Process for preparing paper blanks intended for the manufacture of containers and device for implementing this process. The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of paper blanks tines for the manufacture of containers ,, in. the purpose of allowing the bonding of these blanks during this manufacture. The blanks could, for example, be intended for the manufacture of containers for milk.
According to this process, a layer of adhesive thermoplastic material is distributed over an application surface, in the form of a viscous solution, and this, chosen neck, is then transferred onto the surface of the paper blank by bringing it into contact. , without pressure, from said surface, the adhesive thermoplastic material placed on the blank becoming non-viscous and non-sticky on drying of the solution and becoming sticky again when heated.
The invention further comprises a device for. the implementation of this method.
The blanks thus prepared can be stacked for shipment or stored before being used for the manufacture of the containers.
For the implementation of the process according to the invention, it is possible to use various adhesive thermoplastic materials. However, this material should preferably have the following prom) rities:
be impervious to water, humidity, earth and grease, non-toxic, odorless, resistant to acidic water and practically non-flammable and not have any detrimental effects on edibles,
especially milk, cream and whey.
The process can be carried out for example in the following manner: A resin, natural or synthetic, which is dissolved in a solvent with or without a small amount of water is used as adhesive thermoplastic material, and possibly mixed. - Lement to the solution obtained a plasticizer such as res.orcine, camphor, etc.
The solvent will preferably have a high boiling point and a low vapor pressure, however, sufficient for this solvent to be expelled from the material and dissipated and for the adhesive thermoplastic solution to be allowed to dry. at ordinary temperature or can be dried more quickly by subjecting it, for a short period of time, to the action of a higher temperature.
If a plasticizer is used, it should have the property of being compatible with the solvent and of remaining solid up to a temperature above 38, so that, when the solution has dried, the thermoplastic material. adhesive appears as a firm and flexible coating with a smooth surface on the surface of the blank to which it has been applied and will be, likely to become viscous and tacky if subjected to the desired temperature, either from 80 to \? 05.
As the application surface, it is possible to employ a metallic surface to which the viscous solution will adhere more weakly than to the surface of the blank, in order to be able to carry out the transfer without difficulty.
In the case where it is desired to cover with thermoplastic adhesive material only certain parts of the surface of the blank, an application surface may be employed having a contour corresponding to that of the parts of the surface of the blank. blank to cover.
After the adhesive thermoplastic solution has been transferred to the blank, it can be allowed to dry at room temperature. To hasten the drying, the blank can also be subjected to a higher temperature.
One could also proceed, for example, in the following manner: Is mixed with, the viscous solution of adhesive thermoplastic material, by dispersing it therein, a non-sticky material having a melting point lower than that of the adhesive. adhesive thermoplastic material. This non-sticky material will preferably be waterproof.
moisture, grease and oil, non-toxic, odorless, resistant to acids and will have no deleterious effect on foodstuffs, especially milk. cream and whey. This non-sticky material can be, for example, a waxy substance, preferably paraffin, having a melting point of 51 to. 5.5.
The transfer of the viscous solution having been effected, the preform is passed through a zone of elevated temperature, so that the solution dries by evaporation of all or part of the solvent.
and at the same time the paraffin melts and separates from the adhesive thermoplastic material to form a layer over it. After the blank has passed through the elevated temperature zone, it is allowed to cool sufficiently to cause the paraffin to harden.
A non-tacky coating of the adhesive thermoplastic material is thus obtained. The advantage of this way of proceeding is that it makes it possible to use an adhesive thei-mopla.stique material which becomes stuck at a relatively low temperature without there being any reason to fear that the blanks stick to each other when we have them.
stacked. It has been found that in the embodiment of the process which is to be described, the recessa.ire time for removing the blanks from the high temperature zone, and for piling them together, was sufficient for this cooling.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of a device for carrying out an embodiment of the method according to the invention, also given by way of example, this drawing also showing a blank prepared by this embodiment of the process and a container manufactured by means of this blank.
The fi-. 1 is an elevational view of this device, FIG. 2 is a plan view of a blank prepared according to this embodiment of the process; the. fig. 3 is a section along the. line 3-3 of the. fig. 3: la, fig. 4 shows, on a larger scale and in cross section, part of the device: FIG. 5 is an elevational view of a container made with the blank of the fi. 2.
As seen in fig. 1, the paper blank B is carried by a plate 7, which receives a reciprocating back and forth movement so as to bring this blank tangentially to the periphery of a rotating cylinder 8 carrying an application surface cylindrical 9 in metal, the contour of which corresponds to that of the marginal bands 14, 15,
16 of the blank which are to be covered, with the adhesive thermoplastic material. This surface 9 protrudes on the periphery of the cylinder 8.
The viscous solution of adhesive thermoplastic material, to which is mixed refined pa dispersed in this solution and, optionally a plasticizer,
is distributed over the surface 9 by a roller 10 to which this solution is supplied and on which it is uniformly distributed by the rollers 11 and 12, the latter receiving the solution from a trough 13.
The rollers 10, 11 and 12 are made of a material such that the viscous solution can adhere to it and is able to transfer it from one roll to another and to the application surface 9.
The plate 7 is arranged, relative to the cylinder 8, so that the blank found on the plate 7, and the application surface 9, are spaced from each other, while the plate is moving. relative to the cylinder, a distance substantially equal to the thickness @de the coating, viscous solution to.
apply on this blank, to allow the layer of solution which is on the application surface 9, to come into contact with the blank which is on the, plate 7, without said application surface 9 s' im prime on this draft.
This arrangement is shown schematically in FIG. 4 where the layer of solution T is indicated by a dotted area, the application surface 9 being assumed to be planar instead of being cylindrical, to simplify the figure. The space comprised between the plate 7 and the application surface 9 must be adjusted according to the viscosity of the solution and the desired thickness of the layer.
This space will be all the larger as the viscosity is higher. Likewise, if a thick layer is desired, the viscosity should be relatively large and the space greater. The thickness of the layer may vary, for example, from about 3 @ 100o of mm to about J @ 100 of mm.
The solution adheres weaker ment to the application surface 9 than to the pa pier of the blank B, so that, as the application surface 9 moves away from the plate 7, therefore from the The blank, due to the rotation of the cylinder 8, the layer of solution will leave said application surface 9, to remain on the blank located on the plate 7.
The application surface 9 of the device shown has an outline corresponding to that of the parts of the blank of FIG. 2 coated with adhesive thermoplastic material.
These parts comprise a lateral marginal band 14, an end marginal band 15, intended to come into contact with the peripheral edge of a disc 15a (fig. 5) forming the bottom of the container and another band. end margin 16 ,.
intended to allow the container to be closed by the application against each other of opposite pamties of the edges, of the filling opening. The normal position of plate 7 is shown in solid lines at A, before the plate advances with respect to cylinder 8, and in synchronism with rotation:
of this cylinder, to cause the transfer of the viscous solution from the application surface 9 to the blank. The front position of plate 7 is shown at A ', in phantom lines. From this position, the blank provided with the viscous solution is transferred to an endless conveyor belt C,
and transported in this way through an elevated temperature zone so as to evaporate the solvent and thereby dry the adhesive thermoplastic solution and melt the paraffin.
The temperature must, therefore, be at least as high as the melting point of the paraffin, to melt the paraffin and to cause the expulsion of all the solvent and its evaporation. The molten paraffin forms, as previously indicated,
a protective coating on the adhesive thermoplastic material. Although the high temperature zone can be obtained in various ways, for example in a chamber (not shown), the conveyor C being arranged so as to effect the transport of the blanks through said chamber, this zone is produced in the example shown,
by a heating device disposed above the upper strand of the conveyor. This device comprises a gas heating element composed of a series of communicating tubers 17, extending transversely to the path of the conveyor and connecting to a source of gas, the tubes having perforations facing the conveyor, so that gas flames or radiated heat are directed towards the blank carried by the conveyor.
The heating device could be of interest only to part of the conveyor, so that the blank remains long enough in the remaining part of the conveyor path so that the non-sticky material, i.e. paraffin , can be solidified.
To glue the part or parts of the blank provided with the adhesive thermoplastic coating described on another surface, or on other parts of this blank, it suffices to apply sufficient pressure and heat to make it viscous and tacky the adhesive thermoplastic material and, subsequently, to allow said material to cool to room temperature. The container of the. fi-. 5, produced by means of the blank of FIG. 2, is obtained as follows: or forms the body of the container by means of the éba.iiche and.
thereafter, a flanged disc 15cc is inserted into the end of the container body, with the rim extending outwardly and in contact with the marginal strip 15 and said parts are locked together by Rolling them together, inward and subjecting them to a temperature high enough to make it viscous and sticky. adhesive thermoplastic material.
By inserting the flanged disc 15a into the end of the container body and simultaneously with this insert, the container body is provided with an annular shoulder 22 and the disc is pressed against said shoulder, so as to prevent the movement of the disc in the body under the influence of pressure directed inward and the.
removal, by pulling out, of the locking between the rim of the disc and the said end part of the body. After the container is formed, as described, the entire inner surface is coated with a non-stick thermoplastic substance; or, if you prefer. the entire surface of the blank could be coated with said substance before the container is formed.
When the container: a. been filled, the filling opening is hermetically sealed by pressing together the opposing portions of the edges 16 of this opening, subjecting them to heat and pressure. It has been found that if one thus closes and seals the filling opening, the paraffin which melts before the. thermoplastic adhesive material is largely expelled and does not prevent good adhesion.
It was similarly found that, if the. The entire surface of the blank is coated with a non-sticky material, for example paraffin which has a lower melting point than that of the adhesive thermoplastic material, this does not prevent a good seal between the side edges 14 and 14a and between parts 15 and 15a.
It has also been found that in this case the non-sticky material, expelled from the joined surfaces, concentrates and solidifies, at the junction of said surfaces. inside the receptacle, in the form of a net which isolates the.
thermoplastic adheres to the contents of the container and thickens the sealant at all joints of the container, where such thickening is precisely useful.
