Process for the production of cutting tools. The invention relates to a method for the production of cutting tools, such as. B. lathe tools, milling cutters, etc.
The invention consists in casting a steel alloy that contains copper.
The known alloys for cutting tools are extremely viscous, so that the shapes for those with corners, edges, cutting edges. provided tools do not flow out completely. All attempts to make the material thinner, for example by increasing the carbon or silicon content, gave unsuitable results for practical use, since these increases have an unfavorable effect on the properties of the alloy.
The addition of copper means that even the most complex shapes are filled with the material to the extreme. It appears that the solidification processes bring metallic copper to the surface of the shaped pieces. The result of these processes is expressed in smooth, clean surfaces that prevent the sand from burning on or other processes that make the moldings unsightly.
The addition of copper has the unexpected additional advantage that with subsequent annealing and subsequent hardening at a temperature higher than the annealing temperature, the copper layer causes decarburization or decarburization. Carburization of the alloy ring prevents.
This is especially true for milling tools. the cutting of which is of crucial importance, in which one previously took difficult measures in order to counteract the decarburization that occurs during therinic treatment, e.g. B. Wrapping in carburizing agents ete., Met, but that brought other disadvantages with them. The addition of copper makes all of these disadvantageous measures unnecessary.
Finally, the copper substitute has the advantage that when coarse (rough) and fine (finish) grinding of fine-toothed tools the occurrence of grinding cracks is prevented and fine and smooth teeth are achieved. It appears that the poor thermal conductivity, which adheres to the previous alloys, is significantly improved by the addition of copper, which explains the insensitivity to grinding cracks. Be that as it may, and even if the processes cannot be fully explained scientifically, the advantages of the copper additive are in any case of the greatest economic importance and represent a very significant technical advance.
If the steel alloys used contain molybdenum, it is advisable to more or less take the molybdenum content into account when metering the copper content, depending on whether the molybdenum level is higher or lower.
This can prevent the formation of molybdic acid. For example, if a steel alloy contains 1 % carbon and 1 '/ o molybdenum, you will use about' / 2 "/ o copper, but the molybdenum content is 2-3% ,
will nian rise to 9-1 / o copper.
