EMI0002.0060
Ma <SEP> R,b <SEP> -L <SEP> 31b <SEP> Ra <SEP> * <SEP> Ma <SEP> Ra <SEP> -f-- <SEP> Mb <SEP> Rb.
Process for covering welding rods made of light metal with a coating. The invention relates to a method for covering welding rods made of light metal with a casing.
It is known that the coating compound of such welding rods must have the ability to produce light metal, e.g. Aluminum oxide layers that cover the metal surface to be welded to be removed. Furthermore, it must also, especially when the welding rods are used as welding electrodes, be able to dissolve the oxygen and nitrogen compounds of aluminum, magnesium and other alloy constituents that arise during heating in the welding arc.
It is important that the absorption of the oxides and nitrides does not significantly increase the melting point of the coating compound and the solidification point of the resulting slag, that the coating is not water-attracting, that the ionizability of the spark gap is increased and that the resulting slag is not Slag is brittle and can easily be removed from the weld seam.
By observing these and a number of other requirements, when selecting and combining the components of the mixture that make up the coating compound, it should not be overlooked that the mechanical strength of the coating during transport and handling of the welding rods is not negligible be asked.
If the coating compound consists of a. Salt mixture, then when the salt slurry is applied to the rods, reactions with the metal can also occur, for example during the drying process, through which the viscosity of the salt slurry with which the rod has been covered already shortly after application on the rod decreases so much that the envelope begins to flow and runs off the rod.
Furthermore, the mechanical strength of the casing can be greatly reduced, for example, by the formation of brittle types of crystals when the salt crust solidifies.
As far as the cause of the occurrence of such disturbances has been recognized, attempts have been made, inter alia, to remedy the situation by increasing the degree of grinding and thus the number of nuclei available for crystallization. or by adding viscosity-increasing substances, binders or colloids to the mixture to be used for the wrapping. However, these measures did little to improve the usability of the welding rods.
When using organic colloids, carbon is introduced into the envelope, which can have a harmful effect especially when welding light metal, and when using inorganic binders or colloids, such as. B. Bolus alba, you have to bezw with unwanted shifts in the melting point of the envelope. the solidification point of the slag.
The invention aims to eliminate these disadvantages and is based on the knowledge that the above-mentioned tasks to be solved by the coating compound during the actual welding process can only be performed by salts, and it therefore strives to create welding rods whose coating compound is made up exclusively is made up of salts and yet can meet all of the above requirements regarding the properties of this mass.
This is achieved according to the invention in that the welding rods in at least: a pulpy mixture of at least two different salts with at least four different ions, which are selected in this way. that at least two salts react with one another, are immersed.
The type of salts to be used in light metal welding is known per se. They are mainly the halides of the alkali metals, the alkaline earth metals and the earth metals, but the salts of the fixed acids of these metals can also be added to the mixture, e.g. B. the sulfates, phosphates and the like.
Assume, for example, that the coating should consist of two salts whose cations Ma and Mb and whose anions Ra and Rb are ind, the anion R,., Having a greater affinity for the cation Mb than for the cation Ma,
and the affinity of the anion Ra for Mb is smaller than the affinity of the anion Rb for Mb. If you now prepare the coating mass in such a way that the salts Ma-Ra and MbRb are mixed to a pulp, then none of the salts will be anyhow kind of reactions occur.
However, such a coating compound, even if it can be applied to the metal rod by dipping, for example, and dries satisfactorily on it, will not have a sufficient bond, neither to the metal rod nor to the individual salt crystals with one another. If you stir the salt paste using the salts Ma Rb and M ,, Ra, then the following exchange reaction will occur:
EMI0002.0060
Ma <SEP> R, b <SEP> -L <SEP> 31b <SEP> Ra <SEP> * <SEP> Ma <SEP> Ra <SEP> -f-- <SEP> Mb <SEP> Rb. If the rod is coated with such a salt mixture shortly before the end or at the end of the reaction taking place in it, then the coating created in this way shows a surprisingly high binding force, strength and toughness compared to the above-mentioned, differently produced coating of chemically identical composition.
The ideas that led to the invention and probably give the correct justification for the appearance are as follows: The mechanical resistance of the cover to shock and impact stress depends on the fact that coarser and finer crystal grains are present in a suitable mixing ratio, ins What is special, however, is that the coarser crystals of one component of the mixture are cemented together by fine grains of another mixture component.
As studies have also shown, this state is achieved to a satisfactory extent when the small crystals that release the cement between the coarse crystals have not been introduced into the mixture from the outset, but are only formed in it.
It is therefore also desirable that the conversion in the salt mixture not
EMI0003.0003
Instead of the double salt Ma Ra. Mb Rb can also use double salts of the type Ma. Mb (Rb) or (Mb) Ra. Rb or Both arise: in each case, however, the newly emerging connection to both of the main crystals MaRb and Mb Ra is more chemically related than these two crystals to each other. This closer relationship, however, results in a higher level of adhesion and therefore gives the mixture greater strength.
The newly formed salt thus forms a bridge between the crystals of the two salts Ma Rb and Mb Ra.
The above chemical explanation is easier to understand than an explanation with the help of crystallographic knowledge, because when a system consisting of at least four elements solidifies, the processes are already quite involved, but in any case it can be seen that with this solidification, if the Salt paste was mixed together according to the findings explained above, different mixed crystals can arise, which act in the sense of a better binding of the solidified mass.
The viscosity of the salt mash, on which the adherence of the wet mixture to the rod depends, is in some circumstances not insignificantly influenced by the reactions that lead to the new salt compounds. In many cases, these reactions are exothermic. The resultant increase in heat results in a reduction in the viscosity of the salt paste forming the coating and, under certain circumstances, in its drainage from the rod. It is therefore advisable in the event of annoying heat changes; it takes place in accordance with the above formula, which can hardly occur in practice.
The formula is only schematic and is used to make it easier to understand.
In practice, most of the salt mixtures that come under consideration will form new salts as reaction products, for example according to the formula: moderate, so that the reaction takes place before the mixture is applied.
The crystallization of the salt compounds can also influence the viscosity. The compounds formed by the implementation of the introduced cations and anions have an inhibiting effect on the crystallization of the supersaturated mixture, so that despite. longer standing the mixture remains submersible. The desired crystallization occurs only as a result of the large surface area that the thin coatings have on the rods after dipping and the resulting drainage.
The accommodation of the various salt components necessary for the fulfillment of the tasks of the envelope can also be made in one, in two or more different layers, which is known per se.
It has even proven to be expedient to eliminate disruptive secondary reactions between the various salts, to group the various salts on the different layers, apart from the fact that (salts with higher water absorption capacity are expediently in the inner layers, the envelope housed.
It is also useful, because of the heating of the rods, to take into account the height and the melting point of the various layers.
An expedient arrangement, the "Schioh- th" consists in that the "layer, which is closest to the metal rod, consists for the most part of fluorides," corresponding to the ratio F: Cl: 2: 1, while in the following layers Q:
Cl @ 2-: 1 can be. The fluorides are more resistant than the chlorides at the high arc temperature, so that the evaporation of the flux is reduced. The porosity of the weld seam is reduced as a result.
The invention is to be further explained using a special exemplary embodiment of a coating compound that can be used for welding aluminum-magnesium alloys: In the dry state, the compound consists of 28 parts by weight of NaF, 24 parts of NaCl and 28 parts of LiCl. This embodiment thus just fulfills the requirement of the invention that at least four different ions must be present; for this mass, if water is added to it, can break down into the ions Na, Li, F and Cl. But sodium has a higher affinity for chlorine than for fluorine, and the affinity of lithium for chlorine is, on the other hand, less than that of sodium.
As a result, the sodium fluoride introduced into the mixture will react in whole or in part with the lithium chloride. It would therefore be wrong to add the entire amount of sodium in the form of the chlorine salt and the lithium in the form of the fluorine salt to the mixture, although the quantitative chemical composition of such a mixture is the same as that of the above. would.
For welding other aluminum alloys, such as B. manganese-based alloys are used in addition to the salts mentioned above, small additions of AlF3 and K2 (SO4), KF, KCl and the like. As I said, these salts are known per se.
The individual layers of the coating can also contain additives from the second to eighth groups of the periodic table, such as:
EMI0004.0021
MgCl2 <SEP> A1C13 <SEP> SiCl4
<tb> CaCl2 <SEP> ScCl3 <SEP> TiCl4
<tb> VCl5 <SEP> CrCl3 <SEP> MnCl2 <SEP> FeCl3 or the corresponding sulfates or fluorides. The salts listed are all capable of participating in the reaction in the sense described above.
Depending on the composition of the mixture that is used for the production of the individual layers, the method of preparation and application of the salt paste naturally has deviations. For example, salts that are easily soluble are mixed into a paste with less solvent or ground up than salts that are difficult to dissolve. In general, the amount of solvent is measured according to the viscosity that is most favorable for applying the salt paste to the rod.
The amount of solvent will therefore usually not be sufficient to completely dissolve the mixing partners. However, it must be measured in such a way that those parts which, as explained above, are to be converted with one another, can be brought into solution. It is obvious that, if necessary, use is also made of the change in solubility due to the temperature, just as it is free. to increase the amount of solvent first to such an extent that a more or less complete dissolution is brought about and then the crystallization is directed in the desired manner by removing most of the solvent.
Exemplary embodiment: A rod made of an aluminum alloy with approximately 2% Mg and 1% Mn for welding a workpiece of the same alloy is to be provided with a coating of three different layers. For these purposes, the immersion weights are applied as follows:
