A method of manufacturing grids for radio tubes. The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing grids for radiophonic tubes consisting of two rods and of wires arranged between these rods and on two opposite sides thereof.
According to the present invention, the grid is made from. as follows: two separate rows of spaced and guided wires are advanced a determined distance. Next, a pair of rods which are to form the side rods of the grid are introduced between the rows of wires and placed transversely to them, after which the wires of the two rows are pressed on the two opposite sides against the rods and fixed to them. sides, then cut between the stems. Then the grid wires are advanced again.
The accompanying drawing, given by way of example, illustrates an embodiment of this process. The -dispositifs used in carrying out this embodiment of the -procédé will be described below. 15 denotes opposite upper and lower horizontal combs, provided with teeth 16, between which pass the upper and lower rows of grid son 17. These different strands of wire are carried by reels. The teeth of the combs keep the strands of wire spaced, the spacing of the strands depending on the pitch the finished grid must have.
The grid can include any number of pairs of opposing grid wires, adjusted by their spacing. On one side of the combs 15 are disposed opposing upper and lower movable blades or knives 18 of such length that they extend across the rows of wires, and 19 denotes welding jaws and opposing top and bottom fasteners having a length such that they extend across the wires. 20 denotes a mandrel, having an opening 21 to receive the ends of the jaws 19. The side walls of the passage 21 have grooves 22 to receive two rods 23 in contact with one another.
The mandrel has an expandable portion, comprising a fixed jaw 24 and a laterally movable jaw 25, connected to the fixed jaw by a plate 26 attached to the. movable jaw and having an elongated slot 27 receiving screws 28, fixed to the jaw 24. The movable jaw is hand held together by a spring 29. and rests on a movable wedge 30, acting between the fixed and movable jaws . Therefore, the movable jaw can be moved integrally with the mandrel but can be moved closer and further out laterally relative to the fixed jaw of the mandrel. 31 designates the opposing upper and lower knives of the side rod cutting rods 23.
The grid wires 17 and the side rods pass through a hydrogen furnace 32, in order to be freed of the occluded gases.
The first phase of the process consists in arranging the front ends of the upper and lower rows of wires 17 on the opposite sides of a cut side rod 23 'and in fixing these wires to said rod by welding.
The strands of wire thus fixed are advanced in the direction of the arrow in FIG. 2, and the mandrel 20 is moved in the direction of its arrow so that it passes between the upper and lower rows of wires 17 and the lateral rod 23 'will enter the groove 25' of the jaw 25 (fig. 2 and 2a).
The lateral rods 23 held and guided at a given fixed point are moved in the direction of their length and engage in the passage 21 and are held there in the grooves 22. The welding and fixing jaws 19 are arranged above and below the son 17 in vertical alignment with the passage 21. The relative positions of the different parts are shown in FIGS. 2 and 2a. The welding and fixing jaws 19 are moved inwards to clamp the grid strands 17 and the free ends of these jaws clamp the wires 17 against the two rods 23, kept bare in contact with one another.
Just before the jaws 19 and the wires 17 engage for clamping, hydrogen gas is blown onto the wires 17 and the rods 23 at the welding points, and, at the instant the. jaws 19 clamp the wires 17 against the rods 23, the current is established and the wires are spot welded to the rods 23. The welding operation continues for a time just sufficient to join the wires to the rods by fusion, and the power is off, but the jaws are kept closed so that they remain in engagement with the wires 17.
The role of the fixing jaws 19, in engagement with the grid wires 17, is to hold these wires in the proper position on the rods 23 until the welded joints have cooled and further to hold the grid partially finished in place, during the other phases of the operation. The welding and fixing phases (holding in a fixed position) are illustrated in fig. 3 and 3a. The next phase is the extension and stretching of the partially completed grid to give it the desired dimensions, and this is done by moving the wedge 30 in the direction of its arrow, which has the effect of moving the movable jaw 25. sideways outward.
The extension phase is shown in Figs. 3, 3a and 4. The next step is to contract the expandable part of the mandrel, this being done by moving the wedge 30 in, a reverse direction and, after the jaw 25 has moved inward, the The entire mandrel is withdrawn from the interior of the partially completed grid and is then moved longitudinally relative to the grid strands 17 in the direction of the arrow of FIG. 5.
The mandrel 20 occupies the position shown in FIG. 5 and is held in this position until grilling is complete, as shown in figs. 5 and 5a. The next phase consists of cutting the rods 23, which is done by bringing the knives 31 together.
During all these phases, the jaws 19 have remained in tight engagement with the grid strands 17, thus maintaining the partially completed grid in place. The next step is to move the mandrel in the direction of its arrow so that it passes between the grid wires 17 and the adjacent cut rod 23 enters the groove 25 'of the jaw 25.
The mandrel now holds the partially completed grid in place, the jaws 19 are moved to the open position and are moved in the direction of the arrows of FIG. 7a, and the blades 18 are moved inward and forward so that they cut the wires 17 between the side rods, thereby separating the adjacent cut rods 23 and separating the finished grid from the grid wires 17.
During this cutting operation, the short ends of the grid wires are bent inwards around the side rods, eliminating the need for deburring. This grid falls on a conveyor 33 and the mandrel 20 is moved forward in the longitudinal direction of the rows of grid wires, FIG. 7, to advance the rows longitudinally over a distance determining the width of the following grid, which causes the different parts to occupy the position shown in FIG. 1, thus completing the cycle of operations.
In carrying out the method, the rods 23, before being advanced between the rows of grid wires, are held and guided in a fixed guide maintained at a fixed point ,, and the intermittent longitudinal movement of the rows of grid wires on the distances given for determining the width of the grids are made in relation to the fixed guiding position of the side rods.
After the completion of at least one grid, the cycle of operations. can be considered 'as consisting in placing the two side rods between the rows of the grid wires, in soldering them. grid wires to the side rods, cutting the side rods, cutting the grid wires between the side rods, longitudinally advancing the rows of grill wires a certain distance to determine the width of the grid.
The side rods, which are arranged side by side, should be close to each other or practically touching, as this results in the cut ends of the wires being short and can be bent inwards around the side rods, eliminating the need for burring these short ends, but the distance between one pair of side rods and the next can be changed. The grid can be any suitable shape and the mandrel will then have a corresponding shape.
