Pour bien faire comprendre l'invention; on en décrira ci-après, à titre d'exemple, deux formes d'exécution, en se référant aux des sins annexés, dans lesquels: La fig. 1 est une coupe, partie en éléva tion, d'un interrupteur unipolaire à double coupure; La fig. 2 est une coupe, en partie en. élé vation, d'un des dispositifs extincteurs utili sés dans l'interrupteur de fig. 1;
La fig. 3 est une coupe suivant la ligne III-III de fig. 2; La fig. 4 est une coupe suivant la ligne IV-IV de fig. 2; Les fig. 5 à 18 inclus représentent les diverses plaques élémentaires utilisées pour établir les dispositifs extincteurs représen tés particulièrement dans les fig. 2, 3 et 4; La fig. 19 est une coupe analogue à fig. 2, montrant une autre forme de réalisation du dispositif extincteur;
Electric switch. This invention relates to an electrical switch and particularly relates to high power switches intended for energy distribution installations.
The construction of switches intended for this type of service is a rather complex problem in the electrical industry. The current trend is to connect more and more separate power stations to one another to form large networks, and it follows that the amount of energy available at any point in these stations is increasing more and more. .
In spite of this, it is necessary to quickly remedy the defective conditions likely to occur in these interconnected installations if one wants to avoid harming the stability of the entire installation, and, to complicate the problem further, the companies or utilities of power distribution systems tend to apply the maximum voltage possible to interconnected installations, in order to reduce transmission losses to a minimum.
To give satisfactory results in this type of service, it is therefore necessary that the device be capable of interrupting very intense currents at high voltages, in a very short time, and the present invention is mainly aimed at obtaining a switch which fulfills these conditions in a more satisfactory manner than the devices known to date.
In the present state of this industry, the fundamental problem of interrupting circuits lies in the extinction of the arc which has been generated as a result of the separation of the contacts traversed by the current. This problem has been the subject of extensive research in recent years, and it has been generally agreed that arc extinction can be achieved very effectively by the turbulent mixing of a certain quantity of fluid, either in the gaseous state or in the liquid state, with the trajectory or gaseous envelope of the arc.
The greater the turbulence the greater the turbulence and the greater the amount of non-ionized fluid the greater the amount of non-ionized fluid passes through the arc current. There are two general methods of making this mixture. One of them is the introduction of a jet of fluid into the arc current, the other is to make the arc sluggish in such a way that a turbulent mixture results from the movement, or that 'a roll is produced as a result of this movement.
The invention particularly relates to devices in which the arc receives lateral movement within an arc duct in contact with an extinguishing fluid. Devices of this general type had previously been used, but the range of motion of the arc was limited or determined by the physical dimensions of the arc duct and, as soon as the motion of the arc from side to side was other of the conduit had taken place, any further movement was impossible.
This limitation did not create serious difficulties in the case of most circuits, but when the conditions imposed on the utilities of power distribution became more severe, it was realized that it was necessary to provide for some device allowing the arc to move more rapidly and over a . distance.
large, inside the arc duct, than hitherto possible, this additional movement at a greater speed being necessary to ensure a greater degree of turbulence near the arc current during l 'circuit breaking operation, in order to ensure the extinction of the arc, regardless of the magnitude of the overload to which the installation was likely to be subjected.
Research in this direction has shown that if the surrounding fluid is allowed to move forward of the moving arc (for example through an exhaust port at the end of a straight pipe ) and if the speed of the arc is high enough, a much more efficient extinction of the arc is effected while reducing, to a considerable extent, its duration, the energy it absorbs, etc.
It has further been found that the most suitable arc duct is of the type in which the arc can move sideways along a closed contour on itself, since it is possible to obtain a velocity. much greater arc and a considerably increased movement of the fluid, for a given value of the inducing field, in a re-entering arc duct than can be obtained in a rectilinear duct communicating with the atmosphere at one or more each of its ends. It is probable that this improved mode of action is due, at least in part, to the lower friction losses between the fluid and the limiting walls of a re-entrant duct.
Note that, although fluid moves forward of an arc, under the above conditions - the arc current behaving substantially like a piston - =, there will also be motion relative between the arc current and the fluid.
Consequently, the electric switch according to the invention, provided with separable contacts serving to establish the arc inherent in the operation of opening the circuit of said switch in contact with an extinguishing fluid, has a conduit in wherein the arc is displaced laterally along a closed contour, during each operation of opening the switch, so as to cause the formation of a lateral current of said fluid in said conduit.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a conduit is provided for the arch which has substantially the shape of a hollow cylinder. This construction lends itself to the production of a very powerful magnetic field, arranged substantially at right angles to the walls of the re-entrant duct, to cause the arc to move in this duct at a high speed. In addition, the closed contour shape of the duct makes it possible to obtain, in comparison with the space occupied, a greater length of arc duct than is possible in devices using a single duct which does not come back on it. -even.
In addition, the closed contour construction allows the arc to receive movement in a periodically repeated path in the conduit. The combined effect of these features is that a device is obtained in which the arc can move at greater speeds, and over greater distances than had been possible in previous arrangements, the result of this additional movement being to create a greater tur bulence and to ensure a much greater effectiveness of the extinction of the arc than with the help of previous constructions. The entire device is, in general, submerged in the arc extinguishing fluid.
In addition, openings or pockets may be provided along the sides of the arc duct to retain certain quantities of the extinguishing fluid and thereby ensure an adequate volume of gas to effect extinguishing the arc.
Of course, the exact shape of the arc duct is not an essential characteristic of the invention. Any other convenient form can be adopted, given that it suffices to provide a device ensuring the displacement of the arc along a contour closed on itself.
It has been discovered that when an arc is caused to move in a space consti tuted within limiting walls, the arc current, or the gaseous envelope while rotating the arc, behaves in a similar manner. similarly to that of a piston and forces the fluid trapped in the conduit to move in front of the arc current. If the limiting walls define a re-entering duct, and if an arc is caused to move through this space under the action of a magnetic device, or the like, the fluid normally trapped in said space will be expelled laterally at through it by the piston action or discharge of the arc itself.
This movement of the fluid will tend to continue, after the zero crossing in the current oscillation, to sweep the arc current and to. cause the movement of a substantially homogeneous mass of clean and non-ionized fluid between the contacts, the horns, ete. The result of this movement of a fresh dielectric between the normally excited parts is to oppose a great resistance to the bursting or "breakdown" of the dielectric inside the arc conduit and to ensure better rupture. of the circuit.
In addition to the effect. described above from the movement of the extinguishing fluid created by the piston action of the arc current, it was found that the moving mass of liquid which normally fills the arc duct acquires considerable kinetic energy and that during the period when the current is equal to zero, this mass causes the ionized gas and fluid to move a very appreciable distance which determine the actual current of the arc, laterally inside the conduit. According to one embodiment of the invention, a positive device serving to use this movement has been provided to effect a progressive elongation of the arc and thus to facilitate the extinguishing operation.
To make the invention clearly understood; two embodiments will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the appended sins, in which: FIG. 1 is a sectional view, part in elevation, of a single-pole double-break switch; Fig. 2 is a section, partly in. elevation, of one of the extinguisher devices used in the switch of fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line III-III of FIG. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken along line IV-IV of FIG. 2; Figs. 5 to 18 inclusive represent the various elementary plates used to establish the extinguishing devices shown in particular in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4; Fig. 19 is a section similar to FIG. 2, showing another embodiment of the extinguisher device;
Fig. 20 is a section taken along the line XX = XX of FIG. 19; Fig. 21 is a fragmentary development on a reduced scale of the movable contact of FIG. 19.
The switch shown in fig. 1 is of the usual type immersed in a liquid and comprises a tank or container 1 provided with a cover 3 fixed to this tank by means of studs 5. Two insulating sleeves 7 are supported by the cover 3 using flanges 9 and each of these sockets is intended to support one of the fixed contact devices II and one of the extinguishing devices 13 which collectively constitute the two cuts of the switch.
A bracket forming a bridge 15 electrically connects the two frozen contact devices II when the switch occupies the closed position of the circuit. This bracket is supported by an insulating pull rod 17 and is intended to be actuated by a suitable mechanism (not shown).
The lower end of each of the insulating sleeves 7, the fixed contact devices I1 and the extinguishing devices 13 are normally submerged in the mass of oil or other insulating liquid contained in the tank 1.
Each of the contact devices I1 com takes a molded frame provided with a circular base 21, a clamp 23 intended to engage with the lower end of the conductor 25 forming part of the insulating sleeve 7 which cooperates with this conductor, and of a U 27 piece interconnecting the socket and the clamp. A movable contact 29 is supported so as to be able to pivot on the base 21 of each of the main frames and is urged towards the stirrup forming a bridge, 15, by a spring 31.
A flexible shunt 33 connects each of these flexible contacts 29 to the corresponding frame.
The electrical circuit passing through the switch is thus relatively direct. Starting from one of the conductors 25 arranged in the insulating sleeves 7, the current passes successively through the main support frame fixed to the lower end of this conductor, the flexible shunt 33 connecting the corresponding movable contact 29 to the frame, the mobile contact itself; the rising branch 35 of the stirrup 15, the central part of this stirrup and the other freezing contact device 11 in which the current follows a substantially similar path.
Each of the extinguisher devices 13 is essentially composed of a series of superimposed plates pierced with aligned holes which constitute a tubular arc duct 37 having substantially the shape of a hollow cylinder. A magnetic device, comprising two coils 38 intended to be connected in series with the circuit controlled by the switch during the interrupting operation, and a series of iron plates, serves to create a radial inductive field inside of the arc duct 37 during the arc extinguishing operation.
This radial field is perpendicular to the arc duct and, by causing a lateral movement of the arc inside this duct during the extinguishing operation, ensures rapid and efficient extinction of said arc. Each of the devices is supported and assembled by a central bolt or tie 39, preferably of insulating material.
As shown particularly in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, the upper part of each of the extinguisher devices 13 comprises a cap 41 of magnetic material which is intended to cover the upper part of the stack of plates, so as to standardize the. distribution of the magnetic field used to move the arc and to give mechanical resistance to the stack of plates.
This cap 41 is isolated from the stacking itself by a cup of molded insulating material 42, and each of these elements 41 and 42 has a central hole 43 for the passage of the main bolt 39 with the aid of which the entire device. is assembled, and a second hole 45, of substantially rectangular shape, for the passage of the lower part of the adjacent movable contact 29. Immediately below the cap 41 is the upper coil of the pair of coils 38 intended to produce the radial field inside the arc duct 37 during the circuit breaking operation.
One end of this upper coil is connected to the frame of the fixed contact device, and the space between the interior of the coil and the bolt 39 is occupied by four sets of plates represented particularly in the fi, -. 5 to 8 inclusive.
The top plate set consists of an annular iron plate 47 placed immediately next to the central bolt 39 and an outer plate 49 made of an insulating material and intended to come into contact with the inner surface of the coil 38 These plates are shown particularly in Figs. 5 and 6, and it can be seen that the outer insulating plate 49 has a redtangular hole 51 for the passage of the corresponding rising part 35 of the stirrup forming a bridge 15.
A single insulating plate 53 having a similar rectangular opening 51 is placed immediately below the upper pair of plates 47 and 49. A second pair of plates 47 and 49 is placed below the upper insulating plate 53, and a second insulating plate 53 is arranged below this group. The main role of the iron plates 47 is to help to unify the distribution of the radial field created inside the arc duct itself, by reducing the reluctance of the magnetic path.
One of the arc forming members, shown particularly at 55 in FIGS. 17 and 18, is disposed immediately below the lower insulating plate 53 of each of the extinguishing devices. This or gane 55 is isolated from the central bolt 39 by an annular plate of insulating material 57 and has a rectangular opening 51 similar to the openings 51 of the plates 49 and 53 for the passage of the corresponding rising branch of the caliper 15.
The following elements of the stack are those which constitute the arc duct itself and include iron plates serving to promote and standardize the radial magnetic field inside said duct, plates determining the contour of the duct itself and other plates with openings serving to form pockets which retain a certain amount of the insulating liquid near the arc duct. In the construction shown, there are three groups of plates forming pockets and two groups of plates determining the contour of the arc duct itself.
Two insulating plates constitute the first element of each of the upper groups constituting the pockets. These plates are shown particularly in fig. 15 and 16 and are placed immediately below the upper arc forming plate 55. The internal plate 59, made of insulating material, has a central opening 61 serving to allow the passage of the main bolt 39 through this plate. and a series of cutout portions 63 on the outer edge of the plate, to constitute the liquid pockets. The outer plate 65 has cooperating cut-out parts, similar, 67. Below these two insulating plates is one of the groups of plates shown in FIGS. 13 and 14.
The internal element of this set of plates comprises one of the iron plates 47 also used in the upper part of the stack, an external insulating plate 69, which has substantially the same contour as the superimposed insulating plate 59 (fig. 15 and 16), being provided to isolate this plate 47 from the arc duct 37. A second iron plate 71 constitutes the extreme outer part of this set of plates and is isolated from the arc duct by an internal lining plate 73.
The next and last element of the upper bag forming group comprises two of the insulating plates shown in figs. 15 and 16.
The following set of plates comprises the first of the groups of plates which constitute the actual arc duct and is shown more particularly in FIGS. 9 and 10. It comprises one of the iron plates 47, isolated from the arc conduit 37 by an annular insulating plate 75 and one of the iron plates 71, isolated from the arc conduit 37 by an annular insulating plate 77. Au- below these plates are the two insulating plates 79 and 81 shown in figs. I1 and 12.
It will be appreciated that the opposing trim surfaces of the plates 75, 77, 79 and 81 determine the contour of the actual arc duct 37 and that, since these surfaces are substantially concentric, said duct takes the form of an arch. a hollow cylinder.
The remaining part of each of the extinguisher devices comprises groups composed of the plates described above. The set constituting the pockets, which is arranged below the lower plates 79 and 81, is composed of the plates shown in FIGS. 13 and 14.
Below this set is a set of plates such as those shown in figs. 15 and 16, this set being followed by a second set of plates such as those of FIGS. 13 and 14, these various plates jointly constituting the second of the pockets forming groups.
A set composed of two plates such as those shown in fig. 11 and 12 is placed immediately below each of these second pocket forming groups and this set of plates is followed by one of the sets shown in Figs. 9 and 10.
The last group of plates of each of the extinguishing devices is a pocket forming unit identical to the first of these units which has been described above. Below them is the lower arc forming plate 55, which has the exact same contour as the upper plate 55.
In the order of succession of each of the fire extinguisher stacks then come the lower coil 38 serving to generate a radial inductive field inside the arc duct and the plates which isolate this coil from the central bolt. These insulating plates are similar to those previously described, and the upper plates include one of the sets of plates shown in FIGS. 7 and 8. This game is followed by one of the games shown in FIGS. 5 and 6.
The following set is that shown in fig. 7 and 8, and the final clearance is that shown in fig. 5 and 6. A third arc forming plate is located at the bottom of each of the stacks, to allow the lower coil 38 to be energized during the quenching operation.
A hat 41 in magnetic material and a. insulating bowl 42 identical to the upper organs 41 and 42 are provided at the lower end of each of the extinguisher devices and have the role, together with the upper members, of maintaining the outer plates in a suitable position and of imparting resistance and from rigidity to the entire structure. The opposite edges of the two caps 41 in each extinguisher device are spaced from each other by a certain distance, in order to prevent the production of a discharge between these members.
All the plates which determine the actual arc duct are pierced with suitable openings 83 intended to receive insulating pins 85, the ends of which penetrate into openings similarly arranged in the arc forming plates 55. These pins 85 ensure the proper alignment of the various elements of the device during its assembly.
The lower coil 38 is connected between the two lower arcing plates 55, and the upper coil is connected, as mentioned above, between the frame of the fixed contact device itself and the upper arc forming plate 55.
In this way, when the arc is established inside the arc duct 37, the two coils 38 are connected in series with the arc, the part of the arc which is drawn from the formation plate. 'upper arc 55 to the movable contact 29 extinguishing due to the fact that the upper coil 38 is in parallel with it, and the part of the arc which is drawn from one to the other of the plates of the pair lower arc-forming plates 55 extinguishing in a similar fashion. The coils 38 are connected so as to constitute poles of opposite polarity, which causes the production of a radial inductive field inside the conduit.
The iron plates 47 and 71 embedded in the walls determining the arc duct and the magnetic caps 41 have the effect of standardizing and ensuring a suitable distribution of this field.
It emerges from the foregoing that the switch shown comprises an arc extinguisher device which has a tubular arc duct 37 having substantially the shape of a hollow cylinder in which the arc, formed by the separation of the cooperating contact members can be moved laterally during the extinguishing operation.
The two ends of this tubular conduit 37 are substantially closed by an arc forming member 55, which allows the arc to be moved laterally in this conduit, repeatedly following a closed path during operation. circuit breaker and, in addition, the opposing surfaces which determine parts of the arc duct 37 have cut-out parts for. create clean pockets to retain fluid close to the arc path. This ensures an adequate disposal of the extinguishing fluid during the circuit breaking operation.
When an overload occurs which can act on the control mechanism, the bridge stirrup 15 receives a downward movement. As soon as this movement has started, the shoulder 87 of each of the two movable contacts 29 comes into contact with the upper cap 41 forming part of the extinguisher device associated with it, which prevents it from following the movement of the caliper. . An arc is then established between the cooperating rising branch of the caliper and the contact member 29.
Due to the close proximity of the upper arc forming member 55, the arc formed between the yoke 35 and the movable contact member 29 comes into contact with the member 55 almost immediately. has the effect of having a section of said arc in parallel with the upper coil 38. This short section of the arc will then be extinguished since the voltage drop across the coil is less than the voltage required to maintain an arc. in parallel with the coil, so that the current passing through the circuit controlled by the switch will flow through the coil 38.
In the continuation of the downward movement of the yoke 15, an arc forms between the upper arching member 55 and the first of the two lower arching members 55. Under the influence of the upper arching member 55. radial inductive field generated by the coils 38, this arc can move laterally inside the arc duct 37 and performs such a movement.
As the circuit breaking operation continues, the rising parts 35 and the yoke 15 come entirely out of the extinguishing devices 13, and the part of each of the two arcs which is located between the two forming members. lower arc 55 is extinguished, which has the effect of connecting each of the coils 38 in the circuit controlled by the switch. The combined result of this action is to cause the formation of a very strong magnetic field (indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3) inside the arc duct.
This field causes a very rapid movement of the arc inside the duct, the arc moving substantially around the central axis of the extinguisher device. The result of this high speed movement of the arc and the presence of a gas envelope around said arc, that intense local turbulence is created near the current of the arc. The volatilization products of the arc, the vapor and part of the extinguishing liquid itself mix in such a way that, as soon as the arc has reached a zero point of the current wave, the arc is re-ignited. becomes practically impossible.
The movement of the arc which has just been described also has the effect of imparting considerable kinetic energy to the liquid moving in the arc duct 37. This kinetic energy has the effect of continuing the movement of the fluid after passing through. zero point in the current wave and to cause a certain quantity of homogeneous and relatively cold liquid to move between the contact members 35 and 29 and between the various parts of the arcing plates 55, including the surface which was last oc cupied by the arc.
A particularly beneficial effect is created by causing a cooled, non-ionized liquid to move over the heated parts of the arcing members. As is well known to those skilled in the art, if the extreme point of an electric arc is located on a metallic surface and does not move on this surface at a very high speed, this surface is brought to a very high temperature and can emit a considerable number of electrons which greatly facilitate re-ignition of an arc after a zero point of the current wave has been exceeded.
However, if these heated electron emitting surfaces are coated with a cooled insulating agent, it becomes much more difficult for the arc to reignite when the voltage is restored, and this is the effect achieved in the device. described.
By virtue of the movement of the arc current and the entrapment of the liquid in the arc conduit, at the time and following the passage of the zero current, the re-ignition of the arc, if it occurs, must take place between cooled metal surfaces which provide the maximum possible impedance to this re-ignition. This effect is so marked that practically the re-ignition of an arc after the current wave has passed through a zero point is prevented.
The operation of the construction shown in fig. 19 to 21 is based essentially on the same principles as that of the device described above. In other words, the device comprises means for constituting a substantially tubular arc duct which is lined with an insulating material, means for drawing an arc inside this duct and a magnetic device serving to generate a radial inducing field causing the arc to rotate in said conduit during the extinguishing operation.
This modified construction has, however, an additional characteristic which resides in the application of a device thanks to which the rotation of the arc causes a progressive extension of said arc.
As shown in fig. 19, this modified construction comprises a metal collar 101 intended to engage with the lower end of a conductor 25 enclosed by the cooperating insulating sleeves 7 and a circular plate 103 attached to this collar 101 by means of a support 105, the collar., the support and the plate being molded in one piece.
A part in the form of a cha skin 107, of magnetic material, fixed to the lower surface of the plate 103 by bolts 109, is threaded to be screwed on a tubular insulating part 111 which constitutes the external walls and one of the two surfaces. opposites of the tubular arc duct itself 113. A coil 115, one end of which is electrically connected to the plate-shaped part 103 of the fixed contact frame, is connected at its other end to a contact member annular 117 placed immediately below the coil 115. A hollow contact member 119 supported by the stirrup for mant bridge 15 cooperates with the fixed contact 117.
A series of plates of insulating material 121 and 123, arranged alternately, are mounted on a bolt 125 which is embedded in an insulating material and housed in the central part of the duct. arc 113. These plates constitute the internal surfaces of the arc duct and, because of their different diameters, constitute the equivalent of the oil pockets of the previous example.
The support bolt 125 is preferably made of a magnetic material, so that it contributes to the uniformity of the radial inductive field generated in the arc duct by the coil 115.
Fig. 21 is a developed view showing the shape of the movable contact 119, and it can be seen that this member comprises a flattened contact part 127, intended to come into contact with the cooperating fixed contact 117 placed at the upper end of the duct to arc 113, and a helical portion 129, along which the arc can move during the extinction operation. The helical part 129 is arranged, having regard to the polarity of the coil 115 generating the radial magnetic field inside the arc duct, in such a way that the arc is forced to move on this part while 'it performs its lateral movement in the duct itself.
As previously mentioned, this movement causes a progressive lengthening of the arc, independently of the extension produced by the normal downward movement of the stirrup constituting the bridge.
The mode of action of this embodiment is essentially the same as that of the device described above. When a predetermined overload occurs, the yoke 15 moves to the open position of the circuit, which establishes an arc between the contact element 127 of the movable tubular contact member 119 and the contact plate. contact 117 supported at the upper end of the arc duct.
Coil 115 is normally connected in series with the current circuit flowing through the switch and, under the influence of the radial field thus created in the arc conduit, the arc is stressed as soon as it is formed. , to follow the helical surface 129 of the moving contact organ. This movement effects a progressive elongation of the arc, which contributes to the downward movement of the contact member itself. The outer surface of the larger insulating plates 123 and the inner surface of the tubular insulating member 111 constitute the surfaces of the arc duct 113 in which this movement takes place.
The smaller sized plates 121 constitute a device by which it is ensured that the adequate volume of insulating liquid is available during the extinguishing operation, and a very rapid extinction of the arc results.
This modified arrangement of the extinguisher also allows the arc to move in this device along a closed contour, in the event that extinguishing the arc presents some difficulty due to abnormal conditions of the circuit. In addition, when the movable contact member 119 is about to reach the open position, it communicates the lower end of the arc duct 113 with the main body of liquid, which allows the products arc volatilization to be expelled with the help of the arc current.
This action, combined with the rotational movement of the arc which results from the radial field, ensures a certain extinction of any arc to which the device is likely to be subjected.
In the embodiments described above, it has been shown how the invention can be applied to switches of the liquid type. The principles on which the lateral movement of an arc in a conduit following a closed contour is based are also advantageously applicable to switches which are not immersed in a liquid.
In fact, in the constructions shown, one does not rely entirely on the liquid itself to generate the extinguishing gas, the various insulating plates being able to be made of fiber or of another material which, in itself, has the property of. give rise to an are extinguishing gas when placed near an electric arc.
