Tool for working the land.
The object of the present invention is a tool for working the earth. It is characterized by a frame carrying the iron of the tool and rotatably mounted on the handle, so as to be able to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the handle and by a stop device having an elastic member. and intended to cooperate with said mount to temporarily fix it in one or other of various positions relative to the handle, each position corresponding to a different use of the tool.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view and FIG. 2 a plan view of the first embodiment; fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal section through III-III of fig. 2 and fig. 4 and 5 of sections IV-IV, respectively V-V of fig. 3, on a larger scale.
Fig. 6 is a partial longitudinal section of the second embodiment and FIG. 7 a section through VII-VII of fig. 6.
The embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 5 includes a handle 1 and an iron 2, which can be used as a spade. At the end of the handle 1 carrying the iron 2 are mounted two metal flanges 3 and 4 fixed by screws 5, respectively 6, and held tightly on the bar 1 by a metal ring 7. The flanges 3 and 4 are extended. gent beyond the end of the handle by two widened parts between which is mounted a bolt 8 tightened on the flanges by nuts 9; the axis of the bolt is perpendicular to the axis of the handle 1.
On the bolt 8 and between the flanges 3 and 4 is rotatably mounted a cylindrical metal core 10 on the periphery of which is fixed a metal flange 11; between the ends of this flange is fixed the iron 2, by riveting, for example. The iron is thus integral with the core 10. The flange has three frustoconical projections 13, 14 and 15, disposed radially at 45 "from one another.
Screws 16 fixing the flange 11 on the core 10 are screwed into these projections.
The end of the handle 1 carrying the flanges 3 and 4 has an axial cylindrical housing 17 in which a metal sleeve 18 is forced out; in this sleeve can slide a metal rod 19, one end of which has a frustoconical recess 20 to engage on the projections 13, 14 and 15 of the flange 11. Between the rod 19 and the bottom of the sleeve 18 is placed a spring coil 21. The rod 19 has a transverse hole 22, in which is driven a pin 23 exiting on the sides of the handle through longitudinal openings 24 of the sleeve 18 and 25 of the handle 1.
The way to use the tool is as follows:
When the tool is intended to serve as a spade, the iron 2 is placed in the extension of the handle 1 by engaging the projection 13 in the recess of the rod 19; the pressure of the spring 20 securely holds the flange, the sleeve and the iron in this position. If the tool is to be used as a shovel, the rod 19 is withdrawn back, against the spring 20, by means of the pin 23, in order to release the projection 13; the iron is then rotated around the bolt 8, so that the projection 14 is in front of the rod 19 and the latter is released so that its end engages on this projection; the iron 2 will then be maintained in a position inclined at 45 on the axis of the handle.
Finally, if the tool is to be used as a hoe, proceeding in the same way, the projection 15 will be engaged in the recess of the rod 19 and the iron will be kept in a position perpendicular to the handle.
The embodiment shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 comprises, like the first embodiment, a handle 1 and an iron 2, flanges 3 and 4, held tight on the handle 1 by a ring 7, and a bolt 8 tightened on the flanges by nuts 9 .
On the bolt 8 and between the flanges 3 and 4 are rotatably mounted two discs 28 and 29, each welded on one side of a flange 30, the ends of which are riveted to the iron 2. The discs 28 and 29 each have on their periphery a notch 31 arranged so that the iron 2 can engage therein to give more rigidity to the connection between the flange 30 and the iron 2. The flange 30 has three openings 32, 33, 34 arranged at 45 one of the other. In these openings can engage a frustoconical projection 36 of a metal rod 35 disposed in the handle 1, in the same way as that described for the rod 19 of the first embodiment.
The other elements are identical to the corresponding elements of the first embodiment and are not described again.
When it is desired to change the position of the iron 2, the rod 35 is withdrawn back against the spring 21 and the projection 36 of the rod 35 is released from the opening 32, for example; the iron can then be rotated by 45, for example, and the rod will be released so that the protrusion 36 engages the opening 33 and the iron 2 is held in its new position.
When the tool must be transported on a bag, on a man's back, which will be the case in the army, for example, the handle 1 will preferably be formed of two removable sections which can be attached to one another. the other by fitting one into a metal sleeve that the other has.
