Alliage d'acier.

Alloy steel. This invention relates to steel alloys and more particularly aims to improve the machining capability of these so-called “special steels” alloys.
Until now, the practice most commonly used to improve the ease with which steels can be machined has been the addition of sulfur to the steel. For example, certain so-called "free-cutting" steels are well known. in the steel industry. The Society of Automotive Engineers has recognized this class of special steels and established standard specifications for their chemical composition. Selenium is sometimes used, although the cost of this element is somewhat prohibitive.
Normally, when sulfur or selenium are used to improve the machinability of steel, they are introduced in amounts such as to ensure that a finished steel is obtained containing more than 0.05% of the steel. one or the other of these elements; or, if both are used, a total of more than 0.05% is usually required.
It had already been proposed to incorporate -from 0.5 to 2% lead in a ferrous alloy containing from 15 to 80% chromium in order to reduce the size of the grains and their grain limits and to prevent grain development. when the alloys are called upon to be subjected to relatively high temperatures and subsequent cooling, and with a view to making the alloy easier to work with and more apt to resist corrosion. However,: or does not seem to have thought that it is possible to improve the ease of machining special steels by the addition of lead.
The steel alloy according to the invention, which contains metals which increase the mechanical strength of the steel in proportions not exceeding <B> 6.00%, </B> and having good properties of machining, is characterized by the fact that it contains carbon in quantities ranging from the effective minimum up to 1.70%, manganese from 0.10 to 2.00%, ten trace silicon at 2.50%, trace phosphorus at 0.11%, trace sulfur at 0.30, 'and lead between the limits of 0.03 and 1.1I1)? ,, at least most of the lead being substantially uniformly dispersed throughout alloy and serving to improve its machining ability.
By metals increasing the mechanical resistance of steel, it is necessary to understand the z; iiivants: Ni, Cr, Cu, Co, Mo, Wo, Vd, Zr, Ti. Nb, Ta. and Al, thus (read manganese and silicon for their contents in addition to those which can be found in an ordinary steel, that is to say 1% for the ma.ganese and 0.5 for the silicon.
The invention is applicable to so-called nickel "steels which may contain, for example, 0.1 to <B> 0.6% </B> of carbon, 0.1 to. 1.% of manganese, traces of <B> 0.5% </B> silicon, traces of <B> 0.05% </B> phosphorus, traces of 0.06% sulfur and 0.4 to 6% It is also applicable to "nickel-chromium" steels which may contain 0.1 to 0.6% carbon, 0.1 to 1% manganese. traces to. 0.5% silicon, traces to. <I> 0.05 </I>% phosphorus, traces at (1.06% sulfur, 1 to 4% nickel and 0.4 <B> at, </B> '21% chromium.
Likewise, it is applicable to steels containing "molybdenum", for example. 0.1 to (1.6% carbon, 0.1 to, 1% man ganese, traces of <B> 0.5%, </B> (silicon, traces of. <B> U5% </ B > phosphorus, traces at 0.00l ', sulfur, traces at <B> L25% </B> of chromium, traces at 4% of nickel and 0.1 -i 0.5 e ,,, , molybdenum.
The invention is also applicable to chromium "steels containing, for example, 0.1 to 1.1.% (Carbon, 0.1 to 1% of ma n-o'anèse, traces at, 0.5% silicon, traces at 0.0 (5% phosphorus, traces at 0.06% sulfur and 0.25 to. 2% chromium.
It is also applicable to chromium-vanadium steels "containing, for example, 0.1 to <B> y, </B> of carbon, 0.1 to 1% of manganese, traces of 0.5% of silicon, traces at 0.05% phosphorus, traces at 0.06% sulfur, 0.5-1.5% chromium and (), l <B> il </B> M'V, vanadium.
Likewise, it applies to "maiigaiièse" steels containing, for example, 0.1 i (<B> 0.6% </B> of carbon, 1.25 to 29% of manganese, traces of - <B> 0.5% </B> silicon, (traces at 11.1) 5,; phosphorus and traces at <B> 0.06 </B>? J of sulfur.
In the practice of the invention, lead has been added to steel by various wax processes. will be explained in more detail below. For the moment we will be satisfied to observe that it seems important (for lead be added to the steel in the subdivided state and under conditions which ensure considerable agitation of the steel. For example, lead has The parts of the steel have been satisfactorily dispersed in roads by its introduction into the molten steel contained in a hollow set in a high-frequency induction furnace, (naturally causes it to stir the steel.
It has also been satisfactorily dispersed in all parts (the steel by introducing it; in liners during the casting and, preferably, by starting this introduction of lead in the early stages. the filling of the mold. <B> It </B> is also important that the lead is introduced in sufficient quantities to ensure the retention of the desired quantity in the steel.
For example, the applicant's tests have shown that, by introducing lead percentages close to 1 "; of the weight of the steel, it is possible to obtain, under favorable conditions, approximately 0.5 to ( ?, 7 ,,; lead in the finished steel.
It has been found that the steel alloys known as "special steels" containing 0.03 to 1 and preferably from 0.03 to 0.4787 ° of lead can be machined more easily under various heat treatment states and as they are. obtained by hot rolling. By this is meant (read special steels before a given chemical composition. Apart from lead, and having been thermally treated so that they have the same mechanical resistance and the same hardness, are easier to machine and machine. can be machined at.
a faster rate when they contain 0.03 to 1% lead due when they do not contain this element. It has also been found that, among steels having essentially the same chemical composition, with the exception of the lead content, those which contain lead can be machined more easily under industrial and economic conditions, whereas they have greater hardness and mechanical strength than when lead is absent.
Experience has shown that adding lead to these special steels within the limits given above does not adversely affect the forging and rolling characteristics; that these steels can be heat treated by the usual methods; that the steels resulting from this heat treatment have essentially the same mechanical properties, such as yield strength, breaking load, elongation, reduction of sections, impact resistance and hardness, as the same steels devoid of lead.
The advantageous effect on the working property of special steels which results from the practice of this invention is evidenced by the data of Table I in which special steel containing the elements of special alloy chromium, nickel and molybdenum and in which this steel has been used with or without lead additions. This steel is quite similar to the compositions of the S. A. E. steels designated by S. A. E. 4340 and X-4340.
The results of the sawability tests of these special steels are those obtained after subjecting the specimens to two heat treatments of the kind which would normally be applied in practice. In the first heat treatment, the samples were heated to 815, soaked in oil, and then returned to 538, which gave a Brinell hardness of 341. In the second heat treatment, the samples were annealed at 815, then reverted to 677, which gave a Brinell hardness of 210.
The sawability tests show conclusively that samples containing lead were easier to machine. For example, when these steels gave a Brinell hardness of 341, the time required to cut the bars of said steels containing no lead was approximately 26% longer. When the steels gave a Brinell hardness of 210, the time required to cut the bars of steels not containing lead was approximately 16% longer.
In addition to the fact that the present steel alloys have shown greater ease of machining in saw testing, they generally make it possible to increase both speed and feed in ordinary machining operations. This results in an additional saving in the time required to perform a given amount of work or, in other words, the hourly output per machine is increased.
The machinability of the steel alloys of Table I was tested by sawability tests by comparing a steel alloy according to the invention and an alloy of the same composition not containing lead with a steel of the type known as SA E 1020, measuring the time required for sectioning bars of the SAE 1020 steel, of the lead-free alloy and of the alloy according to the invention. By dividing the average time it takes to cut the steel alloy according to the invention by the time required to cut the steel S. A.
E. 1020, a number is obtained which is called the sciability index. This index is determined in the same way for the steel alloy not containing lead.

In the practical pond of the Invention. two classes of alloying elements are used, a. namely, iron reinforcing agents, such as nickel, copper, silicon and co balt, and carbide forming agents, such as chromium, molvbdenum, tungsten and varnium, zirconium, tantalum and niobium. Manganese is also a useful alloying element and can be regarded as belonging to. either of the above classes because it acts at the. both so as to strengthen the ferrite and form carbides, although its carbide-forming power is not as high due to that of other elements of the second class.
Among some limils, phosphorus is a ferrite reinforcing agent and can be used as such in special steels, but due to certain deleterious effects of phosphorus its use as an alloying element. is somewhat limited.
Thus the special steels which lend themselves to an improvement in their ease of machining by the present process comprise, to. As alloying elements, metals selected from the group of fertile strengthening agents, metals from the group of carbide forming agents, or a combination of metals from both groups. For example, in <B> (</B> S.A ..
E. 2000, 2100, 2300 and 25011), nickel is a reinforcing agent for ferrite. although it plays other roles in other special steels. In chromium steel (S. A .. E. 51011), chromium is a powerful carbide forming agent, although it plays other roles in other special steels. In a nickel-chrome steels (S. A.
E. <B> 3100. </B> 32011. 3300 and 34001, both a ferrite reinforcing metal and a carbide forming metal are used, and these combinations provide certain advantages. In chrome-vanadium steel (S. N. E. C,] () (, two carbon-forming metals: used.
In the composition indicated in Table 1, a metal reinforcing the ferrite and two metals giving rise to carbides have been used. It has been shown that for many uses and to some degree, one small ferrite reinforcing agent may be substituted for another.
(The same as an agent giving rise to carbides can be substituted for another, without this greatly modifying the advantageous properties of the resulting special steel. The choice of ferrite reinforcing agents, carbon forming agents or combinations of these various agents is subject in part to the requirements of manufacture and the use to which the special steels are to be put in. The cost of the alloying elements is also a factor to be considered.
As a class, ferrite strengthening agents are used to increase toughness and cold workability, while carbide forming agents promote greater hardness and greater strength. wear resistance. However, these observations may not apply to all compositions.
In the choice of alloying elements intended for. In the manufacture of special steels, a combination of ferrite reinforcing agents and carbide forming agents has often been used which is such that the resulting special steel can be considered to have a balanced composition and to confer, steel the desired characteristics and properties. The invention is applicable to other special ferrous alloys.
For example, consider the application of 0.03 to 1% lead in an alloy containing 0.07 to 0.25% carbon, 0.3 to 0.7% manganese, traces at <B> 0.3% </B> silicon, 0.1 to <B> 0.15% </B> phosphorus, traces of 0.06% sulfur, 0.75 to 1.25% copper and 0 , 4 to 0.7% nickel. Although alloys of this type are frequently used under conditions which do not require machining, there are instances where machining is desirable and such a lead containing alloy is within the scope of this invention.
Many steels of compositions other than those previously indicated have been manufactured by the Applicant and some of these steels are specified in Table II.
The sawability of the steel alloys of Table II was determined by comparison with a steel bar of type S. A. E. 1020 as indicated for Table 1.

:. after a short. During the time interval during which the steel was agitated by the induced current, the lead steel was poured into a second ingot mold. The resulting ingots, weighing 22.6 kg, were forged and converted into bars by rolling. About half of each ingot was thus converted to round bar 25.4 mm in diameter and only half was converted to round bar 19 mm in diameter. No <; significant difference between lead-free steels and lead-containing steels in forging and rolling operations.
The compositions shown in Table II are the results of chemical analyzes of the ingots. Steels of the type specified in Table II and which contain at least 0.03 Pb fall within the scope of this invention.
The invention is also applicable to types of special steels containing constituents including. the role is to adjust the grain size of the steel. Thus, the invention comprises the incorporation of U, (1.3 <<1,% ploinl> in a steel containing a proportion of carbon comprised between an effective iiiinum and <B> 1.7%, </ B> together with ferrite reinforcing elements and (or) earbiires forming agents, as well as an element for grain refining,
such as aluminum is kept present at I), 22-2.7 kg per tonne.
The application of lead to special steels in order to facilitate their machining does not require that the sulfur content of such steels be raised above specification; normal, although for some purposes the machining can be made even easier by slightly increasing the sulfur content.
However, this is only permissible for certain parts in which the increase in the sulfur content has no detrimental effect on the mechanical properties or. in which the desired mechanical properties can be obtained by heat treatment.
It emerges from the foregoing description that the invention confers certain important advantageous properties on special steels. In the first place, it improves in a surprising way the ease with which the special steels described above can be machined. It also improves the grain structure of steels of this kind.
In addition, these lead-containing steels have lower friction resistance or coefficients of friction than other steels with similar compositions but not containing lead. Other advantages have. been highlighted in the above description.
