Trois formes d'exécution du moteur se lon l'invention sont représentées schémati quement, à titre d'exemples, aux dessins an nexés, dans lesquels: La fig. 1 est une élévation en coupe d'une partie de l'extrémité supérieure du cylindre, du piston et de la culasse de la première forme d'exécution du moteur selon l'invention, la coupe étant faite selon la ligne 1-1 de la fig. 2; La fig. 9- est une coupe selon la ligne 2-2 de la fig. 1;
Notenr internal combustion type with injection of liquid fuel. The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine of the type with injection of liquid fuel and compression ignition, having a cylinder head in which is provided a pocket of cooled combustion chamber opening into the bore of the cylinder and having a recessed member mounted in its part located near the bore of the cylinder, this recessed member forming part of the wall of the combustion chamber and being constructed and arranged so that the flow of heat, originating from this hollow member and going towards the adjacent cooled parts, is limited, a communication passage being provided in the hollow member,
through which air is forced into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke.
The engine according to the invention is charac terized in that the shape of the pocket and of the recessed member is such that the combustion chamber formed has a practically circular transverse section in planes perpendicular to an axis, and of the walls of 'end of which the minimum distance between them is at least two thirds of the average diameter of the combustion chamber, the communication pitch being formed so that the charge of air passed through it, during the compression stroke, will be heated and enter the combustion chamber in such a direction that the charge in the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke will be rotating as a whole around said axis, while at least one the fuel injection is mounted in a cooled part of the wall of the ladle,
at a point practically remote from the axis of the combustion chamber, and arranged in such a way as to provide the combustion chamber with at least one jet of fuel the mean direction of which forms, with a line parallel to said axis, an angle comprised between 0 and 45.
Preferably, the shape of the pocket and of the recessed member is such that it constitutes a combustion chamber of approximately cylindrical shape, the length of this chamber, measured along its axis, being for example approximately equal to its diameter.
The walls of the pocket, having to withstand the pressure, are advantageously either re-cooled. air, is cooled with the aid of a liquid, while the passage of heat, from the hot hollow member to the cooled part surrounding it, is kept low by arranging this member so that it presents limited contact with adjacent cooled parts.
The fuel injection device is a sprayer which preferably has a single orifice and is intended to provide a simple jet of fuel. In some embodiments of the engine, one or more additional non-cooled members or internal linings may be provided in the pocket near the parts of the wall thereof not lying directly near the hollow member, these uncooled members also being arranged such that the flow of heat to the adjacent cooled walls is limited.
Thus, the main part or substantially all of the wall of the combustion chamber can be constituted by uncooled organs, so as to facilitate efficient combustion and to improve the operation of the engine in general.
Three embodiments of the engine according to the invention are shown schematically, by way of examples, in the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a sectional elevation of part of the upper end of the cylinder, piston and cylinder head of the first embodiment of the engine according to the invention, the section being taken along line 1-1 of fig. 2; Fig. 9- is a section on line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to fi-. 1, but the second form of execution of the engine according to the invention, the. section being made along line 3-3 of fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a section taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 3; Fig. J is a view similar to FIGS. 1 and 3, but of the third embodiment of the engine, object of the invention.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2., the engine comprises a cylinder A, the upper end of this cylinder being closed by a cylinder head B in which are formed - intake and exhaust ports B1, B2, controlled by mushroom valves B3. B '. A piston C comes and goes in the cylinder and its head is intended to be located, at the end of its stroke, in the immediate vicinity of the cylinder head B of the cylinder.
A cooled pocket D is also placed in the cylinder head; this pocket is generally cylindrical in shape and is arranged with its axis parallel to the axis of the cylinder, its mouth being partly hole on one side of the cylinder bore and partly opening into this latter , as shown in fig. 1 ..
A hollow member E, in the form of a stopper, uncooled, is arranged in the mouth of the pocket D. This member is of generally cylindrical external shape, the main part of its circumferential surface being close to the adjacent part of the circumferential wall of the pocket, but yet at a small distance from this part, while a narrow flange El, formed on the outer circumferential surface of the member E, engages a seat in the mouth of the pocket, with which it is held in engagement by a threaded ring f, formed for example from a non-ferrous metal such as brass.
Thus the flow of heat from the member E to the wall of the pocket D is limited due to the small contact surface between these parts. A second plug-shaped member G is also arranged in the internal end of the pocket D, so as to practically fill the part of the pocket which is not occupied by the organ E and so as to abut against this. last organ. This member G is also arranged so that the main part at least of its outer surface is spaced a small distance from the adjacent cooled walls of the pocket D.
Depths H, H ', in the form of parts of a cylinder, are formed in the opposite faces of the member E and the member G. These depressions together form a combustion chamber J, practically cylindrical, of which the 'axis is in a plane perpendicular to. the axis of the cylinder and the axis of the pocket D.
A passage EZ is formed in the member E and constitutes a communication between the wound of the cylinder _4 and the interior of the combustion chamber J, the direction of this passage being approximately tangent to a circle having its center on the axis of the cylindrical combustion chamber .7, so that the. air charge expelled through this passage, during the compression stroke of piston C, will enter the combustion chamber J so as to oblige the charge in the combustion chamber, at the end of the pressure stroke. com pressure, to be in rotation around the axis of this chamber.
The partially cylindrical indentations H, <I> Hl </I> located in the component E and in the plug G, are such as the ends of the cylindrical combustion chamber J, as well as the circumferential walls of this chamber, are constituted by parts of the organs E and G, as shown in FIG. 2.
A fuel atomizer K is mounted in the circumferential wall of the pocket D, the axis of this atomizer being parallel to the axis of the cylindrical combustion chamber J, but it is displaced with respect to the axis of this cylinder. combustion chamber, so as to be near a part of the cylindrical wall of the combustion chamber, an orifice being formed in the plug G, through which the jet coming from this atomizer can pass into the chamber combustion.
In the second embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the engine comprises a cylinder L whose outer end is closed by a cylinder head M in which intake and exhaust ports can be formed, controlled by mushroom valves arranged similar to those of the form of execution shown in fi-. <B> 1 </B> and 2.
The <I> L </I> cylinder contains a reciprocating piston L, the head of which is intended to approach closely the cylinder head of the cylinder, at the end of its penetration stroke.
A cooled pocket N, of generally cylindrical shape, is also formed in the cylinder head M of the cylinder, this pocket being arranged with its axis parallel to the axis of the cylinder and so that its mouth is partly on one side. bore of the cylinder and partly covers this bore.
A cylindrical, unchilled tubular jacket 0 is placed inside the pocket N, this jacket being for example formed of a heat-resistant steel and being of a length approximately equal to the length of the sleeve. pocket, while the diameter of the main part of its outer circumferential surface is somewhat smaller than the diameter of the inner circumferential surface of the pocket, so that the main part of the circumference of the shirt 0 is near, but at a short distance, the cooled circumferential wall of the pocket.
A narrow flange 0 'is formed on the outer circumferential surface of the liner 0 and protrudes from this surface. This flange engages with a seat of the circumferential wall of the pocket and is held in place against this seat by a ring 02 made of brass for example or of another malleable non-ferrous metal, the flange Ol constituting the only contact between. the plug 0 uncooled and the cooled wall of pocket N.
'A plug-like organ P is fitted inside a portion of the sleeve 0 lying near the mouth of the pocket, this organ P fitting both tightly into the sleeve 0 and being itself -even uncooled. In another embodiment, the member P could have been manufactured with the end of the liner 0 lying near the bore of the cylinder.
A deep helical groove P 'is formed in the circumferential wall of the plug-like organ P, this groove forming with the adjacent part of the cylindrical sleeve 0 a helical passage, one end of which opens into the bore. cylinder, while the other opens into the combustion chamber Q practically cylindrical and having the same axis as the pocket N, chamber formed between the internal end of the pocket N, the circumferential wall of the non-cylindrical jacket 0 cooled and the plug P hot, so that when an air charge is forced through the helical passage P1, during the compression stroke,
this charge will enter the combustion chamber Q, in a direction such that at the end of the compression stroke all the charge in the combustion chamber will rotate around the axis of this chamber.
A fuel atomizer is placed in the end wall N 'of the pocket of the combustion chamber, at a point near the circumference of the combustion chamber Q, for example as indicated at Q' in FIG. 4.
This sprayer is intended to supply a single jet of fuel in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the cylindrical combustion chamber and towards the internal surface of the plug P, the arrangement of the sprayer and the shape of the jet of fuel being such that the fuel is not directed towards the open internal end of the helical passage, but all this fuel is directed towards a part of the internal surface of the plug, remote from the internal end of this passage.
In the third embodiment shown in FIG. 5, the construction is somewhat similar to that shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. However, in this embodiment, the cylinder head, designated by N \, internally has a cooled pocket N '', of generally cylindrical shape, the mouth of which is located partially on one side of the cylinder. cylinder bore, and partially overlaps this bore.
The pocket N 3 comprises a first cylindrical part, adjacent to the bore of the cylinder, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the diameter of a second cylindrical part N4, this part being short and adjacent to the closed upper end of the pocket, the cylindrical part of larger diameter being connected to the cylindrical part of smaller diameter by a short frustoconical intermediate part <B> N ', </B> as shown.
A thread is formed on the inside of part N <B> '</B> and engages a corresponding thread on the outside of the upper end part of an uncooled tubular R liner. The length of the sleeve is approximately equal to the length of the pocket N3 and the part of this sleeve lying below the threaded part is constructed so that its circumferential outer surface is near the corresponding part of the sleeve. the inner circumferential surface of the wall of the pocket N3, but at a small distance from this part, such that the contact between the tubular jacket R and the cooled wall surrounding it is limited to the threaded part.
The liner R is formed such that its inner circumferential surface has a smaller diameter cylindrical portion R 'located near the upper end of the liner and a frustoconical portion R = located midway through its liner. length and connecting the part R 'to a part .R3 of larger internal diameter, located at the lower end of the liner.
The body <B> 8 </B> similar to a plug, cooled lion, is mounted rigidly inside the lower end part of the liner formed by the parts R 'and Ry. The outer circumferential surface of this member is in contact with the inner circumferential surface of the liner.
A shallow cylindrical recess Sl is formed in the upper surface of the or gane 8, this recess being approximately the same diameter as the internal diameter of the part R1, so that this part R 'of the liner and the Sl insertion of the plug S together form a combustion chamber T of practically cylindrical shape having a length approximately equal to its diameter.
A groove S 'is formed in the circumferential part of the stopper S. This groove is of generally helical shape and it constitutes, with the parts R' and R3, a passage communicating at its lower end with the bore of the cylinder. L and, at its upper end, with the combustion chamber T and this passage is of such a shape that the charge of air forced through it, during the compression stroke, will enter the combustion chamber in such a manner that the charge in this chamber at the end of the compression stroke will revolve around the axis of this chamber.
A fuel atomizer U is mounted in the upper wall of the pocket N 2 # at a point remote from the axis of the combustion chamber T and disposed near its circumferential wall. This sprayer is intended to provide a jet of fuel in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the combustion chamber.
The n bolt Y, located in a tapped hole at the end of the pocket N ', enters a notch R' formed in the upper end of the liner R, so as to prevent the latter from turn.
In this embodiment, the end of the recessed member which opens into the cylinder is shown having its edge slightly displaced inwardly with respect to the circumference of the bore of the cylinder. However, in most cases, this edge is preferably located near or coincides with the circumference of the cylinder bore. In addition, the sprayer is shown, for convenience, slightly displaced circumferentially from the position it occupies in the preferred arrangement, in particular a corresponding position, with respect to the internal end of the recessed member, to that shown in fig. 4.
Although, in the embodiments described, only one sprayer is employed, two or more sprayers can in some cases be used, each sprayer being arranged in the manner specified or the average direction of the jets of the sprayers, considered as a whole, conforming to the speci fi ed requirements. In addition, the invention can be applied to two or four stroke engines and having intake and exhaust ports controlled by mushroom valves, one or more furnaces or other types of valves, or else, in the case of a two-stroke engine, lights located in the cylindrical wall and controlled by the piston.
In addition, the proportion of the total air charge which is forced into the combustion chamber may vary and may depend, to some extent, on the clearances required for mechanical reasons and for other considerations.
It will be noted that, in the embodiments shown, the combustion chamber, which is practically circular in cross section in planes perpendicular to its axis, has a minimum distance between its end walls which is equal to at least two-thirds of the average diameter of this combustion chamber. The injection device of these embodiments is arranged in such a way as to provide, in the combustion chamber, a jet of fuel practically parallel to the axis of said chamber.
In other embodiments, one could have one or more injection devices providing a jet whose mean direction forms, with a line parallel to the axis of the combustion chamber, an angle which is between 0 and 45, which moreover represent the limits between which this angle could vary.
In the embodiments shown, the fuel sprayer has a single orifice and is intended to produce a cone of fog.
It should be understood that the circumferential wall of the combustion chamber may have the shape of a barrel, a truncated cone, a bell or else this chamber may have an internal surface which is so much or not very convex in transverse sections along planes enclosing the axis, while the end walls of the combustion chamber can be either practically flat, or slightly concave or convex.
