\ experienced in the manufacture of electrodes for spark plugs. The invention relates to a process for the production of electrodes for spark plugs, which consist of a shaft made of a material with a thermal conductivity of at least 250 Kcal / m h C and an ignition piece made of an erosion-resistant material. With such electrodes, the quality of the connection between the two parts has a very great influence on the erosion resistance of the electrode.
It is very important that the contact between the two parts is very intimate on a relatively large surface. In a known embodiment, a copper shaft is inserted into a hole in a nickel piece and brazed therein. When brazing, voids easily form in the solder, which severely impair the heat transfer and thus promote the erosion of the electrode.
The method according to the invention, by which the disadvantages of the previously known types of attachment are to be avoided, consists in melting the shaft in a Boh tion of the ignition piece.
The accompanying drawing, which is an example of an embodiment of the method for the production of the electrode to be described, shows the electrode in three stages of the production process. a is a short piece of rod made of nickel, tungsten or a suitable alloy with high erosion resistance,
which forms the ignition tip of the electrode and b the shaft made of a 'fusible metal with good thermal conductivity, preferably copper.
In the starting state (Fig. 1), the ignition tip a is stronger than at the end of the process after processing. The .piece a was provided with .a hole c,
the depth of which is a multiple of its diameter and the walls of which have been widened at the end to control the melting process and to achieve a fusion of the edge of the ignition tip.
When joining the two parts , the shaft is inserted into the bore and the parts are pressed against one another by suitable means, for example springs. The ignition piece is then heated so much that the shaft melts from the tip and completely fills the bore. When the entire bore is filled with the material of the shaft, the electrode (Fig. 2) is removed from the heating device, whereupon the molten part of the shaft in the bore it stares.
The electrode is then overworked so that it forms a rod that is smooth on the outside (FIG. 3).
For the purpose of heating, electrical current is expediently used, which flows through a heat-insulated steel sleeve into which the electrode (a-b) is inserted. Electric heating has the advantage that it can be precisely regulated and monitored.
As sections through the electrode have shown, the hole is completely filled by the shaft material, creating an intimate contact between the shaft and the ignition tip over the entire surface of the interlocking parts and, as a result, very good heat transfer from the ignition tip to the shaft is effected.
