Process for compressing, during manufacture, the wall of a pipe or other hollow cylinder, and device for carrying out said process. The present invention relates to a method for. compression, during manufacture, of the wall of a pipe or other hollow cylinder composed, for example, of ordinary cement mortar or fibrous concrete (cement mixed with asbestos or other suitable fibrous material), pro yielded in which the turns of a cable without the tension by means of a weight are rolled around the hollow cylinder still in the plastic state,
said turns moving from one end to the other of said cylinder by virtue of the rotation which is imparted to the latter.
The present invention also relates to a device for the implementation (the above process, comprising an axis capable of being rotated and on which is fixed the pipe provided with its mold; an endless cable to which is suspended a variable weight, so as to vary the tension of the cable being wound over a part of the length of the aforementioned pipe: means being provided for changing the direction of rotation of said pipe, to change the direction of displacement cable.
By this process, which can be implemented with very simple devices, the large installations required with known processes of the same type as those in use for the manufacture of paper or cardboard are avoided. The pipes obtained according to the known methods owe their resistance to elements which cannot be calculated and for this. their resistance is inconstant and they can only be used for low pressures.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, a schematic embodiment of a (lispositif for the implementation of the method according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view thereof; La, fi-. 9- is an elevational view of the cable at the end of its travel, and FIG. 3 is a sectional view.
In the device shown, the mortar is modeled on a cylindrical mold 1: on said mortar are wound the turns of the endless and flexible cable 2; the number of turns, as well as the diameter of the rope being in relation to the diameter of the pipe. The rope 2 passes through the groove of a pulley 3, the diameter of which is a little less than the length of the pipe covered by the turns, so that, when winding, said turns remain contiguous. Suspended from the pulley pivot is a receptacle 4 which can be weighted at will, so as to give the rope the desired tension. Said ballast may be water, mercury, grains of lead, etc. The whole being in place, or gives the pipe a rotational movement.
It goes without saying that before being subjected to compression, the pipe may be wrapped with a strip of canvas or other material on which the turns of the cable are wound.
If the rotation of the mold and the pipe takes place in a direction such that, for example, the 2 "end of the rope unwinds, and the 2 'end rolls up, the whole group of turns will move from the left to the the right and will compress the material of the pipe. If, now, the winding having reached the end of the stroke, the direction of rotation of the pipe is reversed so that the 2 'end of the rope is unwinds, end 2 "will roll up and the whole group of turns will move from right to left.
An automatic mechanism can be placed at the end of their travel, making it possible to reverse the direction of rotation of the mold supporting the pipe; likewise, at one end of the pipe, a pulley 5 having a diameter corresponding to that of said pipe can be placed; the whole group of turns will be wound around this pulley when it is desired to suspend the compression operation. which will free up the finished pipe.
By means of the device shown, the compression can be carried out at a high speed.
The weight of the ballast determines the tension of the rope, and thus. the value of the pressure can vary at will: this variation can also take place automatically, by coupling to the reverser a mechanism capable of pouring a given quantity of ballast into the receptacle 4. By this medium, the compression can be graded and varied to. will; it can be made to pass from a minimum value to a maximum value, the mortar acquiring a greater consistency as the water is expelled without any harmful rolling effects occurring.
If even, because of the lack of gradation of the com pression due to an irregular increase, of the weight which tightens the rope, there were a slight deformation of the pipe, this deformation would be immediately corrected during the next step and reverse of the group of turns.
If desired, the pipe can be formed from a series of successive layers, and each layer can then be compressed in turn.
For this purpose, it will suffice, when the compression of a layer is complete, that the. turns of the rope are brought on the idler pulley 5 and put back into operation immediately after the formation of a new layer.
In the event that the pipe must be reinforced, after having put the reinforcement in place, the protective layer of this reinforcement will be formed: and if this layer consists of a fibrous material, it will be applied and compressed as well. that it was described for the manufacture of the pipe.
It should be noted that this compression method acts equally on the mortar covering the bars of the reinforcement and on the mortar existing between said bars, because the. compression causes the mortar to penetrate between the voids existing between said irons.
Thanks to the rapidity with which the manufacture of pipes according to the method described takes place, an intimate union between the various layers is obtained, the reinforcement therefore being able to be considered as actually incorporated in the wall of the pipe.
The concrete plastic layer can also be applied to a pipe of metal or other non-plastic material so that after compression, said layer forms a part with the material of the pipe and provides effective protection against oxidation and other harmful effects of water and terrain.
