Method for producing pores on light metal running surfaces, in particular on aluminum pistons of internal combustion engines. In order to improve the running properties of sliding machine parts, a number of post-treatment processes for heavy and light metals have become known in addition to machine finishing operations (for example grinding, diamond turning, lapping or the like).
On the running surfaces of light metal pistons, for example, thin soft metal layers made of tin, lead, zinc or other metals are applied, which compensate for the unevenness of the machined running surface and should avoid pitting due to their flexibility at pressure points.
It is also known to use anodic oxidation on aluminum flasks with sulfuric acid or oxalic acid to produce a capillary, so-called anodized layer, which has the ability to soak up oil into its pores.
> The effective application of this process is limited to pistons of the aluminum-silicon group in the cast state. In addition, the abrasion of the anodized layer (A1203 emery) is a dangerous contamination of the lubricant; oil.
In addition to these post-treatment processes, the etching of light metal running layers on pistons and bearings by immersion in acids or alkalis has also been used; proposed with the aim of making the surface porous and oil-absorbent.
It has been shown, however, that fine and very evenly distributed pores on the surface are difficult to produce because with; weak etching only shallow hollows, but strong etching creates spongy, mechanically less resistant layers.
The present invention is the. The underlying task is to create a method which does not adhere to these difficulties. The aim of the new process is to attack the running surfaces in the manner of a needle

take place, so that pores respectively. be able to form pore-connecting cores of a favorable size without impairing the smoothness of the surface, which has previously been created by fine machining, through noticeable roughening. The treads that can be achieved according to the invention give the oil film the opportunity to anchor itself more diverse than before and to constantly renew itself in the company.
On the other hand, surfaces treated by anodic oxidation can only absorb 01 immediately after the treatment, which gradually loses its lubricating effect. The possibility of supplementing with oil is questionable because experience has shown that the pores later no longer prove to be receptive.
Compared to the process of improving the running properties of sliding parts by means of compressible metal coatings. the new process has the advantage of saving important raw materials.
According to the invention, the light metal tread is subjected to an anodic treatment in such electrolytes, which in this case etch the light metal like a needle, such as electrolytes containing chlorine, fluorine or bromine ions, in particular hydrochloric acid.
The salts of aluminum formed by the pin prick-like attack on the running surfaces respectively. of the alloy components can be removed from the pores mechanically, chemically or galvanically, which is not the case with electrolytically produced oxide layers of the base metal. In contrast, the aluminum oxide forms a cohesive armor that adheres extremely firmly to the base body - that is, to the aluminum.
Electrolytes that can be used for the new process are above all the salt solutions or acids of the halogens or their mixtures, for example sodium chloride, potassium chlorate, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, perchloric acid and others. Organic acids such as picric acid and acetic acid can also be used.
The desired effect of the pin-prick-like attack on the running surface occurs with various tensions; it can even arise without an applied voltage, in that the various potential differences between cathode and anode create a current as in a short-circuited galvanic element. Due to the anodic etching of fine pores, a dark layer forms on the running surface of some alloys.
To expose the pores, this layer can be removed either mechanically by brushing or chemically by immersion in suitable liquids (e.g. nitric acid or hydrogen peroxide) or by a short galvanic treatment (e.g. in sulfuric acid, nitric acid or sodium sulfite). Example: Let the running surface of the aluminum piston be of the following composition: 13 g 'o silicon 1% nickel 1 g' o copper 1% magnesium, the remainder aluminum.
After the usual cleaning and degreasing, the flask is hung in a bath that consists of an aqueous 7% saline solution to which 1% hydrochloric acid is added.
A voltage of 5 volts is now applied to the bulb as the anode and a gohle plate as the cathode, the current density being, for example, 0.3 Amp / cm '.
After 5 minutes of treatment, the flask is removed and rinsed in hot water.
To neutralize any acids or salts that may have adhered, the flask is then immersed in 10% soda solution for 5 seconds and finally the dark layer that is still adhering is removed by immersion in 20% nitric acid.
