Es hat sich ergeben, daZ die beste praktische Ausführungsform eines solchen Behälters :diejenige ist, bei -der ein. äusserer Stahlkörper mit Blei ausgekleidet ist; dabei ist aber auch gefunden worden, .dass, wenn der Behälter von aussen her erhitzt wird, ein Teildes aus .der Lösung ausgefäll ten basischen Alauns die Neigung hat, an !der Auskleidung hängen zu bleiben, und zwar in Form einer fest anhaftenden Kruste, welche ,die Leitfähigkeit der Behälterwand beträch(;
- lich herabsetzt.
Während das Verfahren gemäss 4er Er findung so ausgeführt werden kann, :dass die zu behandelnde Lösung als einzelne Teil menge in den Behälter zugelassen und darin gehalten wird, wobei der Behälter ab wechselnd gefüllt und entleert wird, ist ge funden worden, dass es sehr vorteilhaft ist, das Verfahren mit einem Behälter auszu führen, dessen Länge mehrmals grösser als sein Durchmesser ist;

Process for the production of basic alum. The invention relates to the production of basic alum with the aid of a process known per se, in which an aqueous solution of normal alum is subjected to a temperature of over 140 C at a corresponding pressure in order to produce a basic alum, especially in a finely divided state, to form and precipitate, a solution of sulfuric acid and alkali or ammonium sulfate or both obtained, which have been freed from the normal alum.
Basic alum is to be understood as meaning a hydraulic compound of an alkali metal or ammonium sulfate or both and basic aluminum sulfate.
The process is advantageously carried out at a temperature of about 200 C; at temperatures below 140 ° C. it cannot practically be used to advantage. It is also known that if the treated solutions consist only of a solution of normal alum, only about 80% of the clay present in the normal alum is to be found in the precipitate consisting of basic alum, and that if the solution A . Alkali sulfate is added in an amount equal to the amount of alkali sulfate present in the normal alum,
a basic alum can be formed, which contains about 9815 of the clay present in the normal alum solution. As far as can be ascertained, the above-mentioned process has acquired no significance for the technical production of a basic alum, probably for the reason that no technical method was proposed for using the process in practice.
Because of the high pressure used in conjunction with the high temperature to which the solution is to be brought, it is of course necessary that the container in which the alum solution is treated can withstand such pressures, and because of the presence of the Sulfuric acid, which is liberated in the process and is contained in the mother liquor from which the basic alum is precipitated, it is necessary that the container is of such a type that it is
the acid is not attacked. In practice, this would mean that a steel container is used which is lined with a material that does not react with the i-acid in the solution.
It has been found that the best practical embodiment of such a container is that with which one. outer steel body is lined with lead; But it has also been found that when the container is heated from the outside, part of the basic alum precipitated from the solution has a tendency to stick to the lining, in the form of a firmly adhering crust, which is the conductivity of the container wall (;
- very low. This allows the temperature to be increased to such an extent that the melting point is even reached. The conductivity of the assembled container is low even under normal conditions and would be much lower due to the additional resistance caused by the settled crust; Under these circumstances, of course, the correct heating of the solution is impaired and, in addition, an increase in the temperature of the steel outer part of the container is brought about, which can be dangerous.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a method in which the alum solution is quickly heated to the temperature required for rapid and effective precipitation of the basic alum and the heating of the solution is regulated in such a way that the precipitation of the basic alum. takes place with a ge desired particle size.
The heating of the alum solution takes place in an uninterrupted process by which the basic alum is precipitated from the solution while it passes through the container in an uninterrupted stream is quickly brought to a temperature above 140 ° C,
that in the solution located in the container high pressure water vapor is introduced in an amount sufficient to bring about such a rapid increase in temperature. It has been found that, under these circumstances, it is possible to raise the temperature of the solution to the necessary or desired value, with the result that the basic alum will adhere to the walls of the container without damaging it show, is precipitated from the solution, although in the heating of the solution according to the invention, which is brought about by the introduction of steam under high pressure, an adhering crust of small thickness would not be harmful.
Such a crust could even be of a certain advantage in that it would reduce the value of the heat conduction through the container walls and by regulating the heating of the solution with the aid of regulated steam it is possible to increase the size of the particles within certain limits dominate. Generally speaking, the size of the particles of the precipitate will be greater, the more gradually the temperature of the solution is increased, while with faster heating it is possible and practical to produce the basic alum in the form of an extremely fine precipitate.
While the method according to the invention can be carried out in such a way: that the solution to be treated is admitted into the container as a single partial amount and held therein, the container being alternately filled and emptied, has been found to be very advantageous is to perform the process with a container whose length is several times greater than its diameter;
The alum solution is introduced into the container at one end and is heated to the desired level as it passes through the container, while the mother liquor produced, which lowers the basic alum, is in suspension contains, is removed from the other end of the container.
If the method according to the invention is carried out in this way, then it is very desirable and important that the steam is supplied so that it comes into contact with the flowing solution at different points along the container. Preferably, two or more steam inlets are provided which open into the solution stream at different points along its length. It is preferable to first introduce the steam at some distance from the uppermost part of the liquid flow, so that the part of the flow which is in front of the steam inlet is gradually heated with the formation of small crystals of basic alum.
The size of these small crystals grows as the heat of the 'current' increases as it approaches the steam inlet and as it flows past it. If small particles are desired, it is advisable that the vapor be allowed closer to the top of the flowing stream so that more crystals of smaller size are formed.
The use of a plurality of steam inlets arranged in interstices is important, because the basic alum is formed by an en.do-thermal reaction and: the necessary high temperature is quickly reached in the entire flowing mass of the solution in the manner described is kept at its value.
When working with the uninterrupted process described as advantageous, it has been found that when the line container through which the solution flows is completely filled with the solution, stagnations in the continuity of the solution flow can occur which can become so tight have their cause in the formation of large vapor bubbles, which do not condense.
This difficulty has been overcome by maintaining a mass of inert gas, preferably air, in the upper part of the conduit container, namely above the level of the column - of the enclosed solution, the presence of which effectively prevents blockages prevents which, as already mentioned, can occur if such a gas mass is not present in .dem container.
In the drawing, a particularly effective same embodiment of a device for performing the method is shown as an example.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the center of the container, namely in a plane in which the pipes admitting the steam lie.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section along line 2 # 2 of Fig. 1.
A denotes the outer shell of the container or autoclave, which is preferably made of .steel and has a sufficient strength to withstand the pressure .from it is set.
A 'is the upper and AZ the lower lid of the autoclave. B denotes a lining made of non-reactive metal, preferably lead, and C an inner lining made of non-reactive, inert and refractory material, such as acid-proof bricks. <B> D </B> means the inlet pipe through which the alum solution is pressed uninterruptedly into the container, under a pressure of something. . is greater than the pressure prevailing in the autoclave.
D 'denotes a pump by which the solution is pressed into the container, and Dz a valve for regulating the flow of the solution after the container. E is an outlet line that goes from the bottom of the autoclave, and F is a valve for regulating the opening through which the liquid is discharged from the line container.
G denotes a container in which the solution and the precipitate formed from it flows in from the outlet opening of the autoclave and from which steam can escape under preferably regulated conditions in order to bring about a rapid reduction in the temperature of the solution.
H is a steam heater that is connected to a steam generator; the pressure of the steam generated is greater than the pressure prevailing in the autoclave. H1, H2, H3, H4 denote branch pipes which branch off from the heater H and are preferably bent into rings HL in the interior of the pipe container. These rings have downwardly extending openings, which are preferably provided with short tubes H.
Each of the tubes H1, H2, H3, H4 is equipped with a control valve J, while a pressure control valve K is provided in the line leading to the heater. L denotes a valve at the bottom of the heater, which is provided to drain the water condensed in the heater. M is a compressor from which a pipe 1111 leads into the upper part of the line container which is equipped with a valve M2.
N is the column of liquid maintained in the container and 0 is the mass of inert. Gas, preferably air: which is maintained in the top of the container. The line container shown has a height of about 6 m and an internal diameter of about 120 cm.
When the device is started up, both the outlet valve F and the steam supply line are closed. The line container is then filled with liquid, preferably water, up to about the inlet line D for the solution. Air is then forced into the top of the container until the pressure reaches a value of 11.3 to 12.7 kg / om2 (160 to 180 pounds).
Steam is then admitted through the tubes H ', H2, H3, H4 until the temperature of the liquid enclosed in the container is up to 170 ° C. at its' upper level'.
Thereupon the outlet valve F and the solution: inlet valve D =

<B> ..often. </B> <SEP>, <SEP> <B> i </B> <SEP>,. <SEP> <B> n <SEP> i <SEP> n..nn </B> the same measure as the inflow of the solution pressed into the container, increased by the amount of water that condenses out of the steam which is used for heating the solution as it passes through the conduit container.
The steam supply is regulated in such a way that the solution flowing through the pipe container is brought to the desired temperature and is kept at this temperature. In this case, this temperature must exceed 140 ° C for all practical cases, and it has been found that, in order to achieve the best: results, the temperature must be kept at around 185 ° C to 200 ° C.
When working with the last-mentioned temperature values, the speed of the liquid flow through the line container should be such that the solution and its products are held in the container for a period of 5 to 10 minutes.
At these temperatures, a finely divided basic galium alum precipitate is precipitated from a solution of normal potassium alum, which contains almost 80 to 85 per cent of the clay present in normal alum and about 28 of the potassium sulfate present in normal alum, while the sulfuric acid component contains basic alum about 38% of those of.
normal alum amounts. The mother liquor contains sulfuric acid and potassium sulfate in solution, along with the normal remaining. Alum introduced during the reaction.
It should be understood that a higher yield of basic alum and almost complete expulsion of the alumina content of normal alum can be obtained by adding potassium sulfate to the solution in an amount equal to that present in normal alum Amount of potassium sulfate is equivalent.
The method according to the invention can of course in any conduit container
EMI0004.0088
Advantages can be obtained with a discontinuous treatment of a normal solution of a normal alum in order to precipitate a basic alum from the solution, the heat being taken from steam under high pressure. which is introduced into the solution in a pressure-resistant container.
It should also be noted that in the continuous mode of operation, the introduction of steam into the solution flowing through the line container at different heights or at different points on the way of the solution is highly advantageous, as this contributes to the necessary endothermic Allow the heat of reaction to exist along the entire length of the container.
It has been found that in practice it is advantageous to keep the heat of the upper part of the liquid mass at about 130.degree. C. and to regulate the steam supply so that a temperature of about 198.degree. C. at a point which is about 60 cm is below the level of the liquid mass, is obtained. Under these conditions the precipitate has such a particle size that 99% of the precipitate passes through a 300-mesh sieve. Faster heating of the solution results in smaller particle size in the precipitate, while gradual heating results in the formation of larger particles in the precipitate.
What has been said with regard to particle size and temperatures applies in particular to the treatment of potassium and sodium alum. In the case of ammonium alum, the particles will be larger under the same conditions.
It should be noted that the method is dependent on harnessing the latent heat of the high pressure steam used to heat the alum solution and that at a measured pressure. of 14 kg / em2 (200 pounds) is the amount of steam required to precipitate 454 grams (1 pound) of alumina from an 80-pound alum solution at an initial temperature of <B> 100 ° C will be 1.9 kg (4.2 pounds).
