Lorsque l'aimant en- cérclamt l'induit est pourvu d'espaces inter- polaires arqués comme le montrent les fig. 3 et 4, la réaction d'induit est moins efficace comme moyen de .réglage du voltage;
représente le trajet moyen du flux isisu de chaque demi-pôle. B représente le trajet moyen du flux issu du quart de pôle exté rieur, c'est-à-dire le trajet moyen du flux compris entre le centre- @du demi-pôle et 1a pointe du pôle;
Magneto-electric machine. The present invention relates to a magneto-electric machine comprising a permanent magnet, in terms of coercive force grade, having at least four poles encircling an indult of the same number of poles, characterized in that the contour of the interpolar surfaces, of the inductor magnet is,
with respect to the armature located within. -du by course, average which would be obtained in the air for <B> If </B> partial flow joining the neighboring quarters of the polar surfaces of heavens consecutive poles of the even armature run by the normal current.
The main object of the invention is to obtain the adjustment of the. voltage and high specific output in, a small dynamo suitable for use in an electric lighting system of a bicycle or motorcycle.
In such an electric lighting system, one of the most desirable characteristics of the dynamo is that its output at its lower speed limit increases rapidly with speed up to the normal rate.
after which any increase in speed is not accompanied by a significant increase in flow.
In a dynamo having this desirable characteristic, the estimated flow rate is achieved at a relatively low speed and is held substantially constant thereafter, even with a large increase in speed.
For example, a similar 6 volt, 6 watt dynamo should start to light a 6 volt bulb, 6 watt for a speed of 5 km per hour of the bicycle, must reach its normal output for 18 or 20 km per hour. time of the bicycle and must not yet overload,
excessively the hen for 50 km per hour of the bicycle.
There are other uses besides that of a bicycle lighting dynamo, for which the characteristics in question are desirable in magnetoelectric machines.
It is known that in all dynamos some degree of voltage adjustment is obtained from the armature reaction flux and in machines of low or moderate specific rate.
some appreciable adjustment of the voltage / speed characteristic can be obtained by appropriately proportioning the armature windings to increase the effect of armature feedback ampere-turns.
In a relatively high specific throughput machine, the adjustment of the voltage / speed characteristic thus obtained is not sufficient and various other devices and procedures have been adopted to obtain the desired control of this characteristic.
In the accompanying drawings are shown several exemplary embodiments of the object of this invention.
Fig. 1 schematically shows an example of a field magnet and armature lamination of a magneto-electric machine made according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the field magnet according to FIG. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 show modified forms of the field magnet shown in fi.g. 1.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are graphs showing the characteristics of the machine respectively employing the field magnet shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4.
The fi-. 8 and 9 show another form of the field magnet having a greater number of poles and intended for a slow running dynamo.
Fig. 10 shows a theoretical flow diagram.
The characteristic curves shown in fig. 5, 6 and 7 indicate the method by which the voltage adjustment is effected by varying the inner contour of the magnet between the poles. These curves show the ac- terisitic of a typical dynamo provided alternatively with the magnets shown in fig. 1, 3 and 4.
The curves represent the voltage in volts V as a function of revolutions per minute S or V / S and the intensity in amperes <I> A in </I> function of revolutions per minute S or A / S. These three,
magnets are intended to be made of a high coercive force magnetic material such as nickel and aluminum alloys having a coercive force of 500 Gilberts / cm. The optimum dimension relation for this metal is about 3:
1, therefore the magnet is intended to have one unit in section and twelve units of average circular length.
Since there are four poles, the length of each magnet compared to its section is 3: 1, so that the metal is used under optimum conditions.
that is to say to give the maximum ratio darkens / weight of the magnet. This relationship is maintained substantially in all of the examples described here.
The magnet has in fig. 1 has a smooth circular hole, that is to say without a definite pole protrusion, but it is magnetized so as to have four magnetic poles, as has been indicated.
The magnet c shown in fig. 3 is established with arcuate interpolar spaces d extending approximately one and a half millimeters beyond the armature bore,
while the magnet e in fig. 4 has an even more defined arcuate contour between the pole protrusions and this is the preferred shape.
The dynamo with which the three magnets shown in fig. 1, 3 and 4 have been used alternately to obtain the characteristic curves shown in figs. 5,
6 and 7 was constructed with a four-pole laminated armature of the shape shown at 5 in FIG. 1, the armature being provided with a winding @ of 160 turns per pole of enamelled copper wire,
which gives a total of 640 laps. Each field magnet was permanently magnetized, prior to testing, into position in the machine, by momentarily passing through the armature windings of a current of 40 amps.
The magnetizing force thus generated was sufficient to magnetize each magnet to saturation.
It should be noted that by this method of magnetization of the magnet with its own armature, the most efficient flux concentration is obtained. The fact that the interpolar spaces of the field magnet are established so that the leakage flux of the armature is reduced,
makes the armature capable of effectively magnetizing the permanent magnet.
The characteristic curves shown in fig. 5, 6 M 7 were obtained by means of the machine switched on in each case with a bulb, 6 volts, 6 watts.
By compaxation, we will observe the curves shown in FIGS. 5, 6 and 7 that under the same conditions, the amplitude of voltage adjustment resulting from the armature reaction is determined by the interpolar contour of the magnet encircling the armature.
With a magnet having a smooth circular hole, as shown in fig. 1, the reaction effect is at its maximum, which is believed to be due to the fact that,
under these conditions the maximum armature reaction flux is forced to pass through the magnet encircling the armature and thus reduce the inducing effect of the flux of the permanent magnet.
When the magnet engages the armature is provided with arcuate interpolar spaces as shown in fig. 3 and 4, the armature reaction is less effective as a means of voltage control;
therefore, within the limits of a born machine, the flight / speed characteristic under a given load can be determined as necessary by determining the shape of the interpolar contour of the permanent magnet encircling the armature.
In the case of the magnet a, shown in FIG. 1, having a smooth circular hole, the reaction effect was so intense that at full load the magnet underwent permanent demagnetization and loss of pole definition or pole shift. This state was not encountered in the case
dies magnets .represented in fig. 3 and 4 and it was found that between. the, first extreme condition, in which the reaction effect de-magnetizes the magnet, and the opposite extreme state, in which the reaction effect has very little influence on the voltage regulation, one can determine a state in which the,
The flow characteristics obtained are suitable for the purpose required.
The field magnet. shown in fig. 8 -and 9 shows a practical form of a magnet for a low speed multipolar dynamo exhibiting the characteristics described above.
Fig. 10 shows a theoretical diagram of the armature flux. The lines of magnetic flux which are shown are obtained, assuming they remain in the air. From the centers of the poles, we have represented the lines of division, radial X, while
represents the average path of the isisu flux of each half-pole. B represents the mean path of the flux coming from the outer quarter pole, that is to say the mean path of the flux between the center of the half-pole and the point of the pole;
B is the limit of conforma, Lion for the contour of the interpolar space of the inducing magnet at:
beyond which the adjustment of the voltage / speed characteristic is insufficient. The hatched part between the armature bore and this line B represents the surface in which the interpolar shape,
should be chosen to obtain the desired character. Line C represents an interpolar shape suitable for the field like, this line being in the hatched part. '
In explaining the results obtained in practice and as shown in the graphs, the theory has been advanced, as specified above, that the smaller the air space formed in the hatched surface, the more the armature reaction flux can neutralize the flux of the permanent magnet or oppose it instead of passing p,
ar the air space of the interpolar space, -and more this armature is capable of reaction to act on the voltage / speed characteristic.
It should be noted, in addition, that the relatively narrow poles in the magnet of, fig. 4 are adopted to minimize. the distortion of the flow path due to the rotation of the armature.
It is suggested that the more concentrated the poles, the smaller the disturbance in the inducing magnet due to the armature reaction.
The extent to which the pole area can be reduced is limited, however, by considerations of flux density in the air gap, which in turn affects the flow rate.
The foliage shape of the armature shown is a compromise with regard to the length of the blade tip; the pole tip must, on the one hand, be as long as possible to form a bridge between the poles and prevent the opening of the magnetic circuit of the magnet, but, on the other hand, its length must be reduced to facilitate winding to the machine.
In practice, the armature does not necessarily form a bridge on the polar tips, but the material of the magnet has such a high coercive force that there is no appreciable loss coming from the opening of this circuit. magnetic.
