Modulationseinrichtung.
Modulation device. The invention relates to a modulation device for transmitting messages by means of electrical waves.
In transmitter arrangements, a pinhole frequency voltage is usually impressed on the tube and another oscillating voltage is applied so that modulation occurs in the tube. A tube used in this way is known as a modulator; the Mo dulation that arises at its output can be transmitted on lines or broadcast via an antenna.
The present invention aims to improve such tube modulation devices. It has a tube with at least three grid electrodes, between the cathode and the anode, which have such voltages that a virtual cathode forms between the cathode and the anode, the carrier oscillation and the modulation oscillation each being fed to a control electrode the one between the cathode and the virtual cathode,
the other is between the virtual cathode and the anode.
A major advantage of the modulation device according to the invention is that it is possible to apply practically any pre-energizing potential to the outer control grid or to any other electrode outside the virtual cathode without significantly affecting the high-frequency source. The device therefore readily allows its power to be controlled by means of a variable bias potential.
In the accompanying drawing, from exemplary embodiments according to the invention are shown a directions. It shows: FIG. 1 a schematic circuit diagram, FIG. 2 a wireless transmitter device which uses a hexode tube as an oscillator-modulator, and FIG. 3 a similar device, but in which the Hexode tube only acts as a modulator.
The system of FIG. 1 includes a Hegode 10. In the space between the cathode 1 and the anode 6, four grid-like electrodes 2, 3, 4 and 5 are arranged.
An alternating voltage source Si is connected between the outer grid 4 and the cathode 1, and a second alternating voltage source S2 is connected between the inner grid 2 and the cathode. The carrier frequency source can also be replaced by a feedback oscillation system.
A form of feedback system suitable for this purpose is shown in FIG. 2, where a vibration feedback system is connected to electrodes 2 and 3. The output circuit of the tube encloses a tuned circuit that contains a coil and a capacitor in parallel. This matched old man is marked with 0 and is connected between anode and earth. Output terminals 0 'and 01' are attached to the opposite sides of tuned circle 0.
These output terminals can be connected to any subsequent apparatus to which the transmission of the characters is desired.
In order to put the system into operation, the sources 11 and 12 are provided in series between the anode and earth in order to make the anode 6 and the screen electrodes 5 and 3 positive with respect to the cathode. A voltage source 13 is also provided between grid 4 and earth, which makes grid 4 negative with respect to the cathode. Grid 2 receives a negative potential from a battery 9.
The positive voltage at the screen grid 5 should be lower than that at the anode 6. This screen grid can be omitted, but in some embodiments of the invention its presence serves to improve the general effect.
In the .System described above, the electrons that are emitted from the cathode 1, through the mesh of the inner. Grid 2 to screen grid 3 by virtue of the positive voltage that the latter he shares, pulled. The electrons approaching the screen grid 3 travel at high speed, and most of them therefore pass through the screen grid and approach the outer grid 4, which is negatively biased.
The grid 4 therefore serves to retard the movement of electrons, and many of them are retracted to the positive screen grid 3. This cloud of delayed electrons, which floats between electrodes 3 and 4, forms a "virtual catho, de" with respect to electrodes 4, 5 and 6 of the modulator, due to the fact that electrons easily move up from the cloud the same way as if they had actually been created by the actual cathode, pulled away.
The "virtual cathode" and its approximate position is indicated by the dot-dash line 7, it being understood that the line 7 does not represent a physical element of the tube. The positive potentials of the anode 6 and the screen grid 5 serve to draw electrons from the virtual cathode through the outer grid 4 and the screen grid 5 in the usual manner to the anode. The tube therefore has two anodes in its effect, namely elements 3 and 6.
The inner grid controls the total emission of the cathode 1. The electrodes 4, 5 and 6 work together with the virtual cathode 7 like a usual vacuum tube, in which the output circuit 0 is connected between the anode 6 and the virtual cathode. The control of the electron flow is taken over by the grids 2 and 4.
Modulation arises in the system in the following way: If the grid 2 is only slightly negative or somewhat positive, there is a large supply of electrons on the virtual cathode 7, which is able to deliver an electron current into the modulator part of the tube. If the grid 2 oscillates considerably negatively, the virtual cathode and therefore the anode 6 is momentarily deprived of its electron supply, whereby the output current is reduced.
The output current of the modulator thus fluctuates in accordance with the oscillations of the source 82, so that the changing voltage of the source 82 modulates the changing voltage of the source Si in the tube. The modulation product appears in the output circle of the tube.
The elements of the tube, with the exception of the actual cathode, can be considered to be in two groups; first in the elements 4, 5 and 6, the source 8i assigned; and secondly in elements 2 and 3, which are assigned to the source S'2.
The elements in each group are mutually adjacent, but all elements of group (1) are outside those of group (2).
It is possible to control the output of the modulator over a wide range by selecting the negative bias voltage that is applied to the outer control grid .1. It is observed that this type of control does not significantly affect the oscillator part of the system because the grid 4 is unable to cut off the flow of electrons to the oscillator anode 3.
FIG. 2 shows an oscillator-modulator system which can be used in a transmission device for wireless telephony and which is similar to that of FIG. The tube 10 shown in FIG. 2 is similar to the tube 10 of FIG. 1. The same reference characters are used to designate elements which are similar in both figures. Instead of the Weohsel voltage source 82 of FIG. 1, a feedback oscillation system is provided.
This visual oscillation system contains a coil 15 parallel to a capacitor 16, one end of which is connected to earth and the other end to the inner grid 2 via a blocking capacitor 17. It also has a coil 18 between the screen grid 3 and the battery 12, which coil is coupled to the coil 15. The coil 18 feeds back enough energy to keep the oscillations at a sufficiently high amplitude.
Fine microphone. 19 supplies an audio frequency which is pressed onto the outer grid 4 via an input transformer 201. This audio frequency on the outer grid is used to modulate the vibrations in the tube.
The modulated radio frequency symbols are impressed onto an antenna 21 via an output transformer 22.
The way the system works can often. can be improved if the audio frequency control grid is constructed in such a way that there is no distortion, that is, if "linear" modulation is present for each degree of modulation.
Distortion-free modulation is achieved for any modulation factor if there is a linear relationship between the preprocessing of the modulation grating and the steepness of the anode current characteristic. The bias voltage applied to this grid should have that value which corresponds approximately to the middle point of the linear part of the characteristic.
This requires a grid that has a non-uniform grid mesh. The exact change in the spaces between the grids can best be determined by experiment for any type of tube.
It is often desirable that the inner control grid 2, I to which the carrier frequency oscillations are applied, is constructed in such a way that distortion-free amplification arises.
It is known that distortion-free amplification requires such a construction of the control grid that there is a linear relationship between grid bias and anode current, that is, a constant slope. This type of distortion-free amplification characteristic can also be achieved by selecting the interstitial space. the appropriate space can easily be paved by trial.
In the event that the system is operated like a "Clans C" amplifier, the carrier frequency grid is assigned a considerably higher negative bias (operating point outside the bend); the anode circuit efficiency is quite high in this case.
Fig. 3 shows a modification of the system of Fig. 2; the tube 10 in Fig. 3 operates only as a modulator. In this arrangement, the tube is not used to generate vibrations. The inertial oscillation is generated by an external source 2, 3 @ and applied to the external control grid 4. The audio frequency from the microphone 19 is pressed onto the inner grille 2.
Apart from the interchanging of the radio frequency and audio frequency on the control grids 2 and 4, the work is otherwise similar to that in the system of FIG. The modulator tube is coupled to antenna 21 in the same way. The functions of the control grid and also the measures to achieve freedom from distortion are reversed.
Pentode tubes can also be used (the screen 5 being omitted); the best results are, however, achievable with hexodes. In FIGS. 2 and 3, the grid 2 can be wound uniformly or unevenly. A uniform mesh network is preferable for "Class C" amplifiers. The screens 3 and 5 are preferably finely meshed.
The voltages at grid 4, screen grid 5 and anode 6 should preferably be selected so that the average anode current is less than half the average screen grid current or less than a third of the average cathode current, the cathode current essentially being the sum , the screen and anode current. This ratio ensures that the anode alternating current has a negligible influence on the performance of the oscillator circuit.
