Chacun de éléments 205, par sa résistance au passa_,,e du liquide, entraîne une chute de pression plus grande que celle obtenue le long de chaque tube générateur qu'il dessert: on ,i#- snre ainsi une égale division du liquide Pri- v ové dans chacun ries longs tubes ?0(;

qu'en d'autres parties (les murs latéraux les tubes horizontaux < l11 sureliauffeur alter nent (lu sommet à la lisse avec espaces entre eux d'un diamètre du tube et d'une largeur éo-ale à celle de la. chambre. l;

Forced circulation sapper generator. The present invention a. for object a forced circulation steam generator. applicable to locomotives. self-propelled. vehicles and ships.
This steam generator has a vaporizer element. a separator. an over heater, a water heater and an air re heater, and it is characterized in that these different exchangers are arranged on two superimposed horizontal passages re linked by a short vertical passage. in which the hot gases circulate, the element being porizer. consisting of a set of tubes lining the walls of the lower passage. the other elements being placed on the gas path in the upper passage.
Some particular embodiment <of the generator which is the subject of the invention may have the particularities listed in the following: In one of these execution forms. the liquid enters the water heater located where the gases have already cooled. From there, it circulates in several conduits presenting a resistance to the passage of the fluid. so as to equalize the division of the liquid between them. and each connected to a portion of the vaporizer element.
The tubes of this element are arranged to form the walls, the floor, the roof of the fireplace. They are, on all sides, subjected to the heat of the hearth. The assembly is formed of lengths of substantially contiguous tubes. in contact with each other. In this way, the outer face is only connected to a gas-tight casing and to an insulating substance of light weight, without it being necessary to provide a refractory wall.
The weight of the whole and the space occupied are relatively. small. The heat reserve is reduced to the thin walls of the small tubes forming the heat-absorbing surface and to the very small amount of fluid they contain, such a heat reserve is therefore instantly usable.
The small, long, continuous tubes form flat walls on at least five side faces of the fireplace and some portions of their lengths pass through the stream of the hot gaseous products of combustion to increase uninterrupted heat transmission. in the lengths of the assembly as they result from the renal arrangement. Beyond the Home. they constitute an additional length exposed to the transverse flow of gases.
In said embodiment, the fluid circulates in the vaporisateuY element in a constantly ascending manner. He never switches to. a lower level, which prevents the formation of vapor pockets at high points at low speeds, vapor pockets which are recognized to be a cause of danger. gunshots and damage to the generator, causing probable interruption of service with increased maintenance costs.
Due to the presence of a multiplicity of tubes connected in parallel and the reduction in diameter for a large production of steam. the tubes are obtained by curvature, so that each of them can be placed to receive the same amount of heat from the hot gases by radiation and convection despite the variations in intensity of the source (the heat along the path of the products combustion from the burner to the gas outlet.
The tubes are preferably assembled by welding and form a flat foz-er wall. They are curved to present a horizontal part crossing the current of hot gases and form a wall at the end of the fireplace opposite the burner. The upper rows are supported by the most bases in the gas zones of different temperatures and arranged in a different manner, but appropriate for the steam producing surfaces. the superheater and the economiser.
The gunshots are avoided by the arrangement of the tubes and by the action of the auxiliary adjustment means, in order to ensure that the tubes of the vaporizer element are kept moist inside.
The superheating of the steam is produced by a minimum (the area of. Tubes without shots. This is achieved by the removal of the non-vaporized liquid before the fluid enters the superheater and by the arrangement. of the superheater tubes relative to the other tubes so that radiant heat from the fireplace does not reach them, while the gases approaching the superheater are hot enough, but not too hot, to achieve the desired maximum steam temperature when most tubes are effectively licked by hot gases.
Such an embodiment has been constructed and subjected to long and hard tests which have been satisfactory. It can deliver 10.001l hg of steam per hour, weigh 10,000 hg and occupy a space of 2 m (i: 5 (the top. 1 m 40 wide and fi m long.

The large lono, uour of one of these iu- hes generators is divided vil portions ii through which the fluid circulates but always horizontally and from bottom to top. Steam forms in them without creating pockets and each of them has a special shape and place, so as to form walls of metal while receiving the same amount of heat at the same time as an equal supply of liquid and , consequently, supplying under equal and desired conditions the quantity of steam sought.
The first portion of the length of each of the five generator tubes is bent to form a planar layer having the full length of the hearth. One of these five tubes is shown in fig. 24: the input end is connected to the output of the resistor element 205.
The outlet end of the first portion of each of the generator tubes, constituting a part of the hearth floor, is linked to the inlet end of the second portion which forms part of the flat walls. and the tube bundle 228. The connections are made by bringing each tube towards the front of the fireplace from the bottom up to a side portion of the tubes at different levels in the side wall, as seen at 211, 2l2, 213 . 214 and 215 (fig. 10). The diameter of the tube is enlarged to allow steam to form.
The second portion of the length of a generator tube is suitably shaped to line one side wall, the rear face and the other side wall. The curvatures of the tubes are of zero radius: they lead the tube to a higher level as many times (kills this. Is necessary for faith-mer a fifth of the height of the hearth as seen in fig. ??. To form a bundle of tubes at the rear of the fireplace and between its walls, the tube clia- ct in the height is bent to pass several times transversely through the fireplace from one side wall to the other as seen in fig. 10 and 23.
When a tube is curved, at the end of a side wall. to rise from one level to the immediately higher level, it is rae.eordé by a return elbow of zero radius of curvature which does not have a part projecting to the outside, in order to allow contact of the adjacent portions of tubes. Such return elbows will be described in detail below. Thus is formed in this place a wall of bare tubes which does not require any refraction and which absorbs the heat from the hearth to vaporize the liquid, the mixture of liquid and vapor always rising to a higher level or flowing horizontally. but never going up and down.
The third portion of the length of each generator tube is bent for mer, as shown in fig. 10, in 230, the roof of the hearth. The total length of the tubes in this part is less than the length of the hearth as seen in fig. 10 and 25. The second and third portions of the length of the tube are connected by further elbows at the front end of a front wall and through the front end of the roof. Each tube is then curved out of the plane of the roof and above it, on each side of the vertical cylindrical collector separator 23? placed above the fireplace.
The adjacent tube lengths in the side walls are joined at the front end of the wall by a return elbow with zero inside radius as shown in fig. 12 to 15. The lengths of tubes 221 and 222 are brought into contact over their entire length: the end of a tube at one end is welded to the end of a tube adjacent to the same end with deposition of the metal. solder at the ends to fill the V-shaped spaces on either side. on either side of the point of tangency of the tubes, as indicated in \? \? 3 and 224.
The weld metal is. also extended through the point of tangency, so as to prevent the two tubes from separating, as shown at 225. The resulting outer contour of the combined tube ends is then (the nature (the two semicircles with a rectangle between them (fig. 13) and the tubes are welded in ?? ï with a cap 22û whose contour is equal to that of the ends (the tubes joined together as indicated.

The superheated steam leaves the outlet manifold through tube 44 and is directed to operating members such as a turbine or the like.
The horizontal flat layers of the overheater absorb heat and thus form a protective surface for the walls in the gas passage, formed by the gas chamber 45 where the gas flow from the first lower passage into the hearth is reversed in direction, so as to equalize the flow of hot gases on all the tubes of the superheater.
Each of the many superheater tubes is continuous between the inlet manifold and the outlet manifold and curved in a horizontal plane to form part of a bundle of tubes in the gas passage and also part of the wall of the gas passage. gas on the two opposite side faces as well as. the end of it. So what is it? shown in fig. 27, each tube passes through the gas passage eight times with return elbows at the end of each straight cross section.
Immediately above and below. there is another similarly curved tube. but in the opposite direction, so as to fill the part of the length of the side walls not occupied by the tubes adjacent to the upper and lower levels, but also extending elsewhere on the portions of the length of the side wall which are occupied by adjacent tubes and the same for the final wall.
Thus the fi- iial wall and the rear parts of the two lateral walls of the gas passage have. superheater Iiorizontauz tubes in contact forming a continuous metal wall for the gases,
that in other parts (the side walls the horizontal tubes <l11 superheater alternate (read top to the beam with spaces between them of a diameter of the tube and a width equal to that of the chamber. l;
11 lias. one (, of the series of horizontal supercharger tubes rests on the bottom of the throttle passage and is arranged to support the return elbows of the part which passes through the gas passage, so that the others are outlined and their horizontal projections cut off, in this way the whole superheater is itself supported by the bottom.
3by arranging the superheater tubes horizontally at different levels between the vertical inlet and outlet manifolds, any liquid in the superheater, when the generator is started for example, will remain at the bottom of the manifolds and fill the tubes. from the lower level. leaving the upper tubes entirely free for steam and thus prevent a shot from the superheater tubes that would occur if a pocket of water prevented the flow of steam from passing, while still allowing it through the other tubes not having no water pockets.
In this superheater, the hot gases cannot damage any tube because each of them is either full of liquid. is cooled internally by a stream of steam and as the liquid in a lower level tube evaporates, the superheater acts temporarily.
like a water tube boiler, partly until the liquid has been completely and safely vaporized, while the rest of the superheater works as a superheater and finally all the tubes work as a superheater.
The arrangement of the superheater is shown schematically in fig. 28, in which one? '. 3? is the separator supplied with saturated steam to the vertical inlet manifolds 41 through tube 34U. Horizontally bent superheater tubes are shown at? 4? and provide the vertical outlet collector 43 with super-

This 44 "valve is held or green until all liquid glow has disappeared from the superheater. It should be noted that each of the many tubes in the double layer of the superheater is bent (fib. 2î) so as to constitute no only a bundle of tubes in the gas path. but also protection of the walls of the gas passage and ensuring that each tube has equal contact with the gases at the same temperature in the different sections of the gas stream. equal overheating.
The location of the superheater and its surface are such that the outlet temperature, steam cannot be excessive. whatever the pace.
The water heater tubes are horizontal like the superheater and vaporizer element tubes and each tube is bent in a similar fashion. Parts of the. length of a tube form a transverse bundle through the gas passage, other parts form portions of side walls and other parts constitute a support for the tubes of a higher level. the whole being supported by the bottom.
Some of the real water heater tubes are shown on the. fi * 26 (one in solid lines and another in dotted lines for clarity). They are curved in a series of loops between the vertical inlet manifold 200 and the vertical outlet manifold 31 (1. Two single loops extend longitudinally, parallel to the gas flow, and two multi-loops;
are arranged crosswise. constituting the parts resting on the two side walls. Such curved tubes are supported by those below, so that each of them is also licked by the gas and the meter temperature. In this way, the liquid supplied by each will also be heated.

It is seen that the fireplace is gas-tight and can withstand an internal gas pressure considerably above that of the external air pressure.
In the front of the generator there is a burner with an adjustable longitudinal position, the head of which 265 receives the atomizing oil and steam supply tubes. The burner opens to them in the center of a refractory ring 258. Above the twin-spinner is provided a rectangular opening 271 through which the air heated in the air heater arrives to the burner. comprising tubes through which pass the exhaust gases from the combustion of the steam generator which are discharged through a flue 283.
This air heater, as is evident, is at the end of the gas circuit. It is placed above the burner. Air enters it at? 84 and passes through the air heater tube bundle \ .382 and goes directly. to the burner air chamber or air box, so that the heat, gained by the air in its passage through the air reheater, is not lost and the resistance is small due to the short air path from heater to burner.
To ensure that the generator runs smoothly, adjustment members are fitted to check that the steam generator is working at its best. producing superheated steam at any rate demanded by the steam engine, without gunfire or damage to any part. The heat reserve is so low that it is immediately possible to modify the quantities of steam required for the operation of the engine. This adjustment is automatic: inactive and controlled by the flow of steam supplied or drawn off.
before starting, the steam generator is filled with water up to the stop and throttle valve? 44 '(fig. -28) which is closed and the valve open air 2.14 "which is also closed after filling or opened only slightly.
This prevents gunshot from any part when the burner begins to operate and before the flow of liquid and vapor is established through the interior of the tubes. It is indeed necessary to prevent the heating of a tube which is dry inside and through which there is no passage or insufficient passage of fluid to absorb enough heat and maintain it at a temperature. low enough to be harmless.
The operation of the auxiliary organs is regulated, on the one hand, according to the flow rate of the supplied fear and. on the other hand. so as to ensure an excess of liquid in the fluid mixture supplied by the tubes of the vaporizing element. The liquid level in the separator acts as a means of control to maintain the proper ratios between fuel flow rates and liquid feed key.
In front of the end where the burner is located is placed. on a frame 385, a platform? 8 (i which carries an auxiliary turbine 287 driving, by means of suitable gears, a fan? 88 supplying air to the. air 84, as well as the reciprocating feed pump 289 providing liquid (the work to the generator and oil pumps 9) and 390 ′, respectively for lubrication and for fuel oil.
An auxiliary fan? 91, powered by an independent motor 292 (the turbine? 87, provides start-up air for a gas pilot burner to which is added.
an automatic ignition assembly not shown. The pressure is immediately reached in the steam generator. the steam is supplied to the turbine 87 to operate the feed pump 89. the fuel oil pump 290 and the fan 88. A variation in speed (la.
turbine? 87 produces corresponding variations, weight of the flow rate of the working liquid and that of the fuel and (the air.
The heat transmitted. vaporization and urcliauffe are modified. The speed of the auxiliary turbine is automatically controlled by the quantity of superheated steam released. After the auxiliary conductive turbine a. started to operate and the superheater has lost its initial start-up liquid by vaporization and vapor is circulating through the superheater and liquid is supplied to the tubes of the vaporizer element to replace the vapor formed, the separator prevents any liquid from reaching the superheater.
To ensure that all the tubes of the vaporizer element are wet, the liquid supply is proportionate to the supply of fuel and air with an excess over the rate of vaporization. In this way, an excess of liquid is always obtained in the separator. This excess liquid is constantly removed from the separator.
The continued build-up of excess liquid in the vaporizer element and withdrawal thereof from the separator has the effect of maintaining a certain amount of liquid in the separator at a level determined by the setting. Variations in this level automatically control the surface area of the overflow liquid.
The tubular connection of the separator placed on the path of the hot gases must be protected against gunfire. To achieve this, means such as those shown in fi * 19 and? 0 can be used, in which the connecting tube? 9? is enclosed in a sleeve? 93 spaced from the tube? 9? and closed at both ends.
>? n cooling fluid. such that the excess liquid in the separator? 3? circulates in said space.
The generator which has just been described has the advantage that the steam is supplied in a reduced time of the order of a few seconds and with high efficiency, whatever the key variations a.llnre. The volume and weight (this generator make it usable in the event that only internal combustion machines appear to be suitable for adoption.
Until now, it has not yet been possible to construct a practical and flexible energy-generating unit. at high efficiency. dimensions and weight small enough to compete with internal combustion machines, which however. require special and expensive fuels.
At present. the production of fear requires. indeed. an equipment. InipGr- tant comprising large masses of metal and refractory with a large of liquid reserve. Such equipment is unsuitable for rapid changes in steam flow due to the volume of heat reserve inherent in it. large amount of liquid and solid masses; these masses also make the whole unusable for mobile devices, because of its enormous weight and its lack of compactness.
The embodiment shown and described fulfills the conditions mentioned in the following: For the rapid variations in the steam key flow required by the shutdowns. departures or gear changes, or in other words, to fulfill the condition of flexibility. the heat reserve in the generator must always be at a minimum, the fuel supply and the liquid used must be synchronized with the release of v @ lp # ur, and the stopping and starting loads kept to a minimum .
In addition to the reduction in the heat reserve, which should tend as much as possible towards zero, the flexibility in a unit of this kind also requires the automatic maintenance of the proportionality of the fuel flow and.
calories Ii4rée by combustion with the supply of liquid and with the rate of discharge or eniIiloi of the vapor produced. This regulation would be impossible if we do not have a very falblf # heat reserve and controls:
appropriate. In order to obtain a high efficiency in the use of steam under pressure. it is essential that the pressure of the viip (-iii- drink high.
For high pressures Fs. so fl'f @ vit lin exaggerated weight of nleta.l. the ge11eralel1r must. be formed by steel tubes of the smallest possible diameters: the collectors and reservoirs of necessarily larger diameters must also be reduced.
Such limitations to metal envelopes exclude the use of the natural circulation of the liquid during the va porization and. therefore, require the use of other means to avoid gunshots of the metal and ensure the transmission of heat from the fuel to the vaporized liquid and to the superheated steam.
A high efficiency of the generation of steam by the heat of the fuel requires not only that the combustion be complete inside (the hearth and due to any excess air be avoided as far as possible at all loads from zero to the maximum, but also that the heating surface is suitably arranged relative to the hearth and the path of the combustion products to promote the transmission of heat through the heating surface exposed in the hearth and beyond it. This reduction in weight imposes the need for high rates of heat transmission per square meter of heating surface in order to reduce the heating surface.
To achieve compactness, the fireplace should be as small as possible and its shape should have flat faces. To reduce the size of the hearths, the rate of heat release per cubic meter must be very high and. in order to achieve high efficiency, the high rate combustion must be accomplished without excess air possible and without intestinal fuel. The key concern is to minimize. on the flat side faces of the hearth, the use of refractory requires that the tubes of small diameters be placed side by side in contact with each other:
this avoids the provision of continuous flat iiiélalliques surfaces to limit the fo @ -cr and the other key hot gas zones.
