Description
Electric discharge tube. The invention relates to an electric discharge tube with positive column discharge of such a shape that the tube ends are adjacent to one another. It has been shown that if a common base is cemented to these pipe ends, the pipe often bursts during operation. It has been found that this is caused by the expansion of the tube during operation. The disadvantage arises essentially in discharge tubes in which the discharge takes place in the vapor of a metal that is difficult to evaporate, eg. B.
Sodium, lithium, magnesium, zinc, i.e. metals whose vapor pressure at a temperature of 200 C is only a fraction of a millimeter. These discharge tubes are heated to a high temperature during operation, which causes the glass to undergo considerable expansion.
This disadvantage is now eliminated according to the invention in that one of the ends of the tube is not rigidly connected to the base. It has been found that the bursting of the tube under the influence of thermal expansion can usually be avoided in a simple manner.
It has been shown, however, that if the other end of the tube is rigidly connected to the base, the tube can sometimes burst, namely after prolonged operation and after switching the tube on and off many times. This risk can be significantly reduced if this tube end is not rigidly connected to the base either.
The power supply wire is preferably given an expansion turn between the base and the tube end that is not rigidly attached to the base, so that when the tube is expanded, this power supply wire does not give rise to undesirable stresses either.
The drawing shows two execution examples of the subject matter of the invention. In Figs. 1 and 3, two discharge tubes with base are shown partly in view, partly in section, and Fig. 2 is a cross section along the line II-II of the in Fig 1 shown tube. .
The depicted in Fig. 1 discharge tube 1 is U-shaped and see ver at the two ends with a foot 2 on which a hot cathode 3 and an anode 4 are arranged. The tube contains a lot of noble gas, e.g. B. Neon, with a pressure of a few millimeters, and it also contains a lot of sodium, which develops sodium vapor in companies, so that the tube then emits an intense, yellowish light and has a positive column discharge.
The tube is provided with a base 5 made of insulating material, e.g. B. asbestos cement equipped. This base has two cylindrical recesses on the underside in which the ends of the tube are attached. The end 6 is rigidly attached to the base 5 by means of a putty or ipsmass 7, which is not the case with the tube end 8. Between this tube end and the base 5 there is some clearance, for example 1 mm.
The base 5 is designed as a bayonet base. The two contacts 9 are connected to the electrodes, with each cathode 3 being connected to the anode 4 surrounding it. Since each electrode set is only provided with one power supply wire, the hot cathodes 3 cannot These electrodes are heated by the discharge current, but it would also be possible to provide the base with such a number of contact organs that special heating currents are passed through the hot cathodes can.
The discharge tube 10 shown in FIG. 3 is also U-shaped and provided with two glow electrodes 11 which consist of bifilar-wound wires which are coated with a substance with a strong electron emission capability. This tube also contains, like the one shown in FIG. 1, a gas vapor filling. The tube is equipped with a base 12 made of insulating material.
It is fastened by means of the copper wires 13; which are quite strong, but produce a non-rigid connection with the discharge tube so that the tube can expand in relation to the base. In the conductors 13 from an expansion turn 14 is provided. As can be seen from the figure, each of the conductors 13 is connected to the two fuse wires of a glow electrode. As a result, no special heating currents can be passed through, but these are heated by the discharge current.
The conductors 13 are also connected to the metal rods 15 which are curved at right angles at one end and provided with screw threads at the other end. The curved ends fit in recesses in the base, while nipples 16 are screwed onto the screw-threaded ends, where the rods are also firmly attached to the base. The nipples 16 serve at the same time as contact organs of the discharge tube
