B. 0,1 his 50 g im Liter enthalten.

Bath for the electrolytic deposition of heavy metals. The invention relates to a bath for electrolytic deposition of heavy metals, such as. B. silver, gold, copper, zinc and metal alloys, such as. B. brass, which: has an alkaline reaction and contains complex compounds of the metals to be deposited and also alkali, imeta @ ll compounds.
Complex compounds of the metals to be precipitated are understood to mean those compounds which contain the metal to be precipitated, not in the form of a simple cation but as a composite ion, the metal to be precipitated or the metal to be felled z.
B. as, cyanides may be present. A deraw term bath can, for. B. silver as Na.trium # il # bemyanid or copper, z. B. as potassium copper cyanide, also contain alkali cyanide and alkali carbonate. Instead of eyanalkalis @ chen baths, rhodanide baths, e.g.
B. solbhe, which calcium silver red: oclanid or sodium silver rhodanide. and expediently still free alkali metal rhoidanide: contained, can be used.
It is already known to add gloss additives to baths of the type identified above, e.g. B. sulfur respectively. Sulfur compounds such as carbon disulfide, sodium thiosu, ifat and the like. to add. However, the effect of such additives fails in the manufacture of thicker precipitates, e.g.
B. of 4 g of silver on the dm2 (90% silver plating). The precipitated metal then comes out of the bath with a matt finish and requires post-treatment to produce a shiny surface, e.g. For example, by scratching with steel brushes, polishing the stable and then adding a 11 # glossy finish (so-called buffing).
It has also already been proposed that the baths, e.g. B. strongly alkaline, free caustic alkali containing silver salt baths col loids to get precipitates with glossy surface. However, these baths have the disadvantage that they decompose more or less rapidly and the decomposition products interfere with the electrolysis.
As has been found, with the aid of alkaline complex baths of the type identified above, shiny metal coatings of extraordinary hardness can be produced if care is taken to ensure that selenium compounds are present in the electrolyte. The bath liquid can, for. B. 0.01 to 20 g per liter of selenium in the form of soluble compounds, e.g. B. as sodium selenite.
The presence of selenium compounds in the bath liquid offers, as has been found, the possibility of using current densities of 0.3 to 4 Amp, \ dm \, z. B. .such from 1., 5 to 4 Amp or 2.5 to 4 Amp / dm = to work. The possibility of working with high current densities enables the electroplating time to be shortened considerably compared to known methods. plan can e.g.
B. Silver plating, which previously took 3 to 4 hours to complete, in the fifth to tenth part of the previously usual time. carry out.
The coatings obtainable with the bath according to the invention are distinguished by their noticeable hardness. Comparative tests have shown that z. B. Silver coatings showed a Brinell hardness of about 90 to 100, while the silver coatings produced by conventional methods only showed a Brinell hardness of about. 30 to 40 showed.
The scratch hardness of silver coatings with the bath according to the invention was more than twice as great as the scratch hardness of silver coatings produced by conventional methods.
This extraordinary hardness of the silver coatings results in less wear and tear and better retention of the gloss.
The objects plated in bathrooms of the claimed type come out of the bathroom with such a shine that subsequent treatments such as scratching or polishing steel can be omitted and, apart from saving work, also avoid material losses. will. Also, there is no scratching during the galvanization and the rinsing that this causes. losses away.
To achieve the final high gloss, all that is required is a light buffing.
The use of selenium for galvanic syllable deposition, for example on cutlery, is absolutely safe, since the gloss additives are not deposited in detectable quantities.
According to one embodiment of the invention, besides soluble core compounds, other gloss additives can be incorporated into the baths. As, such come z. B. sulfur compounds such as carbon disulfide, thiourea, ammonium rhodanide, sodium thiosulfate and others into consideration. The bath liquid can sulfur compounds of the type mentioned in amounts of z. B. 0.1 to 50 g per liter. This allows the gloss of the metal layers produced to be increased somewhat.
You can also add organic gloss additives to the baths, preferably aromatic aldehydes and their derivatives, such as. B. Piperonal, anisaldehyde, coumarin and dergh add. By using such additives, high-gloss coatings can be produced using current densities which extend over a larger area.
All particularly good gloss-giving additives have been found with organic acids, preferably fatty acids condensed protein degradation products, as they are known under the trade names Lamepon A, B, C, D or Lamepha-n, proven. You then get coatings which are characterized by a particularly high gloss.
The level of gloss-giving condensation products in the baths can fluctuate within certain limits. One liter of bath liquid can, for. B. 0.1-10 g, advantageously 0.5-2 g of such additives.
The baths according to the invention are particularly suitable for the treatment of per filierte objects such. B. of spoons. Even with objects of this type provided with depressions, etc., coatings of the same thickness and of the same beauty can be achieved at all points.
Due to the joint presence of selenium compounds and protein degradation products condensed with organic acids, there is such an improvement in the gloss range in a wide flow density range that even at the deepest points of profiled objects an even gloss is achieved is procreated.
Baths according to the invention also allow the production of thicker coatings. You can z. B. produce high-gloss layers of 4 g / dm 'and even thicker 1s layers on polished surfaces.
As already mentioned, electrolysis with baths according to the invention offers the possibility of working with current densities of up to 4 amps / @ dm '. The electrolysis is advantageously carried out at room temperature with slight agitation of the bath. Examples: 1. Objects to be electroplated, e.g. B.
Egg cutlery, after the usual degreasing, are placed in a bath with the following composition:
EMI0003.0030
30 <SEP> g <SEP> silver <SEP> as <SEP> sodium silver cyanide.
<tb> 30 <SEP> g <SEP> free <SEP> potassium cyanide
<tb> 30 <SEP> g <SEP> potassium carbonate
<tb> 2 <SEP> g <SEP> selenium <SEP> as <SEP> sodium selenite
<tb> 0.5 <SEP> g <SEP> sodium thiosulphate
<tb> 1 <SEP> liter <SEP> water.
Electroplating is carried out at room temperature with moderately agitated cathodes -with 2.5 amp / dm ', 1.6 to 1.8 volts, for 24 minutes. The current yield was anodic and catholic <B> 100%. </B> A silver coating of 4 g silver pTO idm @, which corresponds to the usual 90% silver plating, was obtained, with the object. showed a smooth shiny surface after rinsing.
The Brinell hardness was 95. The components to be electroplated can also initially be combined in a manner known per se after degreasing by dipping in solutions of mercury salts and then plated with the bath according to the invention.
2. Instead of the galvanizing bath mentioned in example 1! a bath can be used following the composition:
EMI0003.0052
30 <SEP> g <SEP> silver <SEP> as <SEP> sodium silver yanide
<tb> 30 <SEP> g <SEP> free <SEP> galium cyanide
<tb> 30 <SEP> g <SEP> potassium carbonate
<tb> 2 <SEP> g <SEP> selenium <SEP> as <SEP> sodium selenite
<tb> 5 <SEP> g <SEP> sodium rhoda @ nid:
<tb> 1 <SEP> g <SEP> anisaldehyde <SEP> as a <SEP> bisulfite compound
<tb> 1 <SEP> liter <SEP> water.
If an object is electroplated in this bath according to the instructions in Example 1, then it is also carried out according to; A high-gloss silver coating with a Brinell hardness of 90 is obtained for about 30 minutes.
3. Objects to be electroplated: After the usual pre-cleaning and degreasing, the objects are placed in a bath with the following composition:
EMI0003.0065
40g <SEP> silver <SEP>; as <SEP> Kaliumsilib-ercyanicl
<tb> 30 <SEP> g <SEP> free <SEP> potassium cyanide
<tb> 30 <SEP> g <SEP> potassium @ carb @ onat
<tb> 5 <SEP> g <SEP> Selenium <SEP> as <SEP> sodium sielenite
<tb> 0.5 <SEP> g <SEP> sodium thiosulphate
<tb> 1 <SEP> b <SEP> Lamepon <SEP> A
<tb> 1 <SEP> liter <SEP> Wassex.
It is galvanized at room temperature with moderately agitated cathodes with current densities of 3 Amp / dm @ at 1.6 to 1.8 volts about 20 minutes. The current yield is anodic and cathodic, dis, ch <B> 100%. </B> A shiny silver coating of 4 g / dm 'is obtained. The Brinell hardness is 95.
When treating polished objects, the coating shows a uniformly smooth and shiny surface even in the depths of the object.
4. A bath with the following composition is used for electroplating: 30 g silver as sodium silver cyanide 30 g free potassium cyanide 30 g potassium carbonate 5 g selenium as sodium trium selenite 5 g sodium rhodium, danide 1 g lamephan 1 liter water: r .
The electroplating is carried out as in Example 3, with the proviso that the treatment time is measured at about 30 minutes. 31a.n receives even, high-gloss silver coatings with a Brinell hardness of 90, even on heavily polished objects.
