Arc converter with electrode cooling. In spark gap arrangements that are used to convert electrical voltages (arc converters) an arc burns periodically between metal electrodes. The spark gap is blown with a gas to cool the arc and to deionize the space between the electrodes after the erosion of the current.
In the arc channel and in the anode and cathode case, i.e. in the vicinity of the arc roots, heat is generated, which is partly dissipated by the flowing gas and partly transferred to the electrodes. In order that the electrodes are not excessively heated during continuous operation with high amperage, it is necessary that the heat is continuously removed from the electrodes.
The heat can be dissipated by flowing liquid, by flowing air or by evaporating liquid. It is now desirable that the heat is dissipated from the electrodes in such a way that all parts of the electrodes are sufficiently cooled. The invention makes this possible because the coolant conducting bodies for the replaceable parts of the electrodes that are in contact with the arc are arranged and measured in such a way that
that in operation all parts of the electrodes have approximately the same temperature.
The invention is shown in the drawing in an exemplary embodiment.
A denotes a ring electrode and B denotes the counter-pole electrode of an arc valve. C is the second pair of electrodes of the arc valve in view.
In the illustrated embodiment, liquid cooling is used. The speed of the liquid is increased at those points on the electrodes that are more stressed by the arc heat.
An increase: the speed at those: places that are particularly heavily stressed by the Licbtboigen heat can be achieved by guiding the liquid in a spiral shape or in a snake shape by:
that the cross-section of the spiral or serpentine coolant channels gradually decreases at these points of the electrodes.
For the practical implementation of such a liquid guide, for example on the back of the. Electrodes snake-shaped cooling tubes attached to who.
In this case, however, it must of course be ensured that: the heat transfer between: the cooling tubes and the electrode tubes to be cooled are not impeded by heat-insulating substances such as air. It is better :
Therefore, if such cooling hoses are built into the electrodes themselves, as would be easily possible with cast electrodes, for example.
In view of the exchangeability of the parts subject to the burn-off, it is advantageous to divide each electrode into two parts. In this case, ribs can then be attached to the surfaces of the two parts facing one another to guide the liquid.
This is the easiest way to ensure that the liquid flows past the particularly hot spots on the electrodes.
Such an arrangement is shown in the illustration. Gag n: the ring electrode A is: the body D opposite. On the body D there are annular ribs with corresponding passages, so that after the parts A and D have been assembled, channels are formed through which the cooling liquid is guided.
This happens in a similar way with the opposite pole electrode B, which is composed of the cooling liquid guide body E. The supply and discharge of the liquid takes place with the ring electrode: through the tubes h '(only one of which is shown), with the opposite pole electrode through the tubes G.
The two parts assembled to guide the cooling liquid are designed in such a way that only parts A and B are exposed to the arc: and accordingly have to be replaced after a long period of operation.
So that this replacement can be carried out without difficulty and, on the other hand, a good seal is available, the parts A and D are at the upper connection point a with one another screwed.
They can therefore be taken out of the arc chamber as a whole, the part A attacked by the burn can be replaced by a new part A and the parts A and D, which are screwed together again, can be re-installed in the arc chamber.
The parts A and D respectively. B and E can also: be screwed together with nuts, as is the case with parts B and E with union nut 1J and both parts A and D by: the mother J is made. The sealing of the electrode parts can be done @ by subsequent soldering or pressing.
But this would be quite cumbersome. It is, therefore, more useful if the seal between: the two electrode parts by means of sealing surfaces on the replaceable part,: whose metal is softer, or: by means of pressure edges on:
the parts made of softer material or by inserted lead seals. Such a pressure edge seal is shown for the ring and violin pole electrodes in the illustration at b and c. It is assumed that: the part A respectively. :
Part B consists of a softer material than parts D respectively. E (in most cases, these parts that are: exposed to the arc will be made of copper or silver or alloys: these metals, i.e. soft metals, for reasons of erosion).
In the arrangement shown in the drawing, between parts B and A, e.g., the i position 1 is ignited, so that one base point of the arc is on part A and the other base point of the arc is on part B.
By means of two parts A and B in the direction of the s 'hen c drawn arrow, the gas jets flowing on the parts A and B located foot points to the opening, of part A driven.
The foot point located on part B moves. here. from point 1 to point 2. The base point located on part A moves from point 1 to point 3 and then jumps to the opposite main electrode, that is, to the opposite part B (point 5). The base points are then on parts B and the arc burns between the main electrodes, i.e. between parts B.
From the previous description of the processes it can be seen that the arc root is only located at point 3 for a short time: because it is driven by the gas jet from point 3 to point 5.
The described arrangement, that each electrode is divided into two parts to accommodate the liquid cooling, results in the difficulty "that a relatively large amount of space is required, so that under certain circumstances the disadvantage that the guidance of the magnetic Flux, which is expediently used for liotation of the arc, is made more difficult.
This disadvantage can be remedied by: that iron (in a form suitable for the magnetic field pattern) is embedded in: the exchangeable electrode parts (for example part K) or inserted in the liquid guiding body (for example part L) is, or that the liquid guide bodies consist wholly or partly of iron in such a way that:
that special magnetic iron is not necessary for the correct guidance of the magnetic flux. Such a case of game is illustrated in part D. (It is assumed that: the parts M, N and 0 also consist of iron or permanent magnets.) Furthermore, it should be mentioned that:
the structure of the electrodes in the described type of liquid cooling: thereby. very simple, can be designed @that:
the electrode parts exposed to the burn-up are carried by the liquid guide parts. At. The arc current guide shown in the illustration is, for example: the ring electrode A through: the guide part D resp. :
held by the connecting pipe P respectively. connected to the ground: the arc chamber. The opposite pole electrode B is carried by the liquid guide part E and is also connected to the bottom of the arc chamber by the opposite pole carrier M.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in the figure, the coolant conductors D and E for the exchangeable parts of the electrodes that are touched by the arc are arranged and dimensioned in such a way that all parts of the electrodes come closer together during operation have the same temperature.
When using air resp. Gas flows for cooling the electrodes are expediently those of the air respectively. The surfaces of the heat conductors in contact with the gas flow are dimensioned large and the electrodes are designed in such a way that there is good heat conduction from the points in contact with the arc: the electrodes to the heat conductors.
Ribs or wings are provided as heat conductors. These can be attached directly to the replaceable electrode parts if, for example, the electrodes are made of cast, injection-molded or punched material. On the other hand, however, it is also possible to provide the cooling surfaces on a special electrode holder.
In this case, however, particular care must be taken: that the exchangeable electrode parts are attached to the carrier in such a way that @that there is good thermal conductivity: that is a prerequisite for correct heat dissipation.
It must therefore: avoid the inclusion of heat-insulating layers between the electrodes and the carrier, respectively. For example, the gaps between these two parts must be filled with materials that conduct heat well.
The. Flow: the cooling gas can take place one after the other or in parallel branches for the ring electrode and the opposite pole electrode. The decision as to which of the routes is chosen results from the arrangement of the pressurized gas system. If a large amount of grass is available at low pressure, the parallel connection is possible, if high pressure is available,
the series connection is to be provided. Either the air flow required for the ignition and extinguishing of the arc or an air flow only intended for cooling the electrodes can be used as the cooling air flow.
In the former case, the air flow must paint the heat conducting bodies (e.g. ribs) of the electrodes before it comes into contact with the arc.
When evaporative cooling is used, containers filled with water and used as coolant conduction and heat conduction bodies can be attached to the parts of the electrodes touched by the arc to dissipate the heat from the electrodes, so that the electrodes on these parts Heat is dissipated by the steam generated in the container.
It is expedient here to design the liquid containers in such a way that they simultaneously form the supports for the exchangeable electrode parts.
