Description

A method of manufacturing a baker's shovel and shovel obtained by means of said method. The baker's shovels currently in use have two drawbacks: Being made entirely of fir wood, they break easily and they are quickly worn out. It is therefore advisable to make them in hard wood, preferably in so-called "cross" wood. However, the thickness at the end opposite the point and especially the wedge shape that these shovels present make it difficult to manufacture them in crossed wood, since this material does not lend itself easily to planing: The present invention comprises a method of manufacturing a baker's shovel, as well as a shovel obtained by means of this method.

The method that comprises the invention is characterized in that one uses two identical thin blades, crossed wood, one of which serves as a base on which a thicker fir wood blade is glued, which blade is planer in the form of a wedge after drying and on which the second blade of crossed wood is glued after planing, in that the crossed wood is only planed to form the tapered part at the end of the shovel. The shovel that the invention comprises is characterized in that its flat surfaces and the tapered part at the end of the shovel are made of crossed wood, the handle being of hard wood.

The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the shovel according to the invention.

Fig. 1 shows said shovel seen from the front; Fig. 2 is a side view; Fig. 3 shows the same shovel in plan. The shovel shown can be obtained as follows: A thin blade a of crossed wood, that is to say with a thickness of approximately 3 mm, is cut along the contours b of the shovel (fig. 1). On this blade a, we glue a blade c 8 to 10 mm thick in fir wood ; the two blades then still have the same thickness everywhere, therefore 3 and 8 to 10 mm.

Some time after this bonding, when this assembly has dried sufficiently, the fir plank c is planed on its free side, giving it the shape of a wedge, following the inclination shown in fig. 2. The upper end of the blade c (fig. 1 and 2) remains untouched by the planer implement during said work. Next, a second cross-wood plank, similar to the first, is glued onto the planed surface of the plank c. When the whole is dry, the end of the crossed wooden parts is planed to form the tapered part of the shovel (fig. 2).

Finally, we put a hardwood handle, which has a pointed end. This end engages in a notch of the flat part of the shovel, this handle being held in this notch by means of a screw f with nut and washer.

The shovel shown and described has the same advantages as a hardwood shovel and its manufacture is as easy as that of a fir wood shovel.
