Metal electrode for electric arc welding. The present invention relates to an electrode for electric arc welding, comprising a coated metal core.
It is known that a good electrode of this kind must be provided with coating material up to the end of its metal core.
To this end, during the manufacture of the electrode, not only the lateral surface of the core but also the end surfaces are generally covered with coating material.
The removal of the coating material at the end of the electrode, in order to allow the ignition of the arc, is most often done by scraping the end on the part to be welded. But this scraping sometimes gives rise to an inadmissible deterioration of the part to be welded (for example in the case where the part to be welded is a thin sheet), to the deposit of metal in undesirable places as a result of the ignition of the arcing in these places and the removal of chips of coating material near the end.
To remedy this drawback, it has been proposed to grind the end of the coated electrode before its use for welding, in order to strip the end of the metal core. This procedure gives rise to additional grinding work and does not always prevent the removal of large chips of coating near the stripped end.
In addition, after grinding, fragments of the coating can be easily removed from the end of the electrode during the manipulations to which this electrode is subjected.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
For this purpose, the core of the coated metal electrode according to the invention ends with a point which is coated.
The presence of the point at the end of the metal core allows the coating to also end with a pointed part. As a result, the tearing of coating chips under the effect of shocks due to handling and transport is much more difficult than with non-pointed coated electrodes. Moreover, if the embedding material has completely covered the tip of the electrode, the small layer of this material which covers the end of the tip can still be easily removed in order to allow ignition. arc, by lightly pressing the coated tip against a hard body, for example, against the workpiece where you want to start the weld.
The accompanying drawing shows schematically and by way of example only a few embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 schematically shows, in axial section, part of an electrode according to the invention, interposed in a welding circuit.
Fig. 2 to 8 show in the same way a part of various variants of the electrode according to FIG. 1.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
In fig. 1, there is shown an electrode for electric arc welding comprising a metal core 2 lined with a layer of coating material 3. The metal core 2 ends with a tip 4 also covered with coating material .
Thanks to the pointed shape of the end of the coating layer 3, it is difficult to tear off shards of this material by impact. The electrode therefore remains perfectly sealed over its entire length until the moment of its use in a soldering circuit such as, for example, that comprising a piece to be soldered 5, a current source 6 and a switch 11 which cannot be closed. only after the electrode has come into contact with the workpiece. If the end of the tip was itself covered with potting material, it could be easily removed at this point by pressing the electrode against the workpiece.
The reduced section portion 4 of the electrode according to the invention need not necessarily be in the form shown in FIG. 1. It could just as well be presented, for example, in the form shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4. It is not essential that the part of reduced section 4 be integral with the metal core 2 of the electrode. The part in question could very well, as shown in fig. 5, be attached to the metal core 2 and be in any form.
This part 4 can, for example, be mounted in the metal core 2 as shown in FIG. 5 or placed against the end of this core, as shown in FIG. 6, or else clamp the end of the core 2, as shown in FIGS. 7 and 8.
Whatever the embodiment adopted, the pointed shape of the end of the core has the additional advantage of facilitating the initiation of the arc by its rapid disappearance by melting when it is brought into contact with the arc. workpiece in the live welding circuit.
