Si le bâtiment se meut transversalement à la houle, il couvre deux versants de houle descendants et deux ascendants, de sorte qu'il y a de chaque côté deux séries de flotteurs qui montent et deux séries de flotteurs qui descendent. La réaction d'inertie de chaque flotteur étant égale à la poussée qu'il reçoit de l'air comprimé, on doit- admettre que la moitié du poids-force de la charpente est équi libré par l'inertie des flotteurs qui descen dent;
Movable building. There are already known constructions, in particular road vehicles, which are provided with elastic devices or oscillation dampers by means of which the running elements of these vehicles are connected: to their frames so that they allow movements verticals of these or ganes relative to these frames. These devices have the drawback of comprising elastic members which support the entire load of the chassis, so that they must be very heavy and bulky so that their elastic reaction corresponding to a relatively small deviation of the running surface is negligible. before their initial tension.
Or, they must be so inflexible, if their dimensions are admissible, that their elastic reaction is of the same order of magnitude as their initial tension, which means that the frame is then subjected to so great forces that they give it oscillations of too short a period.
The object of the present invention is to obviate this drawback, in particular in cases where the unevenness of the running surface of a vehicle are relatively very large, for example equal to more than half the height of the center of the vehicle. gravity of the vehicle above a supporting surface. plane.
Its object is a building that can be moved on the surface of at least one of the solid and liquid parts of the terrestrial spheroid, comprising a rigid frame and several feet that can rest on said surface and supporting this frame. This building is characterized in that it further comprises hollow cylinders in a number at least equal to that of the feet and fixed to the frame, a pipe with which these cylinders communicate and which is part of this sloping tank, a fluid gas compressed in said pipe, in each cylinder a piston whose rod is connected to one of the feet, at least one movable support for each foot,

Fig. 12 is a view from the left of FIG. 11, in elevation, and the. fig. 13 is. a plan view and in section along 13-13 of the fi-. 11.
The building shown in Figs. 1 <L 3 and 5 to 8 comprises a rigid frame 2 having two lateral parts 3 and 4 in the form of parallelepipeds, rigid composite beams 5 joining these two parts from above and a hollow body 7 joining them together. from the bottom. The lower part 8 of this body is covered with sheets which delimit the useful volume of the building and form aero dynamic fuselages 9 and 10 at the front and at the rear.
In parts 3 and 4 of the frame are mounted slides 11, in light metal frame, which can move vertically and are shown in detail in fig. â> il 8. These slides support, at their lower part, the bearings 13 of hollow cylindrical floats 12.
When the vessel is stopped, these floats displace a weight of water equal to their weight and that of the sloping tank by submerging themselves to part of their radius, but they are provided, at their periphery, with partitions 1.4 which form compartments open to the outside and contiguous to each other in which the air is compressed by an inertia effect of the water when the building has a speed and the floats 12 a rolling motion on the water.
The building is then lifted, and, at a certain speed, its weight is entirely supported by the compressed air in the compartments and by the. vertical hydrodynamic reaction, the hydrostatic reaction then becoming almost zero, being reduced to what corresponds to the volume of the thin sheets forming the partitions 14.
The advantage (the that is. That very little energy is expended against the water on the condition that the floats 12, then become wheels, can remain almost on the surface of the water even when there is waves as shown in Fig. 4.
For this purpose. each slider 11 com takes four vertical uprights lla joined to each other by stiffening bars 22 oblique. They have a rigid lower floor 16. rectangular, in the middle of which is. fixed the rod 15 of a piston 18 working in a cylinder 19. Below the floor 16, the frame of the slide 11 forms a yoke 17 which carries the journals 29 of a cylindrical and rotary float 12. There are forty of these floats in the example described and their eighty upper journals together carry all the load of the sloping tank 2 and of the slides 11. The frame 2 is supported by compressed air introduced into the cylinders 19 by a pipe 23 connected to a pump not shown by a pipe 25.
Each cylinder dre 19 is fixed to an upper -stage of the frame 2 by bars 20 and 21 which enter the interior of the para frames, llélipipédiques which form the slides 11. The bars 11a which form the vertical edges of these slides can roll against and between rollers 47 pivoted eight in number in the lower floor of the sloping tank 2 and rollers 48 pivoted in a frame located on an upper floor thereof, at 46.
The pipe 23 goes around, from the top, the frame 2. Tubes 24 ensure direct communication between various of its points to equalize the air supply through the pipe 25. The latter is provided with two valves 26 and 27. The first is a safety valve which opens by itself when the pressure becomes excessive; the valve 27 is shaped so as to be able to admit air into the pipe 25; it can be placed in communication, by means not shown, with a pump 65 shown schematically. The piston 66 of this pump is connected, by a rod 64, to a float 63 located under the floor of part 8 and between parts 3 and 4 of the frame.
This float is at such a height that it floats on the water when the vessel is stopped so that the pump 65 can replace the machines which ordinarily supply the pipe 23 with compressed air, the waves of a port causing the vessel to oscillate. float. These valves being small, part of the air can be allowed to escape from the cylinders 19 so that the lower ends of these cylinders descend to a distance from the floors 16 equal to at least half the height of the cylinders. waves from the harbor.
We see in fig. 5 that each hollow body 12 is provided on its face facing the interior of the building, with a cylindrical neck 29a to which is fixed a toothed wheel 28 integral with one of the journals 29 of this body 12. The wheel 28 meshes with a pinion 30 keyed on the shaft of a bevel pinion 30a which meshes with a bevel pinion 31 'itself keyed on a vertical shaft 32. These toothed wheels are housed in a housing 13a carried by the yoke 17. L 'shaft 32 passes through this housing as well as a bevel gear 35 mounted between two fixed bearings.
It is provided, over its entire part which slides in the pinion 35, with a longitudinal key 33 which can slide in a corresponding internal groove of the pinion 35. The latter meshes with a pinion 36 whose shaft 37 is connected to a motor. not re presented.
In the middle of its external face, each slide 11 carries a rack 38 fixed to the bars 22 by means of two vertical rails 39 and 40 (FIG. 8). This rack meshes with a wheel 41 on which is keyed a pinion 42 which meshes with a wheel 43. A cam 44, keyed on the wheel 43, has four symmetrically curved ramps arranged two by two; it is clamped between the ends of two strong iron beams 45, the other ends of which are fixed to the beam 46 of an upper floor of the frame 2.
This therefore constitutes a mechanism for returning the slides relative to the frame and vice versa, a mechanism whose equilibrium position depends on the quantity of compressed air that it has in the cylinders, at the same time. </B> ps than the timing of the cams 44.
The embodiment of FIG. 4 differs from the building described above only by the fact that its <B> Il </B> slides are guided by their rollers in an inclined direction which is for example normal to the maximum inclination of medium swells wavelength and height.
This tilt decreases the transverse components of the forces applied to the bucket slurries as they ascend a wave, but creates a transverse component in the opposite direction of the vertical load and both of these components can cancel each other out for certain speeds. of the building and certain swell inclinations. Since there is no sliding movement when the water is level, there is an advantage in giving the slides against the waves.
The other functions which will be described are the same for the embodiments of the fi-. ? and 4.
The position shown in fi-. 2, 5 and. 6 corresponds to half of the stroke of the pistons and is determined by the quantity of compressed air introduced into the cylinders 19, such quantity as the cam 44 is. in its equilibrium position. The. Pressure in the. pipe and: the cylinders is alois equal to the quotient of. weight of frame 2 by the total area of all pistons 19.
When the building moves next. a direction which makes an angle between zero and forty-five degrees with the direction of the propagation of the swell, there are always as many bodies 12 which must go up as bodies 12 which must descend at the same time, the most marked swells not exceeding. never 160 meters from peak to peak and the. distance from the first to the last body 12 being here 125 m ('> - tres. In this case, the compressed air passes freely from the cylinders 19 corresponding to the bodies 12 which rise in the cylinders corresponding to the bodies 12 which descend.
Strength. motor is constantly transmitted to the bodies 12 rolling on the water thanks to the shaft 32 sliding in the pinion 35, but the means of transmission of the motor to this pinion @ can comprise a friction clutch mechanism or a differential gear allowing irregularities in the angular speed of the bodies 12 resulting from the fact that they increase their immersion when they climb a slope and decrease or nullify it when they descend.
Each time a piston 18 deviates from its middle position, the cam shaft 44 only turns a fraction of a turn even for the maximum amplitude of the movement. The ramps of the cam 44 then force the beams 45 to flex and move away from each other.
The dimensions of the beams 45 are calculated in such a way that their elastic reaction, transmitted reduced to the rack in the form of a vertical restoring force, determines a period of oscillation of ten to twenty seconds, for example, to the part of the load supported by the piston, so that the whole frame 2 would have a vertical oscillation of this same period in the event that all the beam springs 45 act on it simultaneously in the same direction.
In the example described, the forty bodies 1.2 weigh - together about two thousand tons; they therefore share a load of about eight thousand tons. If there is only one rack per body 12, the load that a rack causes to oscillate has a value of two hundred tonnes less the weight of a slide. In truth, we can create a vacuum in the bodies 12 to benefit from the aerostatic thrust on these large hermetic envelopes, and which will be worth about thirty tons, but this only compensates for one tenth of the total weight of the slides.
Assuming two hundred tons for the ehart; e of a piston, we find that each rack must be subjected to. a force of 14 \ 290 kilograms-force per meter deviation from its equilibrium position when a vertical oscillation of 7.5 seconds is imposed. For waves 13 meters high, the maximum amplitude will be 6.50 meters and the maximum force 92.892 tons force. We notice that this force is lower than the. half the 200 ton load of a piston.
The suspension is. therefore much softer than in all the known devices of road vehicles, thanks to the fact that it is the compressed air which supports the load and not the return members.
The beams 45 tend to create a depression when there is not enough air in the cylinders 19 and, if not, an overpressure relative to the pressure required in the middle position. It is thus understood that, when the beams 45 act mainly in the direction of an overpressure, they can determine the opening of the valve 26 and thus prevent an excess of air raising the frame 2 by an undue amount. .
It should be noted that we do not have to make the frame 2 as rigid as the hull of a ship of the same length, because it is supported at all points by where it is attached to the pipe, and that ci is supported uniformly by all its. upper internal surface, as explained below. But it is necessary for this, although the waves in a port are small, that a certain amount of compressed air remains in the cylinders 19 when the vessel is in the harbor, so that the lower ends of these cylinders do not touch. floors 16.
For this, a small motor-pump unit must constantly remain in action, and it may be the assembly consisting of the float 63 and the pump 65, which will be controlled by the port valves passing under the building, and will supply the valve 27.
The latter could, for the same purpose, be connected to pumps which would be actuated by the oscillations of the slides 11 by being connected to them for example by means of shafts 32 or wheels 41 or 43, and this could also constitute the installation. compression standard for building trips.
This shows that the installation described could be used to take the energy of the swell to deliver it to the coast by an electric cable. For this purpose, the frame should be more rigid and could be anchored a few kilometers from the coast. The air delivered by the valve 26 could be used to operate an engine with a dynamo. The feet of the building could then be smooth and be rigidly fixed to the slides. For the same purpose, the shafts 32 or the racks 38 could act on a rotating shaft through the intermediary of ratcheting mechanisms, this shaft having a flywheel and actuating a dynamo.
It will be understood, from the following considerations, the relationship between the rigidity that the frame must have and the conditions of use or operation of the building.
In the extreme case where the vessel would have a speed of 100 meters per second and would operate on a swell 100 meters long and 13 meters high, a descending float would have to fall 13 meters in half a second. if it were to remain in contact with water, then the free fall would be only 1,225 meters.
In reality, the fall is faster than the free fall, because the float is subjected not only to its weight-force and to the return members, but also to a thrust from top to bottom by the compressed air; this thrust is equivalent to the part of the total load that the sup float carries in still water and this part is here worth about four times its weight. This is not enough to apply the float to the water during the descent. Its immersion will first be reduced and then canceled, while that of the rising floats will be increased. The hydrodynamic resistance will therefore remain practically independent of the size of the swell, but one may wonder what the effect will be on the framework.
If the vessel moves transversely to the swell, it covers two descending and two ascending swell sides, so that on each side there are two sets of rising floats and two sets of descending floats. The inertia reaction of each float being equal to the thrust which it receives from the compressed air, we must admit that half of the weight-force of the frame is balanced by the inertia of the floats which descend;
the other half is statically balanced by the rising floats, the rise of which keeps the pressure in the pipe constant. This last effect of the ascending floats occurs with a certain delay as regards those of them which are at the bottom of a slope where they increase their immersion because of their inertia,
but this is compensated by those of them who reach a ridge and then continue their upward movement a little beyond that ridge by virtue of their kinetic energy. The sloping tank is therefore never in the case of a co-boat which must be able to be lifted by one of its ends. or only through its middle without breaking.
On the other hand, if we want to extract energy from the swell coming for example from one end of the building to the other, it will be lifted successively by all the points of its length with a force precisely. equal to that which one wants to transmit to the dynamo, so that the vertical rigidity must. be calculated accordingly.
In the example described, where the pistons are integral with the slides, the resultant of the forces due to the uniform pressure in the pipe integral with the frame is di erected from bottom to top since part of the surface to which is applied this pressure is formed by the upper faces of the pistons. A different case is mentioned below.
Figs. 9 and 10 show a variant of the return device. Each slide <B> II. </B> has four racks arranged along its vertical ridges and formed by railroad tracks llb which roll against gaets 47 and 48. These racks mesh. with four wheels 41a each of which operates a return mechanism similar to that of the fi-. 6.
Figs. 11 to 13 show a device allowing the floats to tilt transversely when the. spread of the. swell is not parallel to the longitudinal axis of the building. Each body 12 is surrounded by a metal frame 49 in which are mounted the bearings 50 of the pivots 29 on two of its opposite sides and, in the middle of its two other sides, other bearings 51 in which can rotate lons. <B> 52 </B> having their common axis perpendicular to. that of the pivots 29. These journals 52 are fixed to a frame 53 which surrounds the upper half of the body 12 and which is integral with the slide 11.
The frame 49 is configured to also support the bearings 54 of a bevel gear 55 meshing with a wheel 56 keyed to the body 12.
A shaft 57 of the pinion 55 is connected by a shaft 59 and two cardan joints 58 and 60 to a shaft 61 which can slide and rotate in its bearings 62 fixed to the slide 11 and receiving its movement in the same way as the shaft 32 of fig. 5. A compression chamber, not shown, may be provided to increase the volume of the pipeline 23 and the cylinders 19 for cases where the vessel is smaller than the length of the waves or is traveling in a direction which does. an angle greater than 45 "with that of the wave propagation.
This prevents the pressure from reaching an excessive value when all or most of the pistons are lifted simultaneously. This chamber also decreases the loss of air through valve 26.
A wind coming from the port side results in a downward thrust of the sorting floats and a lightening of the port floats. The return springs that are. the beams 45 of each other are armed in opposite directions. The reaction of the water on the starboard floats increases, creating torque causing the vessel to turn. This effect can: be combated in various ways. You can increase the speed of the floats when loaded, maneuver a rudder. The effect.
, (Tiroscopique des floats tends moreover <B> to </B> to oppose any change of direction by aa-issuant in the same direction as the central trifugal force applied to the whole building.
Since, however, the building must be able to be governed <B> p </B> by one of the aforementioned means of re-erection or by the displacement of a mass on transverse rails, the frame 2 will be subjected to the central force. fuge which will tilt its floors towards the outside even. if the floats inside the curve described are more submerged than the others. The effect of inclination will be determined by the force of the beams 45, therefore by the period of oscillation accepted for the calculation of these beams.
To compensate for this more or less completely inclined effect, one or more giroscopes can be mounted on the rigid frame. For example, each float will have. its own motor having a shaft parallel to the pivots 29 but rotating in reverse thereof to. higher speed and equipped with a flywheel. Each of these gyroscopic flywheels will tend to tilt the frame so that its floors are normal to the resultant of gravity and of the trifugal force.
This can be done in the same way in electric locomotives fitted with the same compressed air suspension device, suitable for. Much less unevenness, the rotors of their engines constituting significant giroscopic masses.
If necessary, the vessel will navigate in zig zags, slowing down or almost stopping to change direction, if it is not equipped with such giroscopes or if it has to describe arcs of small radius of curvature. The minimum radius of curvature of the bends without slowing down the travel speed is determined by the force of the beams 45 and the maximum slope that can be accepted for the floors. For a period of vertical oscillation of about ten seconds and a speed of one hundred meters per second, the slope of the floors will remain less than ten degrees for radii of curvature of about 10 kilometers. This slope still depends on the width of the building.
A rudder can be constituted by a float with cells like the floats 12 or smaller mounted in a yoke integral with a slide similar to the slides 11 but in the form of a cylindrical tower capable of rotating around an axis parallel to its vertical slide or oblique, or, rather, the float would have its yoke 17 mounted so as to be able to turn under the floor 16 of a rectangular slide. This rudder would be placed at the rear of the building between the two rows of floats 12.
Its yoke would be connected by rods or chains to a lever to a disc mounted further forward under the expensive plane 8 at the end of a vertical shaft crossing this floor and leading to the actuators.
It is known that a rudder acting at the rear of a building creates a torque opposite to that which is: due to centrifugal force and we see that this effect would also be obtained in this case. The most important advantages of the described building are the possibility of sailing the largest waves at speeds between two hundred and more than three. hundred kilometers an hour and the almost complete absence of roll and pitch.
As the support pressure is the same everywhere, such oscillatory movements can only be due to forces transmitted to the frame by the return mechanisms, and we have seen that these forces will never be more than a fraction. of the part of the load affected by a difference in level of water below or above the mean level. In addition, the forces which will occur in a given direction on a part of the building will be all the more brief: as the building goes faster than an ordinary ship.
If the gear ratio is 8 and the vertical oscillation period 7.5 seconds, the roll and pitch effects will be sixteen times less than in an ordinary boat and a double period of 7.5 can be allowed, which enables the beams 45 to be made four times weaker than indicated in the example described, and reduces the effects. pitch and roll to the sixty-fourth part of what they are now.
Note that pitch and roll will be of a special nature. Indeed, if for example all the right-hand return springs are suddenly armed in one direction and those -de left in the opposite direction, the frame is subjected to a longitudinal axis torque. She can't. incline to obey this torque that by also inclining the pistons of the two edges on the same side, that of the less sunken pistons, and for this will turn around a longitudinal axis of symmetry of the building located at the average level of the waterline.
As long as this couple has time to initiate an oscillation, the period of this will be a little longer than that of the vertical oscillations.
A side wind would produce a similar deformation: of the building, as would the centrifugal force during a turn.
If a hurricane wind is applied on the lateral surface of about 4000 square meters and has a speed of 40 meters / second, it exerts a force of 550 00 (_1 kilograms if this surface is a thin plane, in the case of which the force is greater than on a set of more or less rounded surfaces.
Now, the total return force of the forty racks is worth 571,600 kilograms per meter deviation from the equilibrium position, according to the example considered for the period of 7.5 seconds; if the wind acts at. an average height of twenty, ours, and if the pistons are twenty meters from the ïongitutudinal axis, the gap due to the wind will be:
EMI0008.0007
The slope is thus 0.965 / 40, or?, 41 ô. If the pistons are only ten meters from the axis. the slope is still only 9.65 rn. corresponding to an angle of less than 6 degrees.
We can therefore admit a greater period of vertical oscillation.
As regards the roll due to a swell coming from the side, it should also be noted that, the speed of propagation of strong swells being between ten and sixteen meters per second, an impulse given in a direction to port will be followed, less than four seconds later, by an impulse opposite to starboard which will cancel the first if the period is approximately 16 seconds.
The return members and springs could be of any other type known per se.
The pistons could be located outside the slides. They could also be connected to these via levers or gears. reduction gear ratio, so that the sliding resistance of the lubricated pistons, which is a function of the speed, is reduced, if necessary. In this case, for the same pressure as in fi-. 5, the diameter of the cylinders would only be increased in proportion to the square root of the reduction gear ratio.
In the case mentioned above, where the building is intended to extract energy from the swell, it must however still be movable so that it can be brought to the place of its anchorage and be oriented in accordance with the directions; various swell. If it does not include locomotor organs, it will be. set up and oriented by towing.
The beams 45 could act on their cams by means of rollers. Their initial tension, (it can be zero, influences the. Determination of the curvature of the ramps, either. That one imposes a return torque proportional to the angle of deviation, or that one wishes to on the contrary, a function more or less strongly increasing than that of this angle.
