Galvanic element with air depolarization. In the case of galvanic elements with air depolarization, the positive pole, which is usually composed of a porous mass of active carbon, must be gas-permeable, but liquid-impermeable. For this purpose, the individual carbon particles have either been made water-repellent themselves or the entire positive electrode has been externally coated with water-repellent substances. However, as a result of this treatment, the internal resistance of such galvanic elements was undesirably increased.
Nevertheless, such measures could not be dispensed with, since otherwise the conditions required for oxygen depolarization could not be achieved, namely keeping the electrode dry inside and permeating it with air and only bringing it into contact with the electrolyte in its outer boundary zone.
This disadvantage is avoided in the galvanic element with air depolarization according to the present invention in that the electrolyte contains a swellable substance in such an amount that the electrolyte liquid present in the element is insufficient for a complete swelling of the swellable substance. Starch products are preferably used as the swellable substance.
In order to prevent wetting of the positive electrode in the galvanic element according to the invention even when the electrolyte liquid is poured in, it is advantageous to surround the positive electrode with an envelope, for example made of impregnated paper, that as little liquid as possible during the swelling process reaches the positive electrode. Any known solution of pathogen salts, such as, for. B. ammonia, zinc chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride or the like can be used.
As tests have shown, at least 30 parts of this flour are to be added to 100 parts of an ordinary ammonium electrolyte when using wheat flour as a swelling substance.
Compared to the previously known air = oxygen elements with an electrode which, as detailed above, has been made gas-permeable but liquid-impermeable, the element according to the invention offers the further advantage that any electrode mixture which has proven to be good for air-oxygen transfer , comes into effect with full efficiency, since any special treatment of the electrode material to make it water-impermeable is no longer necessary.
