Process and apparatus for cooling, storing and transporting spoiled goods by means of solid carbon dioxide. The present invention relates to a method for keeping and transporting refrigerated goods subject to spoilage, especially those goods where the protective effect of the carbonic acid gas can be applied at a certain concentration, but where too high a concentration has a destructive effect on the goods would result.
It is known that certain concentrations of carbonic acid in the storage or cooling atmosphere of certain perishable goods, such as fish or fruit, have a specific protective effect, while other concentrations can be harmful in some cases.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that at least part of the gas resulting from the evaporation of the solid carbonic acid is passed together with air through an injector to the cooling chamber. An apparatus suitable for executing the method according to the invention has an insulated chamber set up to accommodate the goods to be cooled, a container for solid carbon dioxide, an outlet leading from this container to an injector, an air supply line to the injector and an injector line connecting to the insulated chamber.
The drawing illustrates an exemplary embodiment of an apparatus suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention in vertical section.
The storage or cooling space 1 is surrounded by insulation 2 with the exception of the location of the printed circuit board 3. The circuit board 3 can extend over any desired area, depending on the circumstances in order, and are in direct contact with the coolant 4 or to a certain extent .thermisch be isolated from him. The coolant 4 is in a container 5 made of good insulating material, except for the bottom forming the circuit board 3, is closed.
A regulating member 14 provided with tube 6 of a relatively small bore leads in the container 4 developed, gaseous carbon acid to an opening 7 and to a venturi B in another, directly connected to the interior of the cooling chamber 1 tube 9 is arranged. The tube 6 forms together with the venturi tube 8 an injector. 10 is a line for the Luftein occurs, and the amount of incoming air, which is entrained like an injector by the carbon dioxide gas stream exiting from the opening 7, can be regulated by a regulating organ 11.
The end of the tube 6 leading the carbon dioxide to the opening 7 is designed like a nozzle, and excess carbon dioxide can be released into the open through a tube 12 branching off from the tube 6 with a regulating member 13. Through the regulating members 13 and 14, the amount of carbon dioxide to be admitted into the refrigerator compartment can thus be determined and excess carbon dioxide released. In cold rooms that are mainly gas-tight, a discharge duct 15 is required, which allows the carbonic acid gas / air mixture to escape before a pressure higher than 1 ata forms in the cold room.
For the preservation of fish, a suitable concentration of carbon dioxide at a temperature of 00 C is 50 to 55%, with the remainder being air.
An apparatus of the type drawn and described was used to carry out an experiment in which the composition of the carbonic acid-air mixture was determined from time to time. The results obtained here are shown in the table below
EMI0002.0023
<I> Time <SEP> after <SEP> start of <SEP> carbonic acid <SEP> in <SEP> 0% </I>
<tb> <I> in <SEP> hours <SEP> above <SEP> below </I>
<tb> 3.5 <SEP> 45 <SEP> 45
<tb> 6.2 <SEP> 51.5 <SEP> 52.5
<tb> 23.8 <SEP> 56.5 <SEP> 55.5
<tb> 46.2 <SEP> 54.5 <SEP> 55.5 The above test was carried out with the air inlet to the injector completely open, and another test was made,
to determine the change in the CO2 atmosphere when the air inlet to the injector is only half open.
The results achieved are shown in the table below
EMI0002.0029
<I> Time <SEP> after <SEP> <SEP> starts carbon dioxide <SEP> in </I> <SEP> 0/0
<tb> <I> in <SEP> hours <SEP> above <SEP> below </I>
<tb> 6 <SEP> 55,5 <SEP> 55
<tb> 23 <SEP> 69 <SEP> 69.5
<tb> 30 <SEP> 70 <SEP> 71
<tb> 40.5 <SEP> 71.5 <SEP> 7 <B> 1 </B>, 5 The total carbon dioxide variation is thus 16.5%, which justifies saying that the atmosphere was practically the same in both experiments was.
The method according to the present invention allows an independent control of the temperature of the cooled chamber and the carbonic acid content of their Atmo sphere, in that the temperature is dependent on the total amount of evaporated solid carbonic acid, whereas the ratio of air to the carbonic acid exiting the injector only is little dependent on the amount of carbonic acid that enters the injector within moderate limits.
