
When solvents other than tetrahydrofuryl alcohol are also used, their amount may be of the same order of magnitude. Tetrahydrofuryl alcohol may be used in amounts of up to 25%, for example. Suitable amounts of the above mentioned substances are 0.5 to 2% halogenated fluorescein, 15 to 35% castor oil or solvents other than said alcohol and 5 to 20% tetrahydrofuryl alcohol.
Here is, by way of example, the composition and the method of preparation of a coloring mixture according to the invention:
Beeswax 15 parts by weight

SpermacÚti 5 ä ä ä
Lanolin 10 ä ä ä Vaseline 15
Dye solution 50 "" "
The dye solution contains by weight 75 parts of castor oil, 25 parts of tetrahydro-furfuryl alcohol and 4 parts of tetra bromo-fluorescein. All the ingredients are heated while stirring, at a temperature sufficient to melt the wax, for example 70 C.
After obtaining a clear solution, the whole is cooled to about 65 C, then poured into suitable molds which are cooled quickly. The lipstick sticks thus obtained are unmolded in the usual manner. No mixing is necessary after obtaining the clear solution.
The composition and preparation of a lipstick stick have just been described, but, of course, the coloring mixture of the invention is not limited to this particular form, and can, as indicated above, be present in any other liquid, solid or pasty form
The coloring mixture according to the invention owes its high dyeing power to the fact that the halogenated fluorescine is found therein at least partly in the dissolved state. After application, it quickly gives an indelible stain and causes only slight irritation to the skin.
