Coupling device for vehicle trailer. The present invention relates to a coupling device for a vehicle trailer, comprising means for removably fixing the trailer to the vehicle by means of an articulation mechanism allowing said trailer to be .moved at least in relation to the direction taken by the vehicle.
The device according to the invention. East. charac terized in that the. the aforesaid means comprise support members for said articulation mechanism, these members being intended to be fixed to the vehicle, and in that the articulation mechanism has means for preventing overturning of the trailer only when the latter ci moves with respect to the direction taken by the vehicle.
The accompanying drawing represents, to. by way of example, an embodiment of the coupling device, forming the subject of the present invention.
The fi-. 1 is an elevation view thereof.
Figs. 2 and 2a in. are plan views in which the attachment members of the trailer are shown in two different positions.
Fig. 3 is a vine at the end of the device.
Fig. 4 is a view on a larger scale of a detail. .of the articulation mechanism of this device.
Fig. 5 is an end view thereof, and FIG. 6- schematically represents the device adapted to a bicycle.
The embodiment which will be described applies more particularly to a coupling device for a single wheel remark of the bicycle.
The coupling device shown in FIG. 1 includes two bars: a in. U interconnected at one end by a cross member c, the free ends of these bars being fixed to the lower rear fork of the bicycle, by means of wing screws b. The trailer is fixed in m, 7n on a k console with a reinforcing rib,
this console being itself fixed by bolts 1 on a pivoting part g presenting- as of the journal holders arranged along a vertical axis t. A journal e with a knurled head f and an axis t is screwed into one of the journal holders of the part g and constitutes the pivot axis. of the trailer in relation to the plane comprising the frame and the rear wheel of the bicycle.
Another journal p of horizontal axis u is also screwed at one end into a journal holder g integral with one of the bars a; this journal constitutes the pivot axis of the relative trailer. with a horizontal plan according to fig. 1 and 8 :. A sleeve h through which passes the journal p, serves as a connection between the latter and the journal e with vertical axis t.
The pivot part g has, coming from manufacture with it, a rectangular shaped plate tt and. whose edges have. been slightly lowered -d; e so as to facilitate, on the one hand, the engagement of said plate in an opening s formed in a part r fixed on the cross member c, and, on the other hand, its passage over a cross member o as will be described. further.
Arms w are also attached, on the one hand, to the end of the frame formed by the bars, a of the coupling device and, on the other hand, to the fork connecting the hub of the rear wheel to the tube. saddle carrier of the bicycle, so as to form a rigid assembly as shown in FIG. 6.
The operation of the embodiment which has just been described is as follows: The trailer fixed to the console k is preferably of the single-wheel type. While driving in a straight line, this trailer follows uneven ground by pivoting only around the axis u of the coupling device (see fig. 2a).
In a bend, the steering of the bicycle has the effect of bringing the trailer, for example in the position indicated in fig. 2, in which the plate n has moved with the note and is engaged in the opening s by pressing its. on the curved face, on the one hand, on the cross member c and, on the other hand, on a cross member o.
In this position, the weight of the re morque which solicited the sleeve h, is distributed on the crosspieces c and o by means of the plate n, said sleeve h thus being blocked. Thanks to this arrangement, the trailer cannot overturn when initiating a turn and at a standstill,
the whole bicycle and trailer can be kept balanced.
Moreover, if you want to unhitch the trailer, it suffices to unscrew the journal p to release the sleeve h, the bars a and; the arms w remaining, in this case, fixed to the bicycle. To unhitch the trailer,
it is also possible to unscrew the wing screws b of the bars a as well as the fixing screws (not shown) of the arms w.
The coupling device described has: the advantage of having the attachment point of the trailer frame at the height of the hub of the rear wheel, that is to say as low as possible, which allows reach a high speed without danger of overturning the trailer.
It is understood that one could provide damping means for the oscillations around the axis u, making it possible to absorb the shocks due. to a defective roadway.
Although the embodiment described applies more particularly to a coupling device for a single-wheel bicycle trailer, provision could be made for the application of such a device to any vehicle.
