Es kom men z.

Method for suppressing the growth of microorganisms. It has been found that sulfonium compounds exert an extremely strong damaging effect on microorganisms. These compounds, especially the salts, are usually easily soluble in water, as well as in many organic solvents.
The aqueous solutions of the pure substances are colorless, odorless and have a certain quality. Wetting and foaming power. They are therefore outstandingly suitable for all purposes where development inhibition or the killing of microorganisms is important, but where unpleasant smell, color or high toxicity are undesirable.
As experiments have shown, the action of sulfonium compounds in free or salt form extends to a wide variety of small organisms, such as bacteria, fungi, etc., which can occur on or in animal or vegetable matter.
The substances proposed here can usually be easily represented, e.g. B. according to the usual methods. The most varied types of sulfonium compounds can be used for the proposed use. There come z. B. for the process sulfonium compounds the following formula in question:

Dodecyl benzyl methyl sulfonium methosulfate (Example 9), mixture of dodecyl, tetradecyl, cetyl and octodecyl dimethyl sulfonium methosulfate (Example 6), show that these substances are good known preservatives such as .
B. the p-oxybenzoic acid esters, are essentially superior.
In addition, as tests have shown, they show their greatest effectiveness, mostly at a pg greater than 7, where the effectiveness of all phenolic and acidic preservatives falls very sharply.
Also in the fight against cereal diseases excellent results were obtained with the present sulfonium compounds, z. B. Cetyl-phen #, l-methyl-sulfonium-methosulfate was used to kill germs of Tilletia tritici. This was achieved with extremely diluted. aqueous solutions in concentrations of 0.125% and lower.
The sulfonium compounds can be used to carry out the process according to the invention with the addition of inert, solid or liquid substances, d. H. z. B. in liquid, paste or powder form. An example of the use of sulfonium compounds according to the invention is that the following:
A mixture of sulfonium compounds, which is about 50% dodecyl, 30% tetradecyl, 20% cetyl and 10% octadecyl- 'dimethyl-sulfonium - contains methosulfate and the addition of dimethyl sulfate to a corresponding mixture of dodecyl, tetradecyl,
Cetyl and octadecyl methyl thioether is prepared, one dissolves to 5 in water. This solution is used in a 1 to 10% dilution to make infected surgical instruments, rubber gloves, bandages and sewing material, etc., aseptic, which, as experiments have shown, is possible in a short time.
Microorganisms that are rinsed off when washing hands can be killed in a few minutes by adding the proposed agents in about 1% concentration to the washing water.
An application of the present method for the treatment of food, as well as for a treatment of the living human or animal body, is not claimed by this patent.
